  1. Commo I too was at Huntingdon st about 53/54 .we lived right opposite the school. Before that I was at Shelton st school.
  2. My mum is now 93 going on 20. She still won't go out without makeup and buys new clothes almost every week. She has beautiful skin and doesn't look her age, until she starts to walk. When my daughter was small my parents took her on holiday with them. My daughter looked intently at my mum and said "why don't you use some polyfiller for those cracks on your face". Trust children to tell the truth.
  3. I can't add any more to what has been said before. This time of the year is critical in the south of France and along the coast line into Italy. We get it every year from now until Christmas. The problem is that it's so hot and dry during the summer, then it rains ...no it comes down in bucket loads and sometimes doesn't stop for days. The ground can't absorb the water quick enough. Last year Genoa was under water a few years ago the Cinque Terre, which is the most beautiful area, was all but washed away. The drains aren't very big either so adds to the disasters. Sad because so many people lo
  4. Yes it's me .i have replied
  5. I love all sorts of music from rock to skiffle to classical to country. Now I listen to Italian songs and some are fantastic but you never forget your youth and the emotions it brings when you think of your favourite group or singer.
  6. I've made marrow rum but out of a giant courgette returned from holiday and found this giant. Someone suggested marrow rum. It was good but never again. We couldn't keep up with the wasps. My dad was a big wine maker but he never ever drank it! The only thing I make is Limoncello and cream Limoncello.
  7. My married surname is Italian and it means basket maker. Here in Italy women keep their maiden names.
  8. Remember the words of Hondas' chairman...."Bly Blitish!" My mum worked at Meridian. She worked on nightdress inserts taking the paper backing off between the embroidery amongst other things. That was what I remember cos she used to sometimes bring them home and me and my brother used to help. Nothing to do with the forum but for a long time now at the markets we see goods sold at ? Eulo (euro) progress....I'm not so sure they are taking over everywhere.
  9. Thankyou Ian and Margie. Bravery doesn't come into it. I'm not a brave person, at first I was very frightened then I saw how frightened and worried my family was. I thought they are not me, I know how I feel they don't. If I don't start feeling positive how the heck can they. I started to think maybe I should ignore it...but it's there you've still got it, it's got to be treated. Oh well let's get on with it after the operation it'll be gone. It unfortunately didn't go like that and after the second op I really thought this is it. My oncologist is wonderful he helped me to be more positive.
  10. I posted before but it's gone awol. Yes Margie I had all my ops in Italy. The oncology dept in Asti is considered to be one of the best so I consider myself lucky to be looked after in this area.
  11. We haven't had frost yet in Italy. The weather is crazy, a few weeks ago we were still wearing tee shirts and shorts then as always the end of August beginning of September it rains and turns cold. It gradually gets a bit warmer during the day , not enough to wear a jacket though, then at night it gets very damp and cold. Now the last few days we've had some severe storms. The Costa azzura. and Liguria have been lashed by tornados and very heavy rain. Streets have at least 2 metres of water. It's autumn again. We have 40 degrees in the summer which is unbearable and never ending then as soon
  12. I've relived my situation along with all your wonderful quotes. I've laughed and I've cried at the comments. I too have gone through cancer. In 2009 I did a simple test ( that I insisted I didn't want to do but my husband insisted I do it) and it came back positive. I had a laporoscopy on my colon and was measured for a stoma which fortunately didn't have to have. I had to have a course of chemo and radiotherapy . I should have had 2x4 chemo but the last of the first session I couldn't do because it was too near to radio as I'd had to miss 2 sessions of chemo due to headache and low cells so
  13. I've heard..." Had a fantastic night last night" " oh yes what did you do" " can't remember" what's the point
  14. It was cozy but a bit outdated now. We had customers who knew my husband from when he worked at Trattoria Conte. They followed him in all the restaurants we had over the years. Many of whom we are still in touch with. We still hear from Mr Conte who came back here to retire. Yes Italian food is good, you never get tired of it there are so many regions all with different specialities. We are in Piedmont where the food and wines are excellent although there are a few thinks I won't eat !!
  15. OOOOH that was exciting Whats for pud
  16. This is "Love actually" Sushi and Misty enjoying a swing this summer.
  17. Up the steps note the fireplace and safe on RH side. All decoratd in broken glass
  18. Looking out towards Natwest
  19. Sorry neither of them. It certainly wasn't an "exotic" name. The land lady if I remember was called Mrs. Thorpe . She left an impression on me in some way. Apparently she had a tumour in her mouth. She made a trip to Lourdes and brought a bottle of holy water back with her. What she did with it I don't know but remember that the tumour disappeared. Wish mine had disappeared as quickly instead of 4 ops ,chemo and radio. Still, I think it depends on your positivity.
  20. I found 2 pics of the interior but not one from the outside. I will scan them and post. The Thurland was on the corner then the carpet shop a long corridor and then La Buca. It had a large glass frontage with the door if I remember correctly diagonally across the corner. Just a minute I'll look at pics. Yes it was across corner. We had red and white check curtains matched to tablecloths. The top part of the window was blacked out in an arch with ristorante e caffe La Buca written just below. When we bought it it was very dingy and unfortunately the owners were going bankrupt which was a shame
  21. I worked there from 1957 until 68-69. There was a pub down the road but I can't recall the name.
  22. What a small world and lovely to see the interior now. Thurland st '1977/78 used to be called La Buca Italian restaurant. My husband bought it from the old Dutch cafe. With very little money he threw everything out including the dirt and grime and simply made it into his first restaurant. Behind what was the bar he found a big hole that he almost put his foot through and consequently called the restaurant "la Buca" (the hole) inside after the steps on the left hand side was an old safe which a friend of his decorated with bits of broken glass. Wonder what happened to it. On the walls instead
  23. Hearing all these names around Hyson Green brought back into mind when I worked there but I think it was New basford. I was a hairdresser and served my apprenticeship and beyond at Godfreys on Noel street right opposite Noel st baths. It was on the corner, all the windows were leaded lights. Maybe there are a few mums wives or sisters out there that will remember. Along the road was a dry cleaners called Burkes. In between used to be a wash house or launderette.
  24. FINALLY GOT IT RIGHT. This is Misty cross pinscher, on holiday I was enjoying my liquorice icecream when my grandchildren starting laughing and pointed out Misty was at the other end enjoying it too.
