  1. 13.7 billion is 0.7 away from 13 but only 0.3 away from 14 so the correct answer is that it is nearest to 14 billion. 13 13.1 13.2 13.3 13.4 13.5 13.6 13.7 13.8 13.9 14 Here it is in graphic form. Far nearer the 14 than the 13
  2. The pub with the green phone box is the Double Top at Chilwell apparently.
  3. I don't now if it's relevant but the family name Querneby relates originally to the owners of Quenby Hall in Leicestershire. In the late 16th century lands in 'Maperley Closes' were in the possession of members of families called Staples, Querneby and Blyth, hence the 3 names being used for roads when that area was developed. FWIW I know about the Querneby connection because I used to ride out at Quenby Hall with the Squire's son.
  4. I get fed up of being harangued by the self- service units. 'Please remove item from bagging area. Please re-scan item. Please wait for assistance. Do you have your own bag?' I want to set up a gag where the self-service unit announces your PIN when you put it in 'YOU HAVE ENTERED 2367. IS THAT CORRECT?'
  5. I worked in the upstairs room of The Bell a few weeks ago and was looking out of the window towards Yates's. It was noticeable that there were no promo girls outside giving away tickets for the bus to Isis. There used to be quite a crowd around there at one time.
  6. When the Black Orchid first opened, the manager was Mike Hilkene. He left First Leisure for a time and Ian'Bomber' Harris took over. In the mid-90's Ian was transferred whilst Mike Hilkene returned as area manager and Pete Walsh took over at the Orchid. When the club closed to refurb as Isis, Ian Harris was back as Pete Walsh had moved down to North Acton then Uxbridge. Unfortunately, one of the first things Ian did was to lose Sue Brailsford whose little black book used to bring all the 'movers and shakers' into the club and she moved to the newly opening Faces in the Lace market, taking many
  7. We take it in turns. Just by chance it's your turn next.
  8. Back in around 1997 I ordered a Raleigh M-Trax bike for my wife as a Christmas present, paying the whole £530 in advance. When i collected it a few months later, that model had been upgraded to a £875 version so i got a bargain. A couple of years later, my wife no longer used the bike and it got stolen from her father's garage. The insurance sent us a Halford's voucher for £1000 ( the maximum insured) and my wife suggested I got myself a bike with it. Just at that time GT Europe went bust so the £1000 voucher bought a £1950 replacement mountain bike (now £1050) for a total outlay of £580 over
  9. James Burke did a show many years ago where he explained why it was mathematically unlikely we've been visited by 'aliens'. Whilst i can't remember the numbers, the logic made sense. Firstly, if we calculate the number of stars * the likely number of planets etc we get to a number so large it's hard to imagine ( we'll come back to that). We then divide that total by some other number (let's say 1000) to get the number of planets that are the right distance from their star to potentially support life. By that we mean planets that will have an atmosphere and aren't completely arid. So we now ha
  10. If you travel between Nuthall Road and Aspley Lane, halfway along on the right is a single house completely different to the rest, and behind it, on Newlyn Drive is another individual house. Both were considered beyond saving by the insurers and were completely rebuilt.
  11. The secrecy is mildly amusing. The house having been used in a TV series doesn't put it at any higher risk of burglary or anything. And I don't think there's much danger of anyone starting bus tours. Alan never kept it quiet anyway so lots of people know.
  12. The house used was, at that time, owned by the Managing Director and owner of ERF Cables, Alan Combellack. He got £10,000 a series for use of the exterior of the house and one year donated it to Nottingham Junior Ice Hockey Club as his son played.
  13. Steve Merike ran for Nottingham City Council as a Conservative in the late 80's/early 90's under his real name.
  14. If you were at Crane then you were supposed to serve the monarch and the Empire. Probably sent to die in the trenches by someone who went to the High School.
  15. My rugby club, Moderns, used a swan as well because the land we play on had been owned by the Clifton family. Whilst there is a proper Clifton family crest, A swan (sometimes peacock) and the mottto Tenez Le Droit were also used by the family. I seem to remember there's a marker somewhere (like a milestone) with the swan on in the Clifton area but my memory of where fails me. http://www.clifton-village.org.uk/
  16. There's no such thing as a bedroom tax.No-one's taking money away. It's not tax when you simply give people less free money.
  17. Shame it's not today. This afternoon I'm on slab square looking after the sound for today's singer on the beach.
  18. The original Avengers were in the 60's, Starsky and Hutch were 70's as was The New Avengers which is where Lumley came in.
  19. The photographer is standing opposite what is now Joplin's bar. It was definitely not taken on a Friday because there would have been a market stall where he's standing.
  20. My memory of the Variety club ( I only went in once) is from 1975. My bedsit landlord used to sell veg from his allotment in a few pubs and he took me to the club one Sunday lunch. As he sold his veg, a young stripper came onto the stage, at which point, the guy standing next to me almost choked on his pint. '**** me' he said, ' I was teaching her maths last year. She's only just turned 16'
  21. Whilst we have large allotments, I still, some years, spread a whole pack of carrot seed onto a 6 inch deep compost filled tray. Result, hundreds of finger carrots.
  22. Shallots are one of my favourite crops that you can save and plant the next year.
  23. Warner bros have just announced a sequel.scheduled for 2015. I wonder if they'll use the hall again.
  24. As regards Mick Knight and djing. When the music upstairs came from the small lighting cubicle on the balcony, if no-one was dancing, he'd rush in, put 'Hi Ho Silver Lining' on and rush out again as the dance floor immediately filled.
