  1. We’ve had a fantastic day at a ‘Help the Heroes’ Charity fundraising event in Edingly in the grounds of a most wonderful property owned by friends of ours. There were around 300 guests, a sit-down afternoon tea, champagne, wine and beer, great live entertainment and mermaids in the swimming pool! Before all of that we were expecting the Lancaster Bomber to fly overhead but it never showed up, however the Army Parachute Display team dropped into the garden. Several Army veterans, with missing limbs, spoke about the support they’ve been given by the Charity. One of those was J J Chalmers,
  2. Happy Anniversary BK, hope you’ve had a lovely day.
  3. Ah, I’ll have to find it on catch-up as we’ve been out all day. I applied to go on it with some Albert Ball memorabilia that has been in the family since before he was killed, items that nobody else has seen. My Granny and her parents and 2 sisters lived close to the Balls in Lenton and knew Albert really well. When I contacted the Antiques Roadshow they wanted photos and descriptions of the items, I did send what they asked for but in fact I was a few days late applying and was presumably put on a waiting list but I never heard a word from them, so the treasured photos and letters from the
  4. Thank you Nonna and all for the birthday messages! Had a fairly quiet day but went out for dinner this evening with friends. Took things steady because tomorrow we’re off to a Charity ‘do’ at Edingly, which is an annual event raising money for injured military veterans. At 12.38 the last surviving UK Lancaster bomber will be flying over the event, the Nottstalgians residing in the Trent Valley may get a glimpse It will be 8 hours of food, drink and entertainment so decided to get a driver to take us there and back so as not to risk the driving licence!!
  5. Had a lovely day on the coast. It was the first of 4 days of the Bournemouth Air Festival, the first time we’ve been here for the annual event. We didn’t go into Bournemouth but watched as much as we could from our terrace a couple of miles away. The Battle of Britain Memorial flight of Lancaster, Hurricane and Spitfire flew right over us on the way to Bournemouth, there was a Typhoon hairing around the skies and the Red Arrows spent about half an hour here. I kept thinking they’d finished their display and then they appeared again. One of the Red Arrows planes went missing after a few mi
  6. It was tough, I could smack that Haaland in the gob! Never mind, Forest were playing one of the best teams in the World, there won’t be many games as difficult as that one.
  7. Oh yes Rob, of course she would have been there too, we were on the same course!
  8. In 1966-67 whilst on a Secretarial Course at Digby College we were taken to the old Sorting Office on Huntingdon Street, I think for the purpose of explaining the introduction of Post Codes nationally. Since those days I’ve lived in 7 different houses and remember every post code (and telephone number) but I can’t remember what I had for my dinner last night.
  9. Cav died several years ago following a ‘routine’ operation but Gordon is still around, overseeing his empire, he’s mid 90s now. The Pickerings did well.
  10. I did a Speed Awareness Course there about 3 years ago, quite handy as it’s only a 10 minute walk for me. The one and only time I’ve eaten in the hotel was in 1987 with my parents, it was one of their favourite restaurants!
  11. My husband had a mobile phone in those early days. One day he was trying to make a call while driving down London’s Park Lane and got a crossed line. He realised that it was a chap he knew (and didn’t like very much) having a humdinger of an argument with some other chap. I’m sure ‘crossed lines’ were commonplace back then but unusual to actually end up listening to someone you know who was 30 miles away.
  12. I read recently that the Red Arrows have lost 2 pilots this year for being bad lads …… one drinking too much alcohol and the other for having an affair with a (female!) junior pilot. So they’re down from 9 to 7 planes for their formations. Apparently 2 senior guys were recruited for the Jubilee fly past in June. We’re hoping to see them at the Bournemouth Air Show at the end of the month. We won’t bother going into Bournemouth, too much hassle, but we should see them, and other planes, flying right in front of us over Poole Harbour. I’ve read that the Arrows will be flying on all 4
  13. Yes it was a Police Station but is now a Lymns Funeral Home.
  14. Sorry for more than 3 year delay @Compo ……. Georgie Johnson lived on Cross Street opposite the end of High Street, in a white painted house with stables attached. Pretty sure his Dad was a funeral director as well as a coal man. Georgie was a blond good looking lad, a couple of years older than me ….. that’s why I remember him!
  15. Your place of birth still looks good Tony, oh and welcome to Nottstalgia, even though I know you’ve been this way before!
  16. Just read that Phil spent 7 hours driving today, I assume that’s there and back from wherever he went. On Friday I had a horrible hot day in my car on the M1. I set off to go from Nottingham to a Garden Party at Milton Bryan near Woburn. An event we attend every year but this year I was going alone. I left home at 9.30 for a 90 mile journey to friends house for 11.30 to then go with them to the ‘do’ at 12.15. As soon as I got on the M1 at J25 the overhead signs were telling me that J14 to J13 were closed. I thought Ok I’ll get off at 14. Then a sign telling me 7 mile queues from j15 to 14.
  17. Do you want me to ask him? I’ll tell him he’s been rumbled
  18. Oh Ok, then there are two, same name, same school, both were lecturers. My friend was Chief Examiner for O and A Level French too, along the way.
  19. Tony Whelpton is a Facebook friend of mine, lives in Gloucester and is the father-in-law of one of the directors of our company. Doubt if Col would have any school contacts who knew him at school because he’s nearly 90 years old, he’s telling you porkies if he said he was born in 1946. A lovely man.
  20. I watched the game but missed the last few minutes. One of our girls, Sophie Tolchard, is the cousin of my son’s best friend from school. Her brother Sam got a Silver medal the other day too. The Tolchards are a very talented family. Roger and Jeff played for Leicestershire cricket, Roger making the England team. Sophie and Sam are the kids of their brother Ray, who passed away many years ago, think he had MND. Their sister moved to New Zealand and her son, Roger Twose played cricket for NZ. Eddie Tolchard, our son’s friend, is MD of a Sports Management Company, representing many intern
  21. I couldn’t bear them, not my type of music at all.
  22. It looks like we’re about to lose our spectacular cherry tree through lack of water, but possibly because it’s 70 years old. There was an apology of blossom this year but already all the leaves are brown. it’s just like Autumn in Mapperley Park, the street trees have been dropping leaves since June and the road-sweeping truck came around at 7am today, for the first time in months. This afternoon I have a second tree surgeon coming round to quote for 3 trees to be felled and 2 to be topped. Already had one price which was a lot lower than I expected. The biggest issue is that we’
  23. Rob, I’ve sent you a FB PM, thinking of you, don’t worry.
