  1. Have you looked at the online census here http://www.findmypast.co.uk/ or here http://www.ancestry.co.uk/ To have full access to the information you will have to pay a subscription, or go to Nottingham libraries (if you are in the area).
  2. Click on the "Quote" button in the bottom right corner of the item you want to bring back.
  3. There are several threads on Nottstalgia about record shops, such as this one. http://nottstalgia.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=8063&hl=%2Brecord+%2Bshop
  4. I think this one doesn't fall into any of those categories. You will probably find a few more in various "Old Nottingham" books.
  5. Hmm. I'll have to go away and try to remember where that came from.
  6. I'll bet a lot of people go past there with out ever noticing it's Art Deco; for some reason it doesn't jump out like other examples. It's only when you look closely at the entrance it becomes obvious. I think at that time, something was demolished/cleared from the rear of the building. When you look at from from the back - along the canal - it's quite spectacular in a different way. Bits were added on.
  7. Plans for a bit of a change in the area. Can't be worse than what's already there. http://www.nottinghampost.com/new-flats-spruce-Carlton-Square/story-22701567-detail/story.html
  8. Mentioned here. http://nottstalgia.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=4779&page=3&hl=mortimer#entry55342
  9. What we definitely seem to need is a Can you confirm if you are serious or not button.
  10. The problem with a "Dislike" button is that everybody has their pet likes and dislikes. Some people don't like the railway threads, some don't like politics, some don't like gardening, some don't like food, etc etc. So if people marked threads they don't like, just about every thread will be disliked by somebody. And I'm not sure what that would achieve, apart from making everyone here look like a bunch of miserable, anti-social complainers.
  11. There could also be another button titled "What has this got to do with the original topic".
  12. ...and that's the location I would have said as well. http://www.picturethepast.org.uk/frontend.php?action=printdetails&keywords=Ref_No_increment;EQUALS;NTGM004513&prevUrl=
  13. He's spent all these years of his life so far on the wrong instrument.
  14. People who made Nottingham what it is today can also include the planners, architects and designers of the 1950s and 1960s who inflicted the concrete block monstrosities on the city centre. They should be embarrassed at their legacy. There's a group of people employed by the Council/Corporation in the post-war years who decided that wholesale demolition of the city centre was needed (not just Drury Hill and Vic Station). It may not be something they should be proud of, but they were responsible for a lot of what makes Nottingham the city it is today. We are gradually getting rid of thei
  15. In case you'd forgotten, there was this thread....... http://nottstalgia.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=1930&hl=berni
  16. Like this? http://www.picturethepast.org.uk/frontend.php?action=printdetails&keywords=Ref_No_increment;EQUALS;NTGM001369&prevUrl=
  17. Where did you get those references from? Given that your references include things like "Box 4 5 & 6" it looks as though they are physical objects which the Archives hold at their office. I doubt it is something accessible online. Have you contacted the Archives staff or looked at their website?
  18. The building which used to be at the bottom of Hockley has now completely disappeared.
  19. Quite a few mentions here. http://nottstalgia.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=8349&hl=skills
  20. That's what I've got! They also appear on Picture the Past.
  21. 'Skin' is the appearance of this forum and the way it appears. Go to the Home Page and scroll down to the very bottom - on the left hand side in very small type you will see 'Change Theme'. Click on any of those options and the page design will change, but DO NOT click on the option of 'IP Board Mobile' because you will get stuck in a hole you can't get out of. SWMBO - used on forums all over the internet by a certain type of man, usually referring to his wife. She Who Must Be Obeyed.
  22. I'm just old enough to remember it, and as Bilbraborn says, it was the massive, smokey, sheer scale of the place which struck you. These two photos might go some way to explaining the atmosphere there. And from the outside........that's Glasshouse Street over in the right background.
  23. The Old Maps site has a map from the late 1960s which shows the road when a lot of the old buildings had been demolished, but before Vic Centre was built....and the Yorkshire Building Society building is clearly still there. Resolution is rough but it's the best I can get. There appear to be a few places shown which did eventually get demolished - for instance, the Welbeck Hotel is still marked here.
  24. Are you aware of this? http://www.railwayarchive.org.uk/map/index.php
  25. This is what was in that location before the station was built. The 'Plough and Harrow' pub on the left here is approximately where Yorkshire Bank now is.
