  1. Agreed. I think the houses Margie refers to were all 1930's construction. I remember the field at the end of Fairview. There was a considerable drop at the end of that field onto Breckhill. Also Arno Vale School is not shown (our alma mater!) that was a thirties building. Arno Vale Rd. which continued onto Somersby, is not there.
  2. My father used to have an allotment post war on Somersby Rd. It was in the field opposite Littlegreen Rd. There was a grassy hill in the next field up and that was popular for flying model aeroplanes in the 50’s.
  3. I actually know a chap who used to repair CR tubes. It was a big business at the time and he had clients like British Rail, airports and other large companies that used tv to display announcements. He was able to regun the tubes, create a vacuum and reseal. I still see him regularly. No call for his services now though.
  4. Well he had expressed concern about what all the wins were costing him in bonuses and was saying he might have to sell. As things are now who would be queuing up to buy it?
  5. I made some a few years ago when we had a greenhouse with grapes. It was a disaster. It was christened Shat Oh Mayfield!
  6. Get a Mac. You know you really want one.
  7. I remember the pillbox, also the fires. I was there when they were started but it wasn't me that struck the match. The one who did is now a pillar of the community!
  8. That's the most unconvincing Father Christmas I've ever seen. Guaranteed to frighten little children! Just noticed - it's the same bloke as Maggie's!
  9. We took our three year old son to see the Co-Op Santa which he enjoyed and then, rather foolishly in hindsight, took him to the Debenhams Santa. As he sat on his knee he said “Your not as good as the Co-Op Santa!”
  10. I could never enjoy Colwick Cheese. It tasted just like milk which had gone “of”. Which in fact was exactly what it was!
  11. Those buildings were owned, pre war, by my uncle’s father, Elijah Burton who was property developer and a coal merchant. I know no more than that and there’s nobody around still alive to ask.
  12. Employers can’t deduct from wages unless required by law, eg PAYE and NI, or it is specifically mentioned in the contract of employment. If it’s ‘policy’ it has to be a specific term in the employee’s contract. Looks like an attempt at sharp practice to me.
  13. Very rare. Just cut the horns and the hooves off!
  14. I really like a blue steak if properly prepared. The best I ever had was in a restaurant near to Les Abatoirs in Paris but that was many years ago. I wouldn’t dare to ask for one in Nottingham.
  15. Can’t see what the fuss is about sprouts. We had them twice last week. Cooked al dente of course!
  16. Since the advent of nouvelle cuisine and celebrity chefs we've a cultivated a breed of pretentious foodies. I think a lot of it is just like the "Emperors New Clothes". At one time you used to go out to a decent restaurant and have a quality meal - preferably something which would be more elaborate than you would cook at home without all the faff that went with that. Now we've got 10 course "tasting menus". Can you really satisfy a hearty appetite with microscopic portions of God knows what on the plate? I used to eat out a lot, especially when I was in business. I was usually the customer so
  17. I’ve been in Stein’s fish and chip shops in Falmouth and Padstow. Better than most chips shops but not exactly fine dining!
  18. I did know a Susie Fletcher who came from around that way in 1962/63. She was a comptometer operator at the accountants Hubbart Durose and Pain on Park Row. A bit of a ‘lively’ sort of girl. She married Robert Bastow who lived in the same area. He went to work at Gascoines estate agents as a trainee but sadly he died at a very young age. They did live somewhere off Westdale Lane. She will no doubt have remarried. She was a pretty game girl!
  19. Too right. It generally comes from Brakes and is heated up in the microwave. I once took a sneaky peek into the kitchen of a fine dining restaurant and saw rows of microwaves. How else can they bring the stuff to the table so quickly? As in all things you’ve got to see through the con.
  20. A compulsory fifteen quid whether you like it or not and I would be determined not to like it just for the pleasure of the hassle with the head waiter!
  21. I though we might give Sat Bains a try purely out of curiosity, although now he has elevated status you might have to put your name down at birth. The testing menu looks a bit vague and not especially tempting but the crowning statement at the bottom - 'a 12.5% discretionary gratuity will be added to your bill' was a bit cheeky and a misuse of language. So sorry Mr. Bains - you can stick your tasting menu at £120 up somewhere you can't taste it! It looks like a bowl of chips in the old Sherwood bus depot will be the height of my gourmet experience!
  22. I though it might be the dreadful Windows 10 but it happens on the infallible MAC as well!
