  1. Selling school equipment wasn't really a good long-term bet, was it. Griffin & Spalding - Gone Redmayne & Todd - Gone Sisson & Parker - Gone Big Co-op - Gone Only D & P left.
  2. All you need to know...or at least a lot of it http://nottstalgia.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=9720&hl=parliament
  3. Chris Perry can still be seen around Nottingham city centre. In the last few years I've seen him several times times when I've been in town on a Saturday morning. Even if you don't know him, you'll spot him - he will be wearing a smart jacket, shirt, tie, ....and shorts. In appearance he doesn't seem to have changed over the past 40 years; same build, same beard, same voice. I was in Fleming A, but a few years later. Tutor then was Mr Holt, but he left and was replaced by Mr Price. I never knew Hind as housemaster; he left just as I started and his successor was Mr Smart who I always thou
  4. Thanks for posting that robinwood....there's one slight problem in that you've got your Flickr account set to "Private" so that when anyone clicks on that link they just get a message telling them they can't see it I'm sure you can sort it.
  5. Small world. I was also taught by three of those four (Dennis Allen being the only I didn't experience). When I was there Mullaney was Deputy Head but still doing some teaching. He and Bill Chapman both left by the end of my first year.
  6. Taken from Alexandra Court or Hine Hall? (definitely somewhere up there)
  7. I don't know the area very well, but scroll down this thread to post #11 and you'll find the answer is a bit complicated. Apparently there were two different locations; it moved over the years. http://nottstalgia.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=6701
  8. The Nottingham bits are Interesting. The views from the Castle show an area which has changed massively since the film was taken. It shows what is now the Castle Marina complex - with housing and retail parks - when it was still an area full of railway sidings and goods yards. And back then Castle Meadow Road was a road going nowhere with a few warehouses and factories. What you see here was totally cleared in the 70s/80s and is now completely different. But the scenes in the city centre (Lister Gate, not Carter Gate ) have hardly changed at all and could almost be taken today. There's now
  9. That is actually fairly accurate. Most of the destruction of Nottingham took place before 1974. Drury Hill had been demolished; Vic Centre and Broad Marsh Centre had been built; Maid Marian Way had ploughed its way up through the medieval streets around the castle; Victoria Station had gone; the Meadows and St Ann's had been razed; tower blocks were no longer being built. The major disasters had all happened by 74. The worst things to happen in recent years are the Trinity Square mess, the Contemporary building; and the dreary, slabbed Market Square.
  10. This photo has appeared in Nottstalgia more than once before, but it fits this thread as well. A nice example of a gas light in Charlotte Street, conveniently helping the gents with their aim.
  11. And this is the opposite extreme http://youtu.be/xQ7AoZbuzr4
  12. Do a Google Image search for Fat American Cops and see the problem in a whole different league.
  13. That is the correct response. If you had heard of him, it would show that you've been watching children's TV. I'm pleased to say I'd never heard of him either.
  14. My mum and dad were married by then, but I don't think they'd even thought about me at that stage.
  15. Must admit I don't remember that particular thread but I'm sure you're right. One which I do remember on a subject in that area, was the thread about finding the location of Melbourne Street; which turned out to be the early name for the stretch of Mansfield Road near what is now Vic Centre clock tower.
  16. I remember the early days of the net when the only way to access was on dial-up. If you ever find an example today, you can't believe how slow and weak it was. Broadband is the greatest invention since sliced bread.
  17. Hint taken. Not perfectly clear, but readable I hope. Learned something new - Forman Street was known as North Street until around 1900.
  18. And to prove it, here's the Hockley one - what's left of it. After it finished being a Woolworth's, it became a club for a while, which explains some of the colours
  19. If you read the piece linked to the Daily Telegraph, it looks like the sun never really rose on solar power. At the end of that article, there are a number of messages which highlight relevant points. Such as...... The original figures promised were based on a government subsidy which was always prone to change at any time; guess what's happened....... The returns don't seem to be quite what was promised. It will take many years before energy savings will pay off the initial outlay. What happens if the panels need maintenance/repair? Some of the companies who fit them may be little better
  20. I didn't photograph it, but Argos are one of the few companies still there. Amazingly, they've managed to survive. So your ex-supervisor may have picked a winner after all.
  21. There were quite a few suggestions made in this recent thread http://nottstalgia.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=10968&hl=
  22. Decided to grab a few photos of the emptiness. If you haven't seen inside Broad Marsh since the 70s or 80s, this might disturb you. Bear in mind these were taken about 9am on a Saturday. But also bear in mind the place doesn't get much busier at other times because there's nothing for anyone to see or do. The big white space is where the Co-op used to be. On the left is the entrance to Lister Gate Where the Co-op used to be, from the side. The top level entrance looking out towards Middle Pavement The modern world; Poundland and an empty space The top entrance - near Drury Hill.
  23. Draw your own conclusions http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-22623964
  24. That's the one, the entrance/exit which comes out where Drury Hill used to be. All the shop units there have been empty and boarded up for several years, as though something is in the pipeline, but it's never happened. Yet.
