  1. Hi Ashley, I had a copy of the article from the evening post about the drug raid at dungeon, will try and find it....did send a copy to Pete , the Vespa man, but he doesn't post now.....
  2. Ashley The house I mentioned is at the corner of Woodthorpe Avenue/ Woodthorpe drive, I visited it last year as my BIL was house sitting for the owner. Cannot remember the tunnel under the pub but do remember the the bricked up arches, yes I saw last year that there was houses now built on the old BT depot.
  3. The only caravan park that I ever knew of in RoT was at the end of Wharf Lane back in the 50s and at least upi to early 62 when we left RoT. I never knew of any other caravan park in RoT. The folk that lived down there in the caravan park were a strange lot and we used to avoid them or, take the p**s out of them and then depart fast...very fast. You would never go down there after dark and we would even give it a wide berth during daylight hours. Never knew or saw any kids from down there, either at school or joining our lot up on the Rec. Ashley states that the caravan park was not ther
  4. Hey, thanks, that's really helpful. Now I have a date and a proper name (my Mum always called him Uncle Arnold though). I can't get to the Notts archives cos I live in Bognor Regis! Does anyone remember his cricketing prowess? According to 192.com there is still an Arnott Ashley living in Bulwell!
  5. I've been at the County Archives today, mainly for my own stuff, but decided to look up a few bits and pieces which had appeared on Nottstalgia. In 1935 Arnot Oswald Ashley (note the spelling, but that's how it is on the original electoral list) and his wife Sarah Ann were at 192 Main Street - The Three Crowns.
  6. Ashley, I remember the Trent flooding a couple of times back in the 50s and water halfway up the road between the river and the railway bridge, the fields below the cliffs between RoT and Stoke Bardolph under water with no weir to be seen and, the football ground below the rec area at the top of Wharf Lane deep in water. And that was before any flood management devices were considered. Think you have hit the nail on the head re your post about the lack of ground to absorb rainfall due to man made cover such as roads, buildings, paved areas etc. By the way, what are they building on the m
  7. Hope you get through all that, Ashley. Good luck Apparently the roads in Gunthorpe have now been closed by the police. Incidentally, a pretty good way I find to know what's going off on the roads generally is Twitter (I know, I know!) The likes of Trent Barton do a fantastic job of keeping people updated on the latest problem on Notts roads
  8. Yes the triumph could do with the Ashley treatment, heres one I made earlier, as they say That Triumph 650 was in worse condition that the T90, it looked like it had been rode home from the white hart parked up in back yard and left uncovered for 20 years! apart from new wheels,exhausts/silencers,seat.mudguards,lights and other bits it had new mains, crank regrind, big ends and rings, I did get it finished, mot'd and on the road, but no photos thus after all vanished years later from my car which was pinched by some barsteward
  9. I think I mentioned it elsewhere on here, but my mate Chris Ashley is now (After a failed attempt at retirement !!) happily working in the south of Spain in a town called Torrevieja. He does the breakfst show on the new station there :- http://radiotorrevieja.es/ going off air at 9.00am (Not sure what his start time is now as he has recently changed radio stations) As banjo48 stated, he is a total profesional in every sence of the word. Brilliant with my kids and always says hello to them on air when I tell him we're listening For anyone who knew him from his second stint in Nottingham da
  10. Loved the video, brought back more memories ! Chris Ashley used to frequent the Bier Keller where I did a bit of evening work, he was a friend of Pete the owner. Always remember his profesionalism, as one particular evening we all were standing having a chat and a beer, and Pete asked Chris to do a quick spot on stage, as he was introduced, it was as though he became a different person and did his 5 mins or so as per his radio persona, then to come back and become the real nice guy he really was again. Also met Dale Winton when I did some work at his house near Mapperley park, very funny s
  11. Ashley, looking on Google, the Manvers hasn't changed much over the years. Think it still has the same paint colour! although I seem to recollect large wooden gates at the side entrance to the rear car park. It would be a short walk, drive or bike to your home from there.
  12. Ashley this particular crossing was down the hill from Heanor heading towards Codnor and then Ripley, more or less across the road from the more recently closed Ormonde colliery at Loscoe. The Cromford road you mention did have two railway crossings. The first was for the Smiths flower mill and the second was for Moorgreen Colliery both linking to the Midland line. The Moorgreen crossing was gated, I was held up there many times.I cant remember ever seeing the Smiths one used.
  13. Ashley, the other two are apparently Langley Mill http://www.pictureth...000005&prevUrl= and Ilkeston http://www.pictureth...000516&prevUrl=
  14. Ashley, looking at an old map, on the road from Codnor to Loscoe there was a railway line going across the road, so I presume that is where Loscoe crossing was, there is also a station on the map Crosshill and Codnor station. Looking at a modern map there is a small street, called station lane, this is between Codnor Denby lane and Waingroves road
  15. Ashley, I think there is the remains of an old support post on Station road at Awsworth, it is similar or the same as the 1 near the hayloft.
  16. Thanks Brian, Stu and Ashley for these memories. What is interesting is Ashley, and I think some others earlier, recalled a smoke trail. This either implies a possible fire in the engine or some other problem. We know that pilot, Dick Peach had tried unsuccessfully to relight the port engine after it had flamed out earlier when he was approaching to land. I did not know about this smoke though. Some of you may know that the Canberra was notoriously horrible at asymmetric (i.e. single engine) landings, especially when power was over-applied to the working engine. This is what happened th
  17. i have a book called "Victorian Nottingham by Micheal Payne whose grandfather, Edwin Gordon took quite a few photos around nottingham between 1890 and 1912 its been somewhere in the spare room not lost, just "put safe" as is the way of things, i found it today whilst looking for something else entirely. o.k. everybody, guess who just found out how to screen cap from google earth! i think the next pic is roughly where the above was taken, the only clue i could use is the house frontage in the top left. this, i think is the anarchy bridge without the tuckshop (or any other buildings!) n
  18. Interesting debate and after a bit of research, found that there was, as BulwellBrian and others have stated, a Bulwell Forest and a Bulwell Common railway station. It just depended on which line you were on! Topic covered before on this site http://nottstalgia.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=6221 Google and the Wikipedia thread has more info on the two stations, as well as the subject of the common ground http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bulwell_Common_railway_station Ashley will be able to tell us more....I'm no train buff.
  19. Yes Ashley it was Kingsthorpe Close, but I dont think it was ever named Kingsthorpe Court, all the addresses would be Kingsthorpe Close. Caunton Avenue flats were dreadful! There were also some flats on the left at the bottom of Woodborough Road, that had 'ski slope roofs' I see they have gone too.
  20. I've been trying to send a pm to Ashley but getting a message stating "The member Ashley cannot receive any new messages" - does that mean his mailbox is full?
  21. I have noticed that Ashley & Katy have been talking about butterflies being sent from someone whos passed over, Im wondering if anyone believes the link between deer and someone who has passed. Someone told me a while back that when you visit someones grave, to say thank you, sometimes they send a deer... Looking this up i came across a beautiful story about a 12 year old girl who died and every year the family would get together and have a picnic by her grave. One year a dear walked strait up to the stone and licked it, they say she sent the deer along to say thank you! Well strangely, I
  22. Ashley, I think you might've missed this thread http://nottstalgia.c...hl=bulwell hall
  23. No Ashley, The scumbags in Wollaton are your upper class scumbags ! That lot will fiddle their tax & vat etc not forgetting fiddling the expense account. A scumbag is a scumbag !! no matter where you live.
  24. Back in the early to mid 50s, there was considerable barge traffic going up and down the Trent. I am not talking of your yuppie, floating homes or narrow boats but the real thing. Big, long and wide low lying barges carrying freight and sometimes towing another one. You could feel them approaching with the deep throbbing of their motors through the water and the drop in the water level along the banks as they approached and then the wash from their wakes. Now, for ROT boys with nothing better to do, we found it amusing to bait the bargies with name calling and throwing stones at them.
