  1. We often get text messages from our 4 year old grandson, who 'borrows' his Mum's phone when she leaves it lying about. He gets most of the words right - we can understand what he's saying anyway, although usually it's about nothing in particular and ends with loads of kisses!
  2. Hello Angelus_Ricardus. Hope you'll keep posting
  3. Mick, I think the Michaels (and Margarets) are just old fashioned now, except I worked with some traveller children just a few years ago and there was one called Michael, one Margaret and one Janet (another name no longer in fashion)
  4. On top of a bush? You should be on Twitter instead of Nottstalgia!
  5. When I was a child living a bit more than halfway up Woodthorpe Drive, my bedroom looked out towards the North west and there was a little wood that Mum and I always used to call 'the blob of jelly' - would this be what you refer to as 'Bendigo's Ring'? (Or am I talking rubbish?). I often thought I'd try and actually find it but never did...
  6. My husband wishes he had found his birth father before it was too late - he only found out about him after he had died. He spoke with a neighbour of his birth father who said that he (the father) had a photo of 2 babies on his bed side table.... His birth mother had died when he and his twin brother were only 4 months old and in those days, the father wasn't able to keep them so they were eventually adopted.

Hello Walter, hope you'll enjoy yourself here on Nottstalgia
  8. Is there a dress code in the Lime Kiln? Wouldn't want to offend anyone....
  9. I don't think God bothers about what I wear in church as long as my 'heart' is in the right place..... And I certainly don't see our church just as a social club - we are all pleased to see each other but the central reason we go is to worship God together.
  10. OK - it's probably real then, but it does look like one of those street pictures doesn't it.
  11. #6. Are you sure that's not one of those street art/pavement pictures? Some of them look just as realistic as this
  12. We had an old meat safe up to 20 years ago, kept in one of our barns, until we found a tiny little chicken in our garden one morning. It had wandered in after it had escaped from a small-holding just up the road from us. They said we could keep it so we let it sleep in the meat safe at night. My mum's little Yorkie at first thought he could have it, so we had to keep a close watch on them when it was in the garden. We thought it might be female and looked forward to a few eggs in the future, but one morning a while later it made a tentative crowing sound! HE grew bigger and bigger (Paul
  13. When I was a nurse in Leicester, some of us used to go to the Palais there. One evening, I decided I was going to be a French girl called Yvette (don't know where the name came from) to see how many boys I could fool. It worked really well as I only spoke a little English with a French accent. The story was that I was staying with one of the other girls I was with. One of the girls even went to the band and said it was my birthday, so they played Happy Birthday to Yvette (It wasn't my birthday) Eventually it became too much bother keeping up with the pretence so I became Margie again - an
  14. I have a pantry/larder/cupboard in my kitchen - I use all three words (not at the same time!) I love it ....... much better than wall cupboards and base units I think. It's also used for a 'cupboard under the stairs' as we live in a bungalow. So my kitchen equipment and some foodstuffs are on three shelves and the floor space is used for the vacuum cleaner etc In my childhood home we had a scullery which is where Mum used to do the cooking, washing up and laundry. It was two stone steps down from the kitchen, which is where we all ate. Off this kitchen was a pantry but unlike mine, it
  15. DJ360 #50 about speedos. Could the explanation be that some 'budgies' these days are smaller than they were a few years ago? For the men who wear looser trunks, perhaps their budgies are more like wrens ? Just a thought....
  16. We were fortunate that my dad had a car even in the mid forties. He worked for the Ministry of Food and needed transport for his work, I think. This meant that we were able to have trips out on summer Sundays to places like Dovedale, Matlock Bath, Newstead Abbey, Chatsworth and occasionally Skegness. After about 1950, we went to Worksop most Sundays to visit my Grandma who was in a Nursing Home called Ashley Grove. Sometimes, if it was good weather, we'd stop off near Ollerton on the way, where we had a picnic and I could have a run around in the bracken with our dog. Sounds a bit boring
  17. Carni, I went out with a boy called Kenny Savage for a few months while we were at school at C le W and he lived in the Carlton area (I think). Never went to his house so I'm not sure. Is he on your family tree?
  18. Does that mean you are going to be rich, Mick? Have you checked that you haven't got that unclaimed Lottery ticket? Only joking - don't think a plant can influence how much money comes your way! I've got a spider plant which has been having babies for about 20 years - I occasionally repot these 'babies' and they all survive, but sometimes there are so many I just have to cut them off and throw them away, although that makes me feel guilty of plant murder!
  19. I really hope that they don't choose 'Jerusalem' as the new anthem! The melody is OK I suppose but I think the words are really stupid and based on a sentimental legend that Jesus came to England once with Joseph of Arimathea! I would refuse to sing it (good job I don't belong to the WI). 'And did those feet ? ' .......... I strongly believe the answer is 'NO' Also the song speaks of defending England with a sword (and a bow and arrow), which, depending on your views about war and violence are either too violent or ridiculous. I know the music of the new anthem would be very important
  20. My parents never used the word 'slormy' but I would use it for an unpleasant bloke who was a bit of a creep - someone who was always 'trying to get round you' if you know what I mean! Is that the meaning you know?
  21. No, Lizzie, she didn't..... although she never banned me from going. I liked it there!
  22. Hello Linda, hope you'll enjoy this forum. I lived in Woodthorpe but sometimes went to Arnold
  23. Blackie, your mention of the Clinic in Arnold Park reminded me of going there for a polio injection (not an impregnated sugar lump - that was introduced later) when I was about 16.
  24. We did have one photo of the Isetta, but I've just looked and can't find it. It was a pale blue colour - lovely
  25. Nothing to do with buses, but we had an Isetta like the one next to the bus in the photo. That was in 1965. Once it wouldn't go, so Paul started to push it down a hill, but then had to run round to the front to get in it - he made it, but it was very funny to watch.. I loved it - wish we still had one.
