Just read that Poundland staffs bonus is a 10% discount off goods purchased and that doesn't apply to fizzy drink and chocolate ! So you have to spend your wages to receive a bonus !

http://www.birminghammail.co.uk/news/local-news/poundland-staff-slam-miserly-christmas-6433089

I was talking to someone who works nights at Tesco and their bonus was a mince pie . There was a Christmas meal in the canteen but that was held on a Thursday when the least number of staff was in .

When I worked for Asda many years ago we got a 7lb chicken and box of Dairy Box. Co-op didn't give a bonus either .

I was then self employed for 30 years so missed out on such treats but we used to give our staff a small percentage of takings as a bonus , something like .002% which usually worked out as a weeks wages extra . Not entirely sure it worked as an incentive to make more sales as the staff just got used to it and probably explains why I am no longer trading and these more miserly firms prosper .

What were your memories of a bonus ?

When I worked for a Plant Hire firm in Carlton in the early 70s, the gaffer took us all to the pub and our bonus was paid in liquid refreshment.

These days, my company contributes a tenner per head to any Christmas meals. But as I don't socialise with the people I work with for logistical reasons (one is in Ayr, Scotland, another in Inverness, and a third in Tunbridge Wells, Kent), that goes unspent.

Funniest story I heard was when my father in law was given a turkey when he worked at Loach's. Neither he nor his wife had any idea what to do with it (they'd come here from Poland, so only cooked Polish food at home) and had to ask the English family next door how to prepare it, cook it, and how to serve it.

I never got a Christmas Bonus but I was only an office gal. My brother worked for Nottm City Council as a Surveyor, during the Medders demolition period, and he received a turkey every Christmas. My sons have a business and they arranged a Christmas 'do' for all the staff last night. Most of the folk said they couldn't make it so it was cancelled and everybody was given a £50 M & S voucher. THEN they all decided that they were available for a party as well!! Hangovers all round today apparently and they can go and spend their vouchers as well ....... crafty lot.

That reminds me Lizzie , when we had our shop and it was in its heyday , we took out all our employees and their partners for an evening meal .

Think once there were 16 to pay for and all out of a tiny 300 sq ft shop and thats as well as a bonus . Aaaahh the good old days !

my daughter's firm goes all out for their employees at christmas. of the 900 odd employees scattered over the states, about 250 work in the phoenix area. the company puts on a christmas dinner & dance somewhere in the phoenix area each year. they fly all their employees plus partners who live out of state, to here. they hire a whole resort for the 'do' and everyone gets to stay there overnight after the party, including the az staff, so no one has to drive. all through the evening they are giving out raffle prizes of x-boxes, i-pads, i-pods etc. the grand prize at the end is 5 days in hawaii for 2, all expenses paid. lots of money bonuses handed out for long employment. she landed on her feet when she got taken on at this firm!

I don't think I've worked for any company that paid out a bonus at Christmas, closest was the last colliery in NSW that was part of the Electricity Commission of NSW, they used to give every employee a Christmas hamper...

When I was a "Student Apprentice" at the NCB, they used to have a Christmas lunch "do" for us at the Coalville Miner's Welfare. A huge buffet lunch and all the free beer we could drink!

The last company I worked for gave us a Christmas bonus - typically about $2,000 - not to be sneezed at!

I have never had a bonus at Christmas when I worked. The nearest we got in schools catering was a Christmas dinner after we had served cooked and served Christmas dinner for 250 children and staff.......and we had to cook that ourselves!

When I was on the railway, we usually all got a pen advertising who we worked for. I think one year we all got a plastic wallet to put our id cards in. My best bonus is free travel on retirement.

Last bloke I worked for (I was only subbing as a contractor) took everyone including partners out for the day on his 72' boat, including me and my wife ! all food and drink supplied and waitresses etc. we cruised around the islands off Fremantle for the day with some fishing and a bit of swimming and snorkeling.

He was a scouser who had done very well for himself and believed in looking after his staff, as in his eyes, they made him money. We also had an all paid xmas lunch on xmas eve at a local pub.

When I worked in the Horse and Groom back in 1966 or 67.Stan,the boss asked me if I could work the lunchtime shift Christmas day.

I did and he sent me home in a cab with double wages,a massive turkey and a belly full of grog.

Great bloke was Stan.
