  1. There was a crash on the A46 bypass. We caught up with the jam at Kelham and managed to turn round in a gateway. Instead of Waitrose we finished up at Morrisons Netherfield!
  2. The largest boat we had, which never left the Trent during our time, was ‘Sybaris’, a 35’ motor cruiser built locally at Langar by Bourne Plastics. At one time they were at Netherfield and built grp body shells for Lotus cars. It had two Ford Mermaid Diesels and the generator was the engine from a Sherpa van. She had fore and aft double cabins and the main deck could be converted into a sleeping area. I bought it from Roger Pearce, who had the motor caravan dealership, Brownhills, at Newark. I sold it to the owner of Newark Marina who did take it across the Chanel. It was moored down at the Is
  3. 97, Dunstan Street, Netherfield, Nottingham, the place of my childhood. Living at 95 were the 'Hooper's' and at 99 the 'Williams's'. This was a council house, one of two separated blocks of 4 on that street which consisted of terraced houses, in blocks of 20 or more. The street lighting, initially, consisted of gas lamps giving out an eerie yellow light. Every other one had a cycle tyre hanging over it, being used by children as giant hoopla's. Netherfield was a railway and mining community. At what was called the bottom end of Netherfield was the largest railway marshalling yard in the c
  4. One of the best Nottingham videos I've come across. It concentrates on steam trains, but don't let that frighten you off. There's a lot of material showing the area around the railways.....eg sequences at Bulwell Common. The first 3 mins are Nottm city centre - and it's worth watching for that alone.........then 10 mins at Victoria Stn.......then Bulwell, and then in no particular order, Hucknall, Basford, Netherfield/Colwick, Kimberley, Linby, and all points north. Sometimes it gets a bit boring, but you just fast-forward for a few minutes and get back to something in
  5. Going back to my birth 70+ years ago I find it so sad that buildings and venues that shaped my life are no longer around. The first house I lived in in Netherfield was demolished to make way for the Colwick Loop Road. My first school, Ashwell Street Infants in Netherfield, has been demolished. My second school, Kingswell Juniors in Arnold, has been demolished My Senior school, Carlton-Le-Willows Grammar, is still standing but hardly recognisable from my time there in the 1960s I then spent a year at Arnold & Carlton College of FE (Digby College) on an Intensiv
  6. Digging around Picture the Past I came across this photo which shows something I'd not heard of before - a toll gate at Meadow Road, Netherfield. Looks like this today. Meadow Road was originally called Toll Bar Lane, and the gate survived until the early 20th century. Was it to keep people out, or to keep Netherfield-ites in? How much would you pay to get in to Netherfield?
  7. I would like to share some of my memories of shops in Netherfield as I grew up during the late 60's and 1970's. I was born on Midland Grove at the bottom of Chandos Street just before you go over the rise that runs over the dyke. last week I took the time to visit the whole area for a day as I enjoy distance walking. I now live in Leicester, so took a day out to come over. I covered 16 miles around Bakersfield,Netherfield, Gedling, Carlton, Burton Joyce and Stoke Bardolph. One of the things that stuck out was the demise of all the shops I remembered. Growing up on Chandos Street, the neare
  8. Hi, Was looking for Netherfield on the areas od Nottingham seems to be missing can it be added. Was from Meadow road next to the old Netherfield coaches which became dunn line.

      Hi

For technical reasons I can't add a new category in the list of areas (although I wish I could).

However there are quite a few old threads which cover Netherfield.

  9. hi does anyone know what happened on chandos street? My dad was born at number 6 but it has disappeared, was the co-op bulit there? also does anyone know where the station masters houses was/is on meadow road, on the 1901 census it is placed next to number 50 but without a number. is it where there is a closed down shop??
  10. What a day I’ve had. Tracking down a haggis for our Burn’s night supper tomorrow. The obvious choice was Waitrose in Newark. I got the raspberries and cream for the cranachan and a fine malt whisky but there was not a haggis to be found on the usual haggis shelf. Nobody could explain why there were none on Burn’s night eve. I shot off down the Fosse to ‘posh Morrisons’ at Gamston (not to be confused with ‘shitty Morrisons at Netherfield) and trudged around the meat section where I chanced upon a whole load of them. 908gms, serves 4 to 6! Special offer price £2.15! We can dine out for days on t
  11. I’ve just been for a blood test. Tell me. Why are nurses so chubby? When I feel I could do with losing a few pounds I go, either to the local health centre or to Morrisons at Netherfield and I come home feeling like a sylph.
  12. Until we moved to Nottingham I would never shop anywhere other than Waitrose. There was one right next to our boys school so I dropped them off and I’d finished my shopping by 9am. There was a ‘rough’ Tesco in the town that I only went into if it was really necessary. Coming up here I didn’t know how I’d cope without Waitrose but I certainly wasn’t prepared to drive to the nearest one in Newark. I soon got used to Sainsburys in Arnold but now I use Tesco at Top Valley as well, depending on which way the car decides to go. The shorter trip the better as far as food shopping is concerned so
  13. We don’t stick to one supermarket. All are over 10 miles away. Morrisons and Sainsburys at Netherfield, Lidl at Bingham and Waitrose or M & S at Newark. All have their merits for specific items. We shop regularly, not one big weekly shop. Waitrose has gone down the pan since they appointed Sharon White to lead the group but fortunately she’s going soon. M & S is excellent, Morrisons has the best fish and meat counters and Sainsbury’s next door doesn’t seem to attract the obese plebs that go to Morrisons!
  14. Someone dressed as an elf wanted to help me pack my bags at the checkout on Saturday. I told them to go away in the sort of language they would understand in Netherfield.
  15. In the last couple of months four people have joined Nottstalgia and made their first post(s). https://nottstalgia.com/forums/topic/4554-central-tv-series-boon/?page=12&tab=comments#comment-711268 https://nottstalgia.com/forums/topic/3581-sovex-marshall/?tab=comments#comment-712211 https://nottstalgia.com/forums/topic/4708-building-rise-park-in-1976/?page=5&tab=comments#comment-711919 https://nottstalgia.com/forums/topic/17373-old-netherfield/?page=7&tab=comments#comment-711075 So far none of them has returned since their
  16. Can anyone remember Thomas Pearson Cabinet Makers at the bottom of Manvers Street? Was originally a Victorian School. I worked as a Cabinet Maker there from 1984 until 1990 loved every second of it, was a great job, did not get paid allot however I learned my craft and am thankful to John Pearson who gave me the job as a trainee when I was just 16. Loved working in Netherfield. Went back there two weeks ago as I was passing through, wow it has changed so much.
  17. It’s down to how we want to shop though. Motorists have been driven out of town centres by lack of kerbside parking and are directed to multi storey car parks that cost a fortune. We can go to the out of town ‘sheds’, park for free and easily carry our shopping to the car. The Covid lock down forced us into shopping on line and we know we can get a next day delivery without the cost and trouble of leaving the house. There are a few people who enjoy going round the shops but they are a in a minority. Where I live it’s at least a ten mile round trip to buy anything and that’s just to Southwell w
  18. First time on this site. Seeing the You Tube posting truly brought memories flooding back. I lived at 97 until 1966. Sad to see Ashwell Street School now demolished. My old mate Frank Rowley, not seen him for years. Dave Brown
  19. I think it’s just the decline of the high street in general. People drive to the out of town retail centres to park nearby for free. M&S closed their Newark town centre shop but they’re pulling in the customers at the nearby retail park where there’s free parking; likewise at Victoria retail park Netherfield and at their Lincoln out of town store on Tritton Rd.
  20. Life has been a funny old thing, and although 50 these days is half way through life, it still gets you to being reflective, especially when you see others get tagged much like a giant game of British bulldog, which I used to enjoy at Parkdale primary, they had a big net ball court set out, that was a perfect size with two large semi circles at each end as places to run too and from. Anyways, I always was one of the youngest in class, so come September the first lot of folks from school days will be holding their bats aloft and saluting the crowds as they reach their half century. Can not say
  21. @Messy Hessey: a quick reply. The row of houses where you lived were originally in Colwick. The old boundary being where Charworth Road was built to take road traffic over the railway. West of that was Colwick. The railway station was also built on Colwick land and the boundary was the northern edge of the cinderpath running alongside the railway until you reach Arthur Street where it merges with the tarmac. The bottom end of Netherfield was also Colwick. Even as late as the Great War, house address’ in that part gave Colwick as their address. A little side story: the western bank of C
  22. Serendipity, has a strong influence over my life, so lets go with the flow and it seems that Mountford House is to be the starting point and this Oo ar yer thread a place as good as any other to home my thoughts. It is not just the audience asking who are you? But the writer that of them self. Mountford House wasn't actually the first school I went to it was the 2nd. My first venture into the education system left me with a funny little line which I tell to folks when it takes my fancy of how I was expelled after two days at school. I didn't do nursery as a kid, my nan would look a
  23. @Beekay: to answer your query. After the 1792 enclosure act, land was divided up mainly between the Nobility and the Church. The two Lords of the Manor in this instance being the Earl of Chesterfield and Charles Pierrepont. from North to South there was already in existence a carriage/bridle path leading to the river Trent. Heading West off this path was another public bridle road heading towards Nottingham via Colwick. The former became known as the Nether Field lane. As the route through Colwick was less arduous than going over Carlton Hill, most travellers took the low
