  1. Nothing better than a Big Mac when you’re really hungry. They’re rubbish really but on the rare occasions when the urge comes over you and you see the golden arch you’ve just got to have one.
  2. It was off Buckingham Rd. On the left as you came up from Thackeray’s Lane. There was also a bit of unmade road on the rhs.
  3. The sports field was the Girls’ High School games field . From the bottom of our garden on Park Rd. You could watch the girls playing hockey. Not that I did of course!
  4. I lived in Woodthorpe from 1943 and our first house was quite close to the suburban railway. It was just through a builders yard on Grafton Avenue and up the high railway bank. This was when the tracks were still there. I knew that line like the back of my hand from Daybrook to Sherwood Station and I’ve even walked through the tunnel under Woodborough Rd. I can only ever remember one goods train on the line carrying what appeared to be bombs! I remember the magnificent blue brick bridge over Thackeray’s Lane and a lattice steel bridge over Marlborough Rd. To put pennies on the line we used to
  5. You went to the "Good Shepherd" then. I used to live right behind there until 1962.
  6. The older I get the more socialist my conscience becomes but if I give my "riches" to the poor then I'll be poor so it becomes self defeating!
  7. Home Brewery Luncheon Ale. I’d forgotten about that. What a wonderful taste of the 60’s!
  8. I’m surprised you could read the email sitting in the dark!
  9. We need a bit of excitement to brighten up the dull winter days. Not complete devastation of course - just a mild tremor.
  10. Not here to my knowledge. I think it was more down the western side of the country. The last time we felt a quake here was was in Feb 2008, centered in Market Rasen which was the biggest for 25 years.
  11. I’m by no means a “leftie” but I always thought it was wrong to denationalise essential services. Maybe this is going into the realms of politics and that’s not allowed!
  12. I know it's silly really but Sunday isn't Sunday for me without a full works English breakfast on the morning and a roast dinner and a glass or two of wine in the evening! We don't bother with lunch!
  13. I’ve always given my wife the outside cut of the beef for years as a special favour. Last week she complained that she always got the bloody outside bit. You just can’t win!
  14. What no Waitrose in Mansfield. Where does one shop?
  15. I can do any accent you choose. Stanley Holloway wasn’t a Lancastrian he was a Londoner so he was just putting it on.
  16. Strangely enough I know that monologue verbatim - God knows how or why!
  17. Ah yes, I see it is now. Sorry about the use of the word “cock” - It won’t happen again!
  18. Didn’t that used to be the “Cock and Pheasant” pub?
  19. The DS was the only one I drove quite a lot. That was a very technologically advanced car back in its day.
  20. There is a good twisty and quiet stretch of the old A1 from Sutton on Trent up to Tuxford which is a great driving road for the keener motorist!
  21. Interesting Rog. I remember the A1 when locally it passed through the centres of Bawtry, Retford, Tuxford, Newark, Grantham and Stamford. There was far less traffic then of course but you could see the holdups gradually getting worse. At Newark the traffic sometimes stretched back as far as Kelham Bridge on a bank holiday. Things have now gone full circle and the A617 is once again experiencing long tailbacks. Traffic in Newark this afternoon was horrendous. From Monday a temporary one way system is in force on Castlegate until June for sewer works. The holdups are going to be mega, even by Ne
  22. Farmers round here are not conservationists. A field to them is just an outdoor factory to be intensively cultivated. I suppose they’ve got to make a living. I’m pleased we’ve got a few acres of our own with trees, ancient hedges and lots of wildlife. When we’ve gone it will probably become equestrian - and what do they do with their horses - ride them along the lanes slowly and clog them up for people like me who want to get a move on. Mr. Grumpy. Yes that’s me.
  23. For those of us to like to go the extra mile!
