  1. Welcome to Nottstalgia, Yerfd0g. Hope you'll have lots more memories to share with us
  2. If you only have a connection, with no phone connected, do you still have to pay for phone rental?
  3. Chulla, reading your post about eating mussels in a sauce reminded me of one of my favourite things - mushrooms done in the same way with flour, milk and butter to make a sauce. I first had them in a cafe in Mansfield when I was about 18 and they were served on toast. We nurses used to go there when we had an afternoon off to treat ourselves.
  4. I've never eaten mussels - they look a bit chewy...
  5. “The Moving Finger writes; and, having writ, Moves on: nor all your Piety nor Wit Shall lure it back to cancel half a Line, Nor all your Tears wash out a Word of it.” ― Omar Khayyám, The Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám: Fitzgerald's Translation with Notes That's the only quote I knew from his writings, but have just read some more on the web - interesting....
  6. Paul didn't have any symptoms - he just got a letter inviting him for a free screening. His aorta was only 1.5cm diameter so that's good.
  7. Paul went for a scan yesterday to check for aortic aneurism. It was a new scheme to monitor, if necessary, anyone whose aorta had a diameter of more than 3 cm. He was fine so doesn't need to be seen regularly. The scheme is only for men, so who knows what mine is!
  8. Benjamin, I'd be interested to know in what circumstances you feel the need to do handstands..... Bubblewrap, it's Aspartame which sweetens it, not sugar, but I don't think that's very good either!!
  9. Yes, sorry, CarolM, where are my manners! Welcome to Nottstalgia - hope you'll keep posting....
  10. I started smoking and drinking when I started my Nursing training because all the others seemed to do it. Before that I'd never even tried any alcohol and was particularly against smoking. I remember when I was 17 nagging a boyfriend to stop smoking. So from 18 years old I think I drank too much even though I never liked the taste, and gradually got to depend on cigarettes. I didn't stop smoking till I was in my mid thirties - found it difficult to stop - but after I was married at 23 I very rarely drank alcohol (cos as I said before, I never really liked the taste anyway). Then when I wa
  11. I went on HRT in the eighties when it was a relatively new treatment but took myself off it after 10 years or so. Been fine since then
  12. When I had to put my choices for a secondary school, I put Carlton-le-Willows first and Brincliffe second - can't remember the third one. We all wanted to go to CLW as it was a new school. When we started in 1954, it was still being built - we could only use one half of it but it was lovely. We kept being told that we were the ones who would make the traditions for the school. We only had one year above us and they had been shipped in from West Bridgeford and Henry Mellish. We had kids coming from a long way away - one girl lived near Newstead Abbey and some of my other classmates came fr
  13. I remember the old lamps on Woodthorpe Drive being replaced with ones with an orange glare. I used to be fascinated that the colour of my coat, scarf and gloves was different under these lights. This was about 1954 I think
  14. I'm sure there are lots of people you have worked with who remember you with affection, FLY. Who knows.... you might have had a life-changing effect on some of their lives. NO-ONE's life is ever a waste. I'm pleased you've enjoyed most of your jobs - that's worth a lot.
  15. Cadet Nurse, Student Nurse, Staff Nurse, 3 children in 3 and a half years ..... (No time to think about paid work in-between each child) voluntary work teaching English to illiterate adults in Leicester, then back to paid work when the youngest child was 8 - this time not nursing, but working in a secondary school with hearing impaired students. I was based in a special unit there but also used to accompany students to mainstream lessons. I stayed in this job for nearly 30 years, working with over 60 students during my time there. I was also the main carer for my elderly Mum, who lived with
  16. Sorry that you both had a bit of a scare this morning, Michael, but pleased that the problem was soon sorted. Look after yourselves...
  17. Did your card have a picture of Nottingham on? Ours had Ely Cathedral. Perhaps they think they'll get more takers if it looks regional?
  18. # 2. We had one of them last week. Our place wasn't here at that time so I threw the card away
  19. I remember on my 10th birthday, 2 of my friends and I did a little play we found in 'Enid Blyton's Book of the Year' for the rest of the children who were at my party. We had a bay window which had curtains across it for the stage. That was one of my favourite books as a child. It had a story, a poem, a play and some facts for each month. Did anyone else read this book - I think it was probably read more by girls, but you never know!! I still have it somewhere I think.
  20. Welcome to Nottstalgia, Deepdene Boy. Hope you'll enjoy it!
