  1. Steve, Mrs Lockwood seemed very old even when I was there! She was a strict teacher and had 'favourites' . Unfortunately, I wasn't one of them (she also taught my brother who was 7 years older than me and she liked him!) I remember horses on the fields, too. I also remember a fire on the fields somewhere near to Somersby Road in about 1953 I think. I remember walking towards it with my friends and seeing and smelling the smoke. But this couldn't have been the fire you mentioned as you were only a Toddler at that time! Of course my memory could be playing tricks and the fire could
  2. I've had a lovely day ....not done much except munch a few (if you believe that, you'll believe anything) chocolates and had a takeaway this evening with all the family. Thank you for all your birthday greetings - I really appreciate it xx
  3. Steve, fancy your knowing Mrs Lockwood - I would have thought she'd retired by the time you started Arno Vale! The Marian you knew, did she have long black hair - that's the main thing I remember about her. Barbara Cornes had eyes which were different colours. We used to ask her if it made any difference to the way she saw things. I don't remember her sister - was she younger than .Barbara? I've just remembered I also knew a Barbara Redpath who lived somewhere round there. Did you go sledging on Breckhill fields or had they already started building all the new houses? Did y
  4. Hello Steve. I was born and grew up in Woodthorpe, but our paths probably didn't cross as you are 9 years younger than I am. I also went to Arno Vale but I suspect the teachers I had wouldn't still be there when you were. There was my first teacher, Mrs Lockwood, then Miss Lee, Mrs Hatter, Mrs Smith? Mr Greenfield? and Mr Turner. Phil Mayfield on here may have some more names and/or corrections to that list. Mr Brace was the headmaster. I knew a couple of people who lived on Melbury Road - Marian whom I used to go to ballet with (can't remember her surname) and Barbara Cornes wh
  5. I love those thrift flowers - they seem to thrive on very little..... I suppose that's how they got the name. I have some red valerian (aunt Betsy, I call it) but they seem to be crowded out by the pink ones
  6. Watched 'Call the Midwife' this evening... so sad on several levels
  7. He didn't approve of many of my boyfriends, Ben, but I'm sure you would have charmed him and my mum - especially my mum!!
  8. Pleased you've enjoyed your birthday, Ben. I think everyone loves you... It's my birthday on Friday and one of our sons asked what I wanted for a present so I spent half an hour last night racking my brains... could only come up with a new eyebrow pencil, a couple of new sandwich cake tins and chocolates. I really don't need anything else! His wife usually makes a birthday cake and we'll be going round there for supper anyway, then playing games with the kids. I just love the simple things in life..
  9. NBL, it's strange that you were standing by the kitchen sink when you got in trouble with your mum, because that's where I was when my mum tapped me sharply on my arm for saying something wrong (I can't even remember what it was) I, too was about 9 or 10 I think. It was the only time she was ever cross with me and it really shocked me. My dad never smacked me but he did get cross sometimes when I was a teenager, especially when he had to come outside to tell me it was time to come in when I was kissing a boyfriend goodnight at the front gate!
  10. A clutch is a desperate grab which doesn't get you anywhere as in "clutching at straws".
  11. The 'beast' is melting so now we await flooding - not our house I'm pleased to say, but we have a lot of slow flowing rivers in the area...
  12. Phil, we're the same age and I'm not too old to attend meet ups..... yet!
  13. "Perhaps when spring is here". Phil, does tat apply to getting another Morgan or coming to a meet up?
  14. Thanks Loppy. She's accepted she's not going outside now and is just sitting on the floor staring into space. I expect she's trying to make sense in her little brain about what happened to her today.
  15. One of our cats has had a couple of teeth extracted today. She's fine and doesn't seem to be in pain, unlike us who have had to pay £342.... she has to have a daily squirt of antibiotics for 5 days and a daily squirt of mouthwash for 4 days. Dental work isn't covered by pet insurance! At the moment, she's she's wailing at the cat flap because she wants to go outside (not allowed until tomorrow) because she doesn't much like the litter tray
  16. The trouble with towelling nappies on freezing days like this is that they were like sheets of cardboard on the washing line!
  17. Thought the video was funny, except for the bad language....! Is the last post on that hill near you? It doesn't look too snowed under there. Keep those ears (and everything else) warm
  18. I can remember 1947 and climbing up the snow banks on Woodthorpe Drive wearing my little wellies! They were very high, or at least that's how they appeared to a 4 year old...
  19. Comments on the Cambridge Evening News have called it ' a flurry from Surrey' as we have had so little snow up to now. Despite this, a reduced train service to London has been announced already, because they 'don't want people waiting around at cold stations'' for trains that aren't coming....??
  20. If it seems strange to you, Loppy, go and see the doctor. It could be a transient ischaemic attack (TIA) and you may need MEDICATION! I know you don't like the latter but it just may be necessary. How's your blood pressure or don't you know.... ? On the other hand, other things can mimic a TIA but in any case GO AND SEE THE DOC He might just say you've lost a few more marbles than usual that day but ...ditto..
  21. All the best for your MRI this morning, Catfan. Thinking of you x
  22. I, too, used to play near that stream - I remember we used to climb on a thick branch of a tree which leaned over it. I think it was minnows and sticklebacks we used to try and catch (at least that was what I was told - I'm no expert on fish!). I'd have been there at the same time as Phil, but by the time Lizzie and Compo frequented that area I'd have been a teenager with other interests! (Could say I had different fish to catch...)
  23. Carlton.... So did RH kill his stepfather, I wonder, and was he really of noble birth? Again, I have read conflicting accounts.
  24. Carlton, I suppose I was referring to other accounts about the life of Robin Hood that I have read..... e.g. that he may have lived in the 13th century and not the 15th and that he may not have been of noble birth. If Robin Hood met with Edward 111 3 years before the future King Richard was born, as it says in the link you posted, then he (RH) would possibly be already 50+ at the beginning of the 15th century - not the dashing young hero we like to imagine! There are so many different accounts one can read..... who knows.
  25. Carlton, some interesting stuff on there, but also differing accounts... as I said on a previous post, I suppose we'll never know for certain who Robin Hood actually was, when and where he actually lived or whether he actually robbed just the rich to give to the poor! I just love the stories and films, whether they're inaccurate or not...
