CT, ‘Yet again’ is very true. Surely another year hasn’t gone by….. There must be a formula somewhere that explains the acceleration of time as we get older. Thanks for your good wishes for the second time today.

It was a riddle that Samson set. It was ‘out of the strong came forth sweetness’
The answer was of course a lion (strong) and honey (sweetness’) from the bees

Phil, I think it was 1954 !!! That’s when I started CLW

In our village it is £7.90 for one small portion of fish and chips. That does for the two of us. (The fish is very big and there’s plenty of chips)
-
I remember that chip shop very well - a boyfriend of mine lived on Private Road. He wasn’t a Scout though!!

@philmayfield but will bombing the opposition solve the problem or will things just escalate?
I think we can only ‘love your enemies and do good to those that hate you’ on a personal level, although thinking globally, eventually one of the warring parties will have to stop the retaliation so talks can take place. I used to say to our children when their squabbling got a bit physical “I don’t want to hear about who started it - it’s who finishes it which is the most important thing”

@philmayfield tnat quote was the name of one of the water babies’ teachers. They all loved her. Another teacher was called ‘Be done by as you did’. She was definitely NOT popular.
Btw I’ve been told tnat tne eye for an eye quote was supposed to be a limitation of any retaliation.

@LizzieM sorry to read about your husband’s problems. It must be very difficult for him (and you!). I hope a reason for the problem will soon be found x

@philmayfield do you serve teas when you take part in the Open Gardens scheme. Summer meet up at Phil’s anyone?

I totally agree Phil. If whips were banned altogether then it would be fair for all involved. I know there are rules about the use of the whip but that’s a bit like saying you can only beat your dog/cat/wife? a certain number of times each week!!!

@BrewAt least they think your bro is well enough to be discharged. Have they said whether it was a clot or a bleed which caused his stroke?
I really wish him well and hope he’ll continue to improve at home- 1

What about Dick Barton and his friend Dizzy Dial? My older brother used to list to listen to that, I listened but had no idea what it was about. I remember the music though.
-
@MelissaJKelly sorry you have been made redundant - have you any thoughts on what you’d like to do? It’s a bit of a cliche but’when one door closes, another one opens’. This has certainly been the case several times in my life. (Although it can feel a bit bleak when you’re between doors !). x

Just to play devil’s advocate…… Aren't all languages evolving? For example, we don’t still speak or write in the same manner that Shakespeare or (even worse) Chaucer used.
Working with my two youngest grandchildren on French homework, they learn a much more relaxed, colloquial way of speaking than when I was at school.
I think that as long as people can communicate effectively, does it really matter?
There are more important things to worry about than this .It does get me though when commentators talk about the AMOUNT of people rather than the NUMBER of people!
Please reread the first five words in this post! -
@Brew Hope your brother gets proper treatment soon or is he just on observation? What signs and symptoms did he have when he was admitted? Please give him my best wishes and tell him he’s fortunate to have a brother like you to look out for him

@mary1947 hope you’re having a good day x

I remember when I was nearly 4 and walking down Woodthorpe Drive with my mum and someone else. There were huge banks of snow on the edge of the pavement which I think must have been cleared manually. I climbed up the banks and walked along the top. I suppose they must have been about 4 feet tall but they were huge to me!
I remember getting chilblains on my toes and mum putting ‘Winter green?’ on them. It was like a green stick of something which she warmed in front of the fire and then daubed it on my toes.- 1

Thank you everyone for my birthday wishes. Didn’t do anything special during the day but went round to see one of our sons and his family and enjoyed a takeaway together. Perfect!
