I don't recall us ever flying En'suns' of any colour from either end of the rowing boats on Highfields Lake, or when navigating our two man fabric kayaks through the vicious rapids of the Derwent near to Whatstandwell, or even on a windy day on lake Bala. We just didn't care!

Oh no. My father was a born atheist. He would have nothing to do with church, no matter how remotely connected. He was married in a church but, given the incoherent mutterings he indulged in every time the subject was mentioned, I suspect he thought better of it with hindsight. One of the reasons he opted to join DEMS during the war was because he didn't like being forced to attend Sunday religious gatherings aboard RN ships.

Jill Sparrow 10,336
That's them. The unlucky b*ggers got the Arctic convoys. My father got the tropics: Australia included. He always was a jammy s*d. Had a good war, if there is such a contradiction in terms, apart from dengue fever and dysentery!

Although not 'party' political as such, the discussion of Meadows, her supporters and detractors, those whose theories preceded, followed or competed with hers, etc.. is I suppose 'small p' political. That said it is relevant to many other areas which in the old days would have come under the general heading of 'Political Economy' and these days tend towards more specialisation under Sociology, Economics, Political Theory, Environmental Studies, and numerous 'sub sets'. Cliff Ton 10,496
I'm now full of holes. Two vaccinations today - Covid and Flu - at the same visit. One in each arm.
Jill Sparrow 10,336
You're a brave lad, CT. I had my COVID booster on Tuesday at Boots. The lady who administered the jab did my last one. She's brilliant. Didn't feel a thing and no side effects at all. I'm struck by how many people are saying they haven't received an invitation this time. In fact, the only person I know who did receive an invitation a couple of weeks ago says it came from his GP in sunny Bulwell!
trogg 2,020
I received my invitation for my flu and covid jabs today on my return for doctors having the flu jab. Covid jab is already booked for the 13th, I keep hearing of more and more people suffering with covid so its full precautions from now on,
philmayfield 6,206
I’ve just returned from my flu jab at the Lowdham surgery. Christ, it was like God’s waiting room in there. Never seen so many geriatrics under one roof. Made me feel quite young. They were running 20 minutes late so I needn’t have driven there at the speed of light. Late breakfast today!

Jill Sparrow 10,336
Speaking of which...I said SPEAKING OF WHICH.... my sister, who's been a bit mutton jeff for years, went to a high street audiologist recently and was charged the princely sum of £60 to have a tiny bit of wax syringed out of one ear. No olive oil drops first, mind you. GP practices no longer provide such procedures as they're not viewed as an 'essential service'. What did you say? Existential worship? That's no good to me cos I can't hear very well, see! She can ask the GP for an audiology test, however. "An ornithology pest? Yer want to get one o' them bod scares, on proscription!"
Beekay 5,204
Beg pardon, sorry, I didn't catch that.
Jill Sparrow 10,336
The point being that if not being able to hear isn't an essential service...what is?
MargieH 7,614
@Jill Sparrow It must be a regional thing (GP surgeries not doing ear syringing). We have both had ours done recently by the nurse at the surgery. Paul’s wasn’t too successful so he was referred to a clinic in Cambridge where the remaining wax was removed by ‘picking’ and suction. All this was free!
IAN FINN 817
I go twice a year for wax removal at the audiologist you should see the crap that comes out they charge me twenty dollars about eight pounds they use a vacuum method now not the old syringe and the kidney bowl now i have to listen to the wife again.
