  1. Just back from having our jabs . There was a Facebook message on our local town site a couple of days ago supposedly by a nurse at the tented showground vaccine site on the way to Falmouth. She said that letters were delayed being sent out for some reason and to go onto the NHS booking site and ignore the "don't book till you get a letter" warning and fill in details . She said nurses were there and plenty of vaccines too , just no customers ! I booked as over 70 and later tried for my wife who is a month of 70 and luckily it took her booking too . All very efficient on
  2. Alan West you can view online old copies of Nottinghamshire papers here but the City newspapers only go up to the early 1950s at present . You can enter a search term here and get snippets but to read the full article you need a subscription . https://www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk/
  3. My wifes sister (a Bickley )went out to Adelaide late 60s or early 70s vowing to return to the UK but never did . On her second marriage now and a few years ago moved to the Gold Coast and absolutely loves it there . She phoned at Christmas and it was a balmy 28 degrees , they rarely wear more than t-shirts and shorts . She's been back just twice for short holidays but would never move back here .
  4. If anyone wants to view the whole film it's now on youtube
  5. Crikey it was 7 years ago we discussed it ! https://nottstalgia.com/forums/topic/11782-they-knew-mr-knight/
  6. Cliff Ton we have discussed this before . These same clips are featured in the film "They Knew Mr Knight" . Presume these location shots were filmed by the same crew . We identified most locations , the only mystery location was the row of terraced houses that appears after the opening factory shots in the film above. The screenplay writer Mrs Whipple , wife of Henry Whipple lived on Ebury Rd so we thought that area featured . Someone identified the station as Leicester .
  7. From memory ,thought at first it was this firm but wrong initials ! . A photo that Cliff Ton posted a while ago , scroll down to photo of bus in front of White Bros. basketmakers https://nottstalgia.com/forums/topic/15235-old-nottingham-photos/?page=2 Of course the baskets may have been made by an unknown company and been especially stencilled with another firms logo .The baskets shown in my link above were stencilled for a Fred Clements a Skegness pantomime operator .
  8. Crikey that's a monumental bit of research . !
  9. My GGGF was in the Southwell Union Workhouse in 1878 . This report in the Nottinghamshire Guardian when he was charged with gross insubordination . SOUTHWELL PETTY SESSIONS. FRIDAY.-(Before Major Becher) INSUBORDINATE PAUPERS. - Joseph Thraves, 41. William Bucklow. 70, and John Wilson, 69, three inmates of the Southwell Union Workhouse, were brought up charged with insubordination. William Shacklock, Master of the Workhouse said the defendants, who were inmates, were set to work in the garden, but on the previous day they refused to work until half past
  10. My son pays for Netflix in Holland and we can log in to use it but it only allows one user at a time (without them upgrading). Luckily they go to bed quite early so it's not often we cant get on for a late night film . Conversely we have a Now TV box and just pay for the entertainments package (for TV box sets usually from Sky Channels ). You are allowed to register it on 6 different devices (can't view on more than two at once) so son in Holland watches on his phone and casts it to his TV via Chromecast .
  11. I think its confusing that there are two Primes on Amazon . We have been on the Prime entertainment subscription for years via the Firestick to watch films etc . Without checking , costs about a fiver a month I think. Then when it was on offer 2 weeks ago for £30 , bought an Alexa Echo 5 and took up the offer of a months trial of Prime free next day delivery and the streaming of 2 million songs . It's in our kitchen and as well as using her for a timer whilst cooking , great to just say "Alexa play The Beatles White Album" or whatever and it plays with good enough sound for me
  12. Sorry to read his Carni , hope you both feel better soon .
  13. With the discussion about Amazon Prime thought I would post this received a few weeks ago . Not sure what the scam is but the subject line gets off to a bad start ! I've omitted the picture of a courier carrying an Amazon parcel as it contains hyperlinks to a website with domain t.moviesnowcity Hej david w**** (1) Importnat Notification. Amazon has 9 new exclusive deals only for Prime members Life is going to be anything but normal in the weeks and months to come, and it's all thanks to the outbre
  14. Not sure how this will format but this email was a new one , supposedly from Currys./P.C.WORLD . Even if I knew what an Unclaimed Order was ,they only want you to log on to your Paypal account . Just two grammatical errors that I can see . Hovering over the link , the Paypal hyperlink comes up as "oxygonpakistan.pk" (which I haven't tried !) Edit : the link is still "live" and can't edit it out so don't click on it . Your order i
  15. Yes Cliff Ton but after further research extra info on this version
  16. Our doctors decided they couldn't cope with giving flu jabs within the surgery and so combined with two other surgeries from an adjacent town , hired a large showground for a 3 day , drive-in jab-fest . You had to phone or book online for a slot . It was literally 35 minutes drive away with the entrance down a country lane , how old folks without transport were supposed to get there , no idea . Anyway there must have been in all about 25 marshals guiding cars through the network of fields with strict instructions not to leave the car . No one checked to see if we had
  17. Great film . Seems a mixture of dates . The play advertised at the Theatre Royal , "Who Goes Bare" with Dave King and Valentine Dyall appears to have toured in 1974 , (unless it toured with the same cast many years earlier) but the scene in the large department store at Christmas seems to have pre-decimal pricing so before 1971 . Wondering what store that was ? About 15.50 in . Big Woolies?
  18. Probably a greater story than Robinson Crusoe but this actually happened . 24 year old George Vason , son of butcher Richard Vason of North Muskham had come to Nottingham to work as a builder but in 1798 joined with a group of Baptist missionaries to the South Seas on the ship "Duff" . After a scary eventful journey outward , they landed in Tonga and initially were treated well by the natives . The main early troubles were caused by a couple of resident British sailors who had earlier mutinied from a ship and probably resented the newcomers . Vason stopped trying to
  19. Sort of connected to the heading . My son and daughter-in-law in Holland had a buying spree on UK ebay for some well known brands of mainly kidswear . Not all sellers were willing to post overseas so 9 parcels came to us to forward them on . With the aid of a vacuum bag shrunk them all into 1 package , weighing under 4kg . Yesterday looked online at Parcels2go and they quoted about £14 (using Parcel Force) to send but as we were passing the local sub Post Office thought I'd try there , for speed , thinking it would be a similar price . Wrong ! O
  20. I've been away from Notts for 40 years but used to enjoy the E.P. when there , favourite night was a Tuesday when the businesses for sale were advertised (though never actually bought one in Notts ! ). My elder brother was also an avid reader and would get a Post each day but I was surprised when he said he no longer bought it . Mind you looking at a story from the Post just featured on Twitter I can see why . It was about a lady who wanted a SMEG ? pink fridge but either couldn't afford it or couldn't find one , so she hand painted her present fridge pink .
  21. My daughter in law is a teaching assistant at a small village primary and had a similar experience . After a few weeks on furlough she was asked to go back but there weren't enough children to look after so she ended up sorting the library out for something to do . Then similarly , was asked to go into cleaning mode , wiping door handles etc . Got so desperate for something to do that they even spent a day removing cobwebs from the fencing around the school perimeter ! Her brother works for a national holiday cottage rentals firm and you would think they would need all the s
  22. Laura History Hunter , not sure if any of the Tiveys still contribute to this site . If you are on Facebook , you may be better joining Gedling Local History page . https://m.facebook.com/groups/1908689169455273?group_view_referrer=profile_browser There is a photo on there of Tiveys bakery....not sure if this link will work https://m.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=1879580768814508&id=100002878098068&set=gm.2271150099875843&source=57
  23. Similar story from my sister who lives in Southern Ireland . She went to her doctors in December and whilst there the doc asked if she had had a pneumonia jab . My sister replied no and without asking her if she wanted a jab , the doc went out the room , fetched a dose of the serum and jabbed it in her arm , saying that she had lost at least 4 elderly patients to pneumonia in the previous few weeks .
  24. It's a bit grainy but here's a pic of Pte J .Lakin . Should mention the other names in case anyone is searching in the future , Pte. H.Dale Pte U.Goldman Pte E. Hawley
