I'm not sure that this forum needs RULES. !rulez! Nothing I have seen or read here has offended me but I recognise that others may not feel the same and that I am really not easily offended. In a time when much of our speech & opinions are "under scrutiny" it's nice to have a place where you can say what you think. I think therefore that it MIGHT be an idea to just remind members that maybe they should treat others as they would wish to be treated themselves? Engage brain before opening mouth.? BUT....that's just my opinion. I'm sure others have a different viewpoint and it will be interesting to hear their suggestions.

I agree with Pat,,,,,

As a Newbie on here,,,, I find nothing life-threatening on these pages,,,, and whatever rules are 'made' we can't change the opinions of someone else.

Usually (tho' not necessarily in this case) rules are one (or set of) persons opinions,,,,,, and just as usually - can be so selfish - with its concomitant "do as I say" mentality.

If too many people are narked over someones comments - they make it very clear !

I don't expect everyone to do as I do, but I defend their right to differ !

Ayup all,

I agree with Pat and Bazzer on this one, from what I have seen on this forum it appears to be self policing anyway, I also agree with John,s comments however I think those "rules" even though unwritten go without saying. I would also like to say I think the moderators do a good job on this site by protecting the rest of us from some of the undesirables, unlike some other forums

It only appears to be 'self policing'

The admins and mods put in a lot of hard work deleting stuff.

Particularly overquoting, which is the main problem at the moment with a few members.

The problem with overquoting is easily sorted. Remove the option to do it. Not once have i used this option and have never felt the need to do so. The post No. can always be used as a ref' to a quote if need be. Its as simple as that.

P.S. With all this quoting it means l'm reading the same posts over and over again.

That's about the only thing that annoys the hell out of me .

I can spend 10 minutes reading a 5 minute post because I glance through the quoted post scroll back to see how far back it's from , if it's necessary to include it , then deleting it and finally leaving a (Usually ignored) note to the offender; before finally reading their diatribes.

During this time all sorts of creatures can come out of the woodwork and from under the stones and sewers where they lurk,to try to get in and be really offensive, then I cop it in the neck from regular contributors (Including having to respond to P.Ms ) for allowing the trolls to post!!!

I wouldn't have taken it on if I didn't think I could cope so there is no problem on my part !!

mick2me's last comment (better not 'Quote' it) seems to suggest that Admin / Moderators feel that some rules are needed, and that they already have a pretty good idea what they should be.

Might it therefore be a good idea for them post their ideas and then have them voted on?

I'm new to this site, so hardly qualified to comment, but do use the 'Quote' facility now and again - (hope I'm not one of the 'offenders') though have always tried to edit this to just a few words or single sentence. Would not want to see it removed.

I've enjoyed Nottstalgia from day one because of the good attitude folks seem to have towards each others feelings. With one recent notable exception, now thankfully, removed. For what its worth I think it is one of the best forums on the web.

Most rules seem to be designed to be broken anyway.

I think the general rule of "treat others as you would like to be treated" is as good a general rule as seems to be needed here.

For reference and comparison here's a set of forum rules from another site I visit which has a huge and vociferous readership:

The excessive use of swearing is not permitted.

Swearing in thread titles is not permitted.

No 'Flaming' or personal attacks directed at members of the board, or any other individual or company.

No Graphical Material of either gratuitous violence or a pornographic nature.

Any posts or links to such content will be deleted and your account suspended or banned.

No Warez (links) & Cracks. This includes linking to illegally obtained software, movies & music files.

Observe all national and international copyright laws when posting (including the online media gallery).

Do not post anything relating to the undertaking of illegal activities. Such posts will be deleted, and if necessary, any information may be passed on to the relevant authority.

Always behave in a manner that is lawful under national and international law.

Due to the nature of the new search engine optimisations from the main search engine sites, links to anonymous commercial for profit organisations or business websites will be removed from posts. We hope that all users will adhere to this ruling and would ask that users check the links they have in signatures. Links decided by the administrators and moderators to be to commercial organisations will be removed.

The administrators reserve the right to edit or delete any posts that are in breech of these rules or deemed to be in bad taste.

Talk quietly - DON'T SHOUT.

All posts must be written in English, No text speak please.

Don't spam/abuse any other member via e-mail or Private Messages.

No Advertising. This includes but is not limited to offering items for sale, advertising of your services and/or websites. Permission may be obtained for advertising by contacting one of the admin staff.

I agree the excessive quoting is annoying - but I do find the quote system useful, especially when replying to a single point in a long thread (like I just did on Bip's blog).

The list Stu just posted seems reasonable, but I think very few of those rules are ever broken here, if they are, they are usually taken care of. Like others have said, perhaps a simple "treat others as you wish to be treated" generic rule is all we need - and frankly, I don't even think we really need that.

I will add that I do enjoy this forum, and hope it continues to grow and attract more regular contributors - it is a great way for me to still feel "attached" to the area where I grew up!

We are all adults on here (mainly) and enjoy each others posts.

Too many rules and regulations will lead to members thinking twice before posting, which, in my opinion is not good.

Lets leave it as it is and let the mods + admin deal with the odd (and yes he is  ) member who steps over the unwritten line.

If it ain't broke - don't fix it.

That's wot I say.

Not quite sure what prompted this thread but I have a good idea.

As the forums moron and second in line to be hung drawn and quartered if things go wrong my I concur with what frank and one or two others have uttered.

Lets leave it as it is, if not broken then don’t fiddle with it.

That’s wot I say too.

Bip.

Please don't change the rules, I can be a pain in the arse, I know that, the subsequent comments are well deserved, and accepted, thats what a proper forum is all about, say what you bloody well want and be damned, don't get upset about the consequences.

My only comment is that sometimes rascist comments can get a bit much, personally, I don't give a chuff, I usually share the same sentiments anyway, but I worry that Big Brother is watching, and trouble could be brewing, it also makes the site look like a white, Union Jack flying enclave that doesn't encourage 'others' to take part, it shouldn't be so, given the population of the City, it would be nice to see other voices, but is this forum proving a point, 'others' aren't to be encouraged to join, assuming they give a damn of course, but lets not forget that the Pakistan Railway system gave us the chance of seeing the last inside cylinder 4-4-0's in action, are there any Asian keen types out there willing to show their enthusiasm about this, I doubt it, but who knows, they should be encouraged to do so, whatever you think, they are part of this country and will forever be so, give some of them a bit of respect, they deserve it, they're not all terrorists you know.

Ayup firbeck,

I would have thought, with your connections, that you would have had some friend/family member or some other acquaintance in one of these countries that you could have encouraged to join the forum, OR, could it be that THEY don't want to join in, the good thing about being on a forum is you are practically anonymous if you wish and NO ONE discriminates against any one else

I was not referring to you my friend.

It's not many times that I've been on here when someone has been racist - in fact I can't recall a single occasion, but I'm sure someone will remind me.

but I worry that Big Brother is watching

It's not Big brother - it's Bip !laughing!
