  1. 97, Dunstan Street, Netherfield, Nottingham, the place of my childhood. Living at 95 were the 'Hooper's' and at 99 the 'Williams's'. This was a council house, one of two separated blocks of 4 on that street which consisted of terraced houses, in blocks of 20 or more. The street lighting, initially, consisted of gas lamps giving out an eerie yellow light. Every other one had a cycle tyre hanging over it, being used by children as giant hoopla's. Netherfield was a railway and mining community. At what was called the bottom end of Netherfield was the largest railway marshalling yard in the c
  2. Digging around Picture the Past I came across this photo which shows something I'd not heard of before - a toll gate at Meadow Road, Netherfield. Looks like this today. Meadow Road was originally called Toll Bar Lane, and the gate survived until the early 20th century. Was it to keep people out, or to keep Netherfield-ites in? How much would you pay to get in to Netherfield?
  3. I would like to share some of my memories of shops in Netherfield as I grew up during the late 60's and 1970's. I was born on Midland Grove at the bottom of Chandos Street just before you go over the rise that runs over the dyke. last week I took the time to visit the whole area for a day as I enjoy distance walking. I now live in Leicester, so took a day out to come over. I covered 16 miles around Bakersfield,Netherfield, Gedling, Carlton, Burton Joyce and Stoke Bardolph. One of the things that stuck out was the demise of all the shops I remembered. Growing up on Chandos Street, the neare

      Hi

For technical reasons I can't add a new category in the list of areas (although I wish I could).

However there are quite a few old threads which cover Netherfield.

  5. hi does anyone know what happened on chandos street? My dad was born at number 6 but it has disappeared, was the co-op bulit there? also does anyone know where the station masters houses was/is on meadow road, on the 1901 census it is placed next to number 50 but without a number. is it where there is a closed down shop??
  6. First time on this site. Seeing the You Tube posting truly brought memories flooding back. I lived at 97 until 1966. Sad to see Ashwell Street School now demolished. My old mate Frank Rowley, not seen him for years. Dave Brown
  7. Thought this place needed its own thread. A strange little place I always thought? Though I lived a quarter of a mile away from it near Carlton Square. You seemed to be in a different world once you crossed that railway crossing. My first experience was working there as a young apprentice electrician, building the Coop supermarket around 1970. It seemed like you were back in the 50's. I mean there was that strange cafe at the back of the coop, with the funny spire roof. I expected a Teddy boy jumping out of the front door with a bike chain wrapped round his fist,
  8. Hi I lived in Carlton until the the early 1980's and then had to move to the south coast with my job I have recently bought an old movie poster and it says in the margin Printed by Stafford Printers, Nottingham & London I have tried searching the net and information is a bit thin on the ground but after a little digging I found a reference to Stafford & Co Limited, lithographic printers for the cinema and the railways. It says they started in Bingham and moved to Netherfield I don't remember them, does anyone have any details about the company? Are they still around? Any help wit
  9. Netherfield is unusual in that it isn't an old village which has been there for centuries. It didn't exist until the railways came to that area in the 1870s, so maps before that time just show an empty space where Netherfield would later be. Here's a map showing that space. As a reference point, the red dot is the site of the existing level crossing at Station Road/Victoria Road - the curve of the road hasn't changed. You can also see Carlton to the west and Gedling further north.
  10. Anyone from LONDON NORTH WESTERN TERRACE , NETHERFIELD . I remember walking past the sidings to take my children to school . Miss the old place .
  11. The disused train line that used to run upto gedling pit have been dug up over the weekend & left in 4 piles of 6-10 pieces. Theyv chopped all the over grown weeds away from the gates on victoria road also, leaving just grass & them large stones they have around the lines. ...So, What are they going to be now? New tram lines? a new road? a street maybe? There doing something on the functioning lines too that run across the end of deabil & godfry street. I need to walk past tomorrow so ill get a quick snap of whats left for all to see. I must remember to charge my camera tonight!
  12. Another NEP special - this time Netherfield and surrounding area. https://www.nottinghampost.com/news/nottingham-news/gallery/32-pictures-netherfield-over-last-2748537

  15. I was having a cuppa with a friend who used to live on forester street, we was trying to figure out what the cul de sac once was before it is what it is now, can anyone remember or know? Also, theres a carpet shop (i think) on there, does anyone know what that used to be, a factory maybe? they grew up on the street and recently moved, shes wanted to get abit of history about her street for a while now as weve managed to cover a fair bit from other parts of netherfield.
  16. Searching the 1911 census for Netherfield, I came across John Street possibly among the terraces (London North West Terrace etc). Does anyone know whereabouts this was please?
  17. Hello - I'm originally from Netherfield where I lived until I got married. I went to Ashwell Street Infants and Junior schools then at eleven went up to Carlton Girls' Secondary Modern School in1953.
  18. Anybody remember Netherfield fair in the 60's opposite the labour exchange ?
  19. Does any one know at what time and why houses were demolished at the far end of Arthur Street,as i have traced my ancestors to no 45,on the 1901 census, and when i came to Notts i discovered the house number 45 gone,i know in 1911 they had moved to Marhill Road, but i don't know what happened in between,If i can find out what happened i will know why and when they moved, Was it to do with Railway as i believe he and many neighbors worked on the railway at some time.If any one has any details on the demolition of these houses it would help me put dates on my census information.Thankyou.
  20. I see Victoria Retail Park Netherfield is to have a m@S Food Hall . I just love thier selection of food. For anyone who hasn't got a lot of time or ability to prepare meals from scratch, you can get some delicious ready meals. We treat ourselves sometimes to the 'Tika Masala', highly recommend, but also every day meals are of good quality. A bit expensive so we just shop there as a treat. I shall definately be calling in to check it out next visit to Gedling. I would think there will be Employment prospects taking on new staff as well. Gotta be good!
  21. We took my sis and bil to East Bridgeford on Thursday via the ring road from the MI and through Ratcliff village. We decided to return via Gunthorpe, Burton Joyce, Netherfield, Carlton and then head for Derby. I used to live on Park Rd., Carlton, so I thought I knew the area quite well. Well, it's over 20 years since we used that road and we got suspicious about changes when we missed the Pub in Burton Joyce (was it the Admiral Rodney?) and somehow missed Netherfield and Carlton completely. I was lost until Colwick woods were spotted, then the Notts County ground. Bleddy ell, it's changed a bi
  22. Exactly what the title says. Such a shame really as the current people have really turned it around, Iv been their Ann summers girl for ladies night and despite the negative. Comments people have had about the place because of its rep, I liked it! What a shame to turn something with much history to flats... Again!
