  1. That's definately not the Black Horse at Caythorpe. It's flat around there.
  2. Is their club (the Quernaby Club?) still going on Woodborough Road? A few years ago, they used to advertise bands etc they had on via a poster by the door, but that doesn't seem to happen now.
  3. The trouble is that millions of men served in the armed forces in WW1. I'm not sure you can expect the government - via the tax payer - to fork out a lot of money to digitise umpteen million crumbling paper documents. The government has to outsource the task to private companies, or it would never be done, and the records lost forever.
  4. The Imperial War Museum doesn't hold service records, you need the National Archives. Many WW1 service records were destroyed in the Blitz by the way.
  5. My only memory is the place is once buying a pack of Airfix toy soldiers... US Marines I think. It's funny the things you remember. Does anyone remember a stall against a wall which sold this sort of thing?
  6. How come they were drawn in the same group? To have these two countries play each other was asking for trouble.
  7. What is the building with the ornate clock tower (?) on the horizon on the righthand side?
  8. The footbridge survived into the 90's. I used to go across it quite often.
  9. I heard something roar over my house in Mapperley, and rushed out in to see it turn and come back. It made off towards Carlton. A great sight!
  10. There is a house at the top of Robinson Road (on the left as you go down) with Hovis spelt out in letters on the side. Lots of outbuilds at the back... I think its a nursery now. I wonder if this was your bakery? It looks like it may have been.
  11. Those are superb photos. Thanks for posting them.
  12. The real problem with celebs is the way the gutter press overdo their coverage. They will print anything, and exagerate any story. Whether people are interested doesn't really matter to them. They like to stir things up, build people up and then tear them down. Our media (particularly the lower end) are absolute scum.
  13. The football post was great in the late 70's early 80's when I got it. You could go to Notts, then go to the newsagent at around 1730. A soon as the delivery van appeared, a swarm of buyers would appear. The FP covered the rugby and local non-league foorball too - but those match reviews frustratingly stopped at half time!
  14. By the way, I looked on-ine for the Nottingham Mechanics to find out more about the old building, and discovered that they're still going : http://www.nottinghammechanics.com/home.htm
  15. Wow, that is a magnificent building. Thanks very much. By the way, I went to a comics fair in the monstrosityof a building where TK Max etc is now. That must have been around the late 80's. Don't tell me the Mechanics swapped that lovely building for the successor? If so, it can't have lasted that long.
  16. On post 32 of this thread, what is the interesting looking building on the bottom right?
  17. The police cannot win. Generally I admire them, but they don't help themselves. I saw a group of policemen this morning and they were dressed like a bunch of paramilitary thugs.
  18. It doesn't matter what gossip says about his mother, and his girlfriend is a glamour model. Nothing wrong with that.
  19. The Old Volunteer, Burton Road, Carlton has recently re-opened as the brewery tap of the Flipside Brewery. http://oldvolunteer.com/
  20. A good pub this. I was in last week. Good range of beers, 2 seperate rooms with comfortable seating.
  21. Whew. It's a complete dump, and has been for as long as I can remember, but I've always liked it.
  22. Don't tell me the Old Angel has closed?
