  1. HR, I can remember "When a knight won his spurs..." but I had forgotten the other song until I heard it. Even though I probably haven't heard it for near on 65 years, I still knew most of the words! It was great - thank you. i agree with you about nostalgia - only the other day I was playing one of the 'Dreamboats and Petticoats' CDs, singing along as you do, when I just started crying and couldn't stop for all the people I'll probably never see again.....
  2. So sorry, Rog, that your Christmases weren't good. It's not only made me feel sad, I feel angry as well at the injustice in your story - no child anywhere should have gone through pain and sometimes disappointment at such a special time of year. I know worse things have probably happened to children across the world but I know YOU, and it has really affected me hearing what Christmas was like for you when you were young. Hope you've enjoyed some Christmases since?
  3. We never had a proper Christmas tree as we had some fir trees in the garden. We used to cut big branches from the trees and put them in a bucket which we decorated with Christmas paper. It used to look lovely when it was all decorated. I had a pillow case put on the bottom of my bed on Christmas Eve and when I woke up on Christmas morning - usually around 3 or 4am - it was full of strange shaped boxes. I often used to open them all by myself on the bed and sometimes I even went back to sleep again! But I do remember once shouting to my mum: " He's been!" and she came in my room to
  4. NBL, There are still a few schools for hearing impaired students, also for those who are visually impaired but this is not their only option. There have been huge advances in helping those who are born with hearing loss - modern digital hearing aids or cochlear implants are offered to very young children and these can help them make more sense of the world around them, especially in regard to understanding speech. They are not a complete answer, though, and some students will always need extra help in the classroom. Apart from these sensory impairments, there are many other ch
  5. I cannot believe some of the last few comments from people who have had no or little experience working in modern day schools! I worked with hearing impaired students for 30 years in a mainstream secondary school, and also spent a couple of years working twice a week in our local primary school after I retired. Teachers no longer just stand at the front to teach rows of children sitting at desks and, as I said previously, teaching assistants are needed to help individuals or groups of children to access the information fully in a way that is right for them, either by signing, simpl
  6. Teaching assistants are invaluable as they can do all those time consuming jobs such as preparing and clearing up after painting and craft activities in the infant school particularly, so that the teacher can get on with teaching! The assistants can also listen to the children read as individuals or in small groups and, of course, there are some special needs children who need a named assistant to help them in the classroom and sometimes the playground situation. In the distant past, certain children, for example those with Down Syndrome or those who are hearing impaired, weren't educa
  7. Sounds as if you had a bit of a trying day, Catfan. Hope you'll soon feel warmer x
  8. I thought a PET scan was to check the microchip number of a lost moggie.....they might find out you belong to the wrong owner!

  11. Thought you'd never ask, Phil! (yes, of course!)
  12. I've kept quiet on this subject up to now, but here's my two penn'worth... I agree that SOME of these sexual harassment/abuse cases that are in the media seem a bit trivial but I think it depends on who was doing it. When someone in power, or someone who has 'influence' in some sphere is the one who is taking advantage by doing the touching (or worse) then It's certainly wrong. Among 'equals' , people's particular views on what is, or is not, considered acceptable behaviour is probably very different and so this remains a tricky subject. Like Lizzie and others who have post
  13. So pleased you're feeling a bit better, Catfan x
  14. But they may only have a very small mass compared with humans - like a speck of dust.... looking at the dusting I need to do in my house, I reckon they're here already!

  22. Because this is a touch screen, I don't have a cursor. There is definitely no word appears when I tap the arrow.... never mind, I'll cope!!!
  23. On my iPad, the heart is grey, then when I tap it it turns green, but the word 'like' doesn't appear next to it. The green arrow appears but it doesn't have the word upvote anywhere! I wondered what you were all going on about when you mentioned upvotes...
  24. So, someone tell me again.... the green arrow is ....what? And the heart is .... what? I need to know because I might have been doing it wrong all this time!
