  1. Nice post, Ashley. Looking at ROT on Google now and remembering the wide open spaces around the village back in my days reminds you of a cancer spreading across the country side. There are now three houses on the block we lived at in Cliff Drive and the farm next door is now deemed an Estate. Same thing is happening out here. Where once there used to be farmlands between the main metro suburbs and the outer reaches, there are now housing estates or industrial areas as far as the eye can see. Some estates are so compact that the houses have no garages or car ports at the side of the houses an
  2. Stu, that's the curve I was thinking of at Firsby. Ashley, the only other curve I can think of that fits the bill is just coming into Boston where there is a sharp left-hander (the line from Grantham used to join the main line from Peterborough to Grimsby at this point). As for excursion at Suburban Junction - I guess it would be coming from Derby Friargate, or possibly down the GNR's Leen Valley branch - though I think trains to the coast from that way tended to go north through Mansfield Central, then Edwinstowe and Lincoln. But in them days excursions sometimes went by strange routes to a
  3. Ashley (post #101) - I wonder if it was going to Skeggy where you noticed that very sharp curve, which would likely have been the south link onto the Skegness branch just south of Firsby. In the 1950s MOST trains to Skeggy (and Mablethorpe) went from Victoria - but it was possible to go from Midland (usually excursion trains that had started elsewhere than Nottingham. I seem to remember reading that it was a bit of a performance, because they had to reverse over a link into London Road Low Level before heading off towards Netherfield etc. Trains to Skeg and Mabo went the same way - Grantham av
  4. Ashley, when my mum died it was a late March, funeral was April 1. Not a particularly warm time of year. I was staying at my brother's house, and a butterfly came to the window and fluttered outside there for ages, kept hitting into the window. It looked so out of place with the weather, I was sure it was my mother taking one last look at me [i'd come over from the States for the funeral]
  5. Ashley, as Fynger says: 'Y'aint daft mate'. I will have to look this up but I do know that there is a Connection between the moth and the soul; consider yourself fortunate.
  6. Don't spend it all at once Ashley !
  7. Found this nice pic of the "Book in Hand" Ashley:
  8. ASHLEY, good to see you posting and such lively and interesting writing - especially when having creative fun with the sand. Thanks for sharing your wonderful, well written memories. PS: so well written, I have to keep reading - of course I've given you a tick.
  9. Nice one Ashley! Brought back memories of rainy days at Mabo(was there ever a sunshine?)and down at the arcades. That tail gunner was played many times and was great fun. Also remember a vertical coin machine with a glass front and you used to flip a lever and send a coin around a spiral. Get the flick right and land in the right spot on the spiral and you used to get various amounts of pennies as prizes. The centre point paid the most. Great days!
  10. Have a Super, Great, Wonderful time Babs, Ashley et al - Sun's shining already.
