Danny Murray was a Glaswegian/Irish a great bloke who did lots for local lads,he had a passion for boxing and 2 of my sons boxed for Highbury vale and loved Danny,sadly he died in his 40s,but my sons still speak of him with great fondness,......thought you might recall him Ian,he liked his drink and was always about Old Basford.,as were the Lovetts and Larvins.

You can't explain that Bestwood thing can you Ian,......sadly it got out of hand with 'Drugs' in the 90s,..........i remember in the 60s a lad i played football with went to prison for 18 months,and his wife played away with a real hard nut,.........anyway on his release he knew he had to confront the bloke and also knew he'd come off worse,.........well he did and he did..........after,. the hard nut took him in the Heathfield cleaned him up and bought him a drink...............they both passed away 2 or 3 years ago and were still mates.
  4. Did'nt know about Joey Griffiths,always liked him,still see his sister Beryl married Ricky of believe it or not of mixed Mexican descent,he's retired now you might know him he was a Chef and a real nice bloke,they live on Stockhill lane.

I left Nottingham in 75 Ian,probably why i don't recall some of the people you mention.........i think you about ten or so years younger than me,so thinking about it you'd probably know some of the younger lads i played football/drank with ,Paul Randall,Kev Fewkes,Bim Spencer,Chris Scriven,Chris Wright,Beady,and lots of Grays and Alan Cockayne ?

First time i spoke to Stan was in the 'Park Tavern' i was with my ex wife,i went to the bar and ordered my drinks,i was wearing my nearly white 'John Travolta suit complete with Gold chain,we were on our way to a 'do' in town,...........he eyed me up and down,and said 'who the .... do you think you are ?.........taking my life in my hands..i said........'i know who i am who the .... do you think you are ? apart from being Lenny Fishers mate ? (he always drank with Lenny) ............at that he laughed put his arm round me and paid for my drinks,.........phew i thought that could have gone badl

Stan was some character,.....he was never a football man........but remember him turning out for our annual boxing day game on Vernon park ,old'ns v. present day team,(early 70s) he wore steel toe capped boots' don't think he actually kicked the ball in the whole match,..........but he got most of thee players including his own lol. Then in the Heathfield the same night he played the 'Drums' and sang,still wearing the said Boots and flat cap,we gave him aa great ovation when he finished,............well you would wunt ya,..LOL.

Always knew some Lovett's Ian,but the one's i knew were from Old Basford,.......when i played for Park Tavern, Barry Lovett still played a bit,think he was a market trader, i'm talking the 70s........did you know 'Danny Murray who used to run Highbury Vale boxing club with another Lovett who's first name i can't remember ?

    Very sad,liked him,saw him play in his Fulham days,with Bedford Jezzard and the great Johnny Haynes....RIP Jimmy.

Ah yes Ian,they were the days,most roads/drives had a team in the 50s,.......Andover,Leybourne,Teviot,Southglade,Gainsford,Raymede,Carnwood and Arnold rd,......games used to last about 3 hours,played either on 'Back Wall' (High Pavement Rugby pitches) or Bulwell common. Still got my uncles scrapbook,about Bestwood Old Boys,when the best players from the road teams played together,and there was some real talent among them,they were managed by the 'Clarke bros' Barry and Tony who lived on Leybourne (still see Barry).

Went on the Tram into town last night on me lonesome,left the mrs and ex to catch up on the gossip,with a few bottles,............anyway went to the Albert Hall for a meal with some work friends,...........got in town an hour before meet up,was not impressed thought i'd havee a pint somewhere tried 3 pubs including an old haunt 'the Tap'n Tumbler'all ram jam full,.......so trapsed in the pouring rain finally going in the'Playhouse bar' for a pint of so called 'shippo's' yuk. Your right Ian,must admit i'm a bit 'Rose-tinted[ about Bulwell,..........i keep telling Catfan get in early to see it at its best,......my ex and my stepson have been staying with us over this weekend......and i took him for breakfeast in Wethers this morning.....food was good,service great and only heard the F and C word about ten times LOL,............Stepson lives in a posh area down south.......and he thinks Bulwell and its people are great.

  19. £15 million went to klitscho...and £5 million to fury, according to the papers anyway, and yes mick there's always been corruption in boxing as in most sports,but i have all the time in the world for the actual boxers.
