  1. Can anybody fill me in on what's happened to all the pubs on Radford Road from Bentinck Road all the way along. I lived on Hyson Green for a while and can remember I used to go into one of the pubs for a drink and they would serve you a thick hot pork cob with sage and onion stuffing. It went down a treat with your drink!
  2. Your dads name doesn’t ring any bells beefy but saying that there were loads of people who at that time worked for the company at Radford me for one. As a young lad and a dogs body for the despatch department I could find myself one day working in all four factories on the Radford complex. Many a time I would start work in number one factory and within an hour or so would be told to go to so and so factory because someone hasn’t turned in for work, I would get there and the foreman would say we don’t need you now but number so and so does and off I would trot. I have worked in number four fa
  3. Bump My dad worked at Players on Radford Boulevard all his working life Number 4 factory rings a bell. He started there in 1944 and took early retirement when it closed in 84 he was 54 then, they included his two years national service in to give him 40 years service and he recieved a lump sum and a pension (which my mum still receives now .My dad died in 1990 aged just 60 His name is(was) George Sheppard.
  4. the little white chap is our lucky pixie from Cornwell. cheers for doing thats radford x
  5. Ayup Radford. Beecrofts I believe are now based at Scarle not far from Swinderby but it's mainly internet and postal shopping they deal with now Rog
  6. Reminds me of the smell of new velour upholtery in the Cinemas. Unlike the smell of the Seating at Leno's Radford Road!
  7. It would be 1963 when I began working for Messer’s John Player and son and at that time I caught the bus from Trowel road getting off on Ilkeston road to walk the mile or so along Radford boulevard to the John player Factory complex. Walking up Beckinham road passing by the cellars where the pipe Tobacco was pressed into carrots ready for cutting into flakes the smell of Honey, Jam and whiskey emanating from the ventilating system up there to this day I have never forgotten. Also I recall while working there the leaf department where rows a pone rows of women of all ages took the woody stem
  8. Kath, Gerrard's factory wasn't near Basford Crossing... It was sited by the railway bridge on Wilkinson Street, which runs from Western Boulevard [just beyond the Nuthall Road junction] to Radford Road [near Shippo's brewery]. Well visible - and possibly just sniffable - from a 22 heading into the City between Whitemoor and Bobbers Mill. Surprised you can't recall the Barton 32, as it ran for many years...must have been as late as the early 60's, as I used the service when travelling to Saturday work at Cator Lane as a 16/17 year old. Certainly had the most circuitous route to the City,
  9. I worked at Raleigh and well remember the smell of oil. Also I used to walk past Players factory on Radford Blvd, coming to and from Raleigh to catch my bus. I remember the smell of Players too, a warm tobacco smell. One of the nicest smells from my teen years, was going into Burtons under the arcade on a Saturday for some bacon and cheese for me mam. They sliced both for you as you waited.
  10. no worries mick! another old haunt of mine, the red lion at cinderhill has been boarded up for about 6-odd months now, with its proximity to a tram station, and the fact it has a massive car park, i.e. land, i think this pub will disapear, to be replaced by a rabbit hutch development. also one of the outbuildings appear to be burnt out. and before i forget the pub opposite the gas works entrance on radford road (not sure of the name) is also boarded up and looks like its days as a pub are numbered i'm afraid. i have been up to my neck in diy this weekend, but as soon as i get a spare bit of
  11. It's the building next to the old Northern Baths on Radford Road. Recently vacated by P.Waller Group (Heating Engineers) I don't know the history of the building though so I look forward to being enlightened.
  12. I used to work there (I am not to blame this time as they had already gone bust when I started) in a poor attempt to resurect themselves I was employed as a sales rep!!! .We used to make Lun Jeelers, Barnips( a bit like fishermans freinds ) and all sorts of boilings including chocolate limes (incidently my mum and dad met over a bag of Barnets chocolate limes but thats another story) the factory was on Cobden street just off Ilkeston road near the junction of Radford boulevarde
  13. N0, there was an electronics shop on both sides of Palin Street in the 60's. I am sure it had a name like Scientific Exchange? There was also the Valve Shop on Radford Road (might still be there?)
  14. Brilliant absolutetly brilliant .Sheer poetry ,shame to here he's retired .Great day out in the back streets of ever sunny Radford !!! Love the stuff on you tube my missus can't beleive her eyes / ears !rotfl!
  15. Looking towards Vernon Road from Radford Road just before the junction with the Ring Road (Valley Road) at Basford?
  16. ...and on a lighter note,-strange how photos can bring back old memories. The picture of the bus shelter(it was just a post in my day ,outside All Souls church on Radford .B.) reminded me of the Friday nights when a mob of us would catch the bus there and drop off at the Savoy( 2/6d on the back row in 1953-56.),and fish and chips on the way home. Ah happy simple days! B)
  17. Ation Corner Heard a story once that the junction of Ilkeston road and Radford Boulevard was called Ation Corner because on each corner was a Pub, a Church, a School and a Pawn Broker. The Pub was Ruination, The School Education, The Church Salvation but can't remember what the pawn broker was. Can any one help. Last time i passed the Pawn broker was turned into a Butchers.

  23. One record that sticks in my mind is The House of the rising sun sung by the Animals albeit Bob Dylan did have a version of it. I would too be only in my teens when I heard it coming out of the jukeboxes in the pubs about Highson Green. We use to have an hour dinner break in those days and we teenagers spent it in the Pubs about Radford as well as Highson Green, I never spent my money on trivalent things as juke boxes all my money went on beer, cheese and onion cobs and fags. Bip.
  24. Ayup Radford,,Your'e right about the whistle stop, it was opposite Trinity square car park and under the Vic hotel, I used to go there during lunchbreak from peoples college 68/69/70, some sort of railway theme, you could get double diamond though, The Welbeck thats been spoken about was more or less near the exit from vic center leading on to Glasshouse street, and it did have western style swing doors, bit of a western theme there also a bit rough if memory serves.
