Guest
One thing I'm looking forward to is having all the Family together, as pointed out in previous posts- as the children get older things stretch further from home. My Sons seem to constantly study and my Daughter lives in the School until 6 each week day! Play a game of Jenga...watch the box..and thank whoever for being wherever...lost so many this year to cancer..can't wait to be rid of this terrible year!
poohbear 1,360
I'm one of several million that won't see a living soul...to whom the Morrisons and Tesco Ads of several generations sat round an overloaded table wearing party hats and opening presents is just an annoying fiction.
Jill Sparrow 10,316
Christmas was always dreaded in my family because there was inevitably some disaster. Usually, it was the death of a family member or friend and a sense of apprehension built up as the festive season approached. I still don't like Christmas and neither do most of my friends. Not owning a tv, the commercialism passes me by and I don't submit to buying huge amounts of festive food I will never eat. I abhor waste. I'll usually buy cat food for the rescue centre instead and my meals will be the usual fodder. I probably sound like Mrs Scrooge but Christmas is a religious festival, not an excuse to run up a mountain of debt to take people's minds off their other problems for a few days. A merry festering season to you all....pass the humbugs!

Compo 10,328
Both my father and grandfather died over the Xmas period. I wonder if I will too? What I don't like about Christmas is that it is a hi-jacked pagan mid-winter festival that has gotten out of hand. We need a mid-winter festival to cheer us up in the darkest of days and longest of nights but do we really need all the commercial hype and "must have or you are a miserable b'stard" stuff? What's wrong with a cheery gathering of friends and/or family without the mega expensive gifts and turkeys weighing-in at several tons? Ok, it's nice to get some pressies but why do we all try to outdo each other on the monetary value of these pressies? I'll tell you why....It's those bloody businessfolk and advertisers who see £££s before anything else. Like it or not, we have been are indoctrinated into believing that people will think less of us if we don't spend more than we can reasonably afford. Rant over.

crankypig 457
My daughter and I have decided not to buy each other presents this year,we will have some prosseco and decent food (no turkey,we both don't like it) and just do what we want to do.
Compo 10,328
A new fungus has appeared in the wooded part of the garden recently. I have identified it as Lepista nuda (Wood Blewit). If it is not, I may not have to worry about Xmas - they tasted very good this lunchtime!
Jill Sparrow 10,316
#109 My father would have been proud of you, Compo! He loved his fungi! There's no fungi in my fridge...more's the pity!!
philmayfield 6,187
Similar ones grow here in the Trent valley and I'm occasionally given some. Nothing nicer than blueys with bacon. The problem is that those who know where they grow won't tell!
Guest
Down by my stream earlier this year..two huge football shaped fungi...I got rid..a mate was horrified... they pay €40 a kilo in fancy Dublin eateries!!
Compo 10,328
Giant puffballs Ian. Sometimes they are mistaken for sheep lying down.
Compo 10,328
Jill, I once had Chanterelles growing in the garden. Alas, it was only for one brief season and then they were gone.

philmayfield 6,187
Thanks for the offer. My annual fishing trip to that part of Northern England that some call Scotland is always in September. I'll look you up if I can make it that far north. Do you have roads up there yet? Compo 10,328
Here's a link, if it works, to cheer you up at Xmas. Now you can see why the Scots are always so bloody miserable! https://www.facebook.com/modernpiping/videos/126947297665881/

FLY2 10,109
I bought the last chocolatey item for madam yesterday, and the last alcoholic item for myself, and that's it all done. So I'm sitting smugly in the lounge with my feet up, and a large coffee watching the traffic crawl by towards town. Right, is it Ferrero Roche or Lindor.......... Such a difficult decision ! Oh, there's some Galaxy here. That'll do for starters !
DJ360 6,733
Plenty of Wood Blewits up this way and few if any of the locals know about them. On the other hand I have never found a Field Blewit anywhere.
Jill Sparrow 10,316
All my shopping, apart from a few essentials, milk, eggs etc is done. Presents have been distributed, also cards. Logs and coal stacked ready for use. When I break up on Friday, I can please myself what I do. Moggie food aplenty in stock. Others can queue round the shops, listen to canned muzak and wear themselves to a frazzle. Not me! Bah! Humbug!! Roll on spring!
