Paulus 541
Parrafin was dispensed in 2 colours, blue or pink, the blue was Esso, Aladdin made pink, no idea what the difference was. Re' condensation #25, we had a Calorgas heater in the 70's, that caused terrible condensation also................
Limey 242
Yep, the pink stuff was Aladdin - and the paraffin heater we used in our kitchen (before we got central heating) was also an "Aladdin". Paraffin (or kerosene) heaters are still fairly popular over here, but come with masses of warnings. I use one that has a blower, and looks (and sounds) a bit like a jet engine, to try to heat my barn when I am working out there. You will get a condensation issue with any "non-vented" heater as one of the products of burning a hydro-carbon is water vapour!
NewBasfordlad 3,599
First modern coin operated vending machine invented by Percival Everitt 1883 London England. I remember on my first visit to Germany being surprised to be able to buy porn from a machine also inner-tubes for your bike tyres. And why didn't coke bottles smash as they trundled down the chute. Michael Booth 7,364
Before decimalisation you could use shillings instead of Deutschmarks in the German vending machines.
Rob.L 1,091
#39 True. When I was in Germany in 1972, the village cig machine accepted my shillings without problem. I chose Players plain fags, if I recall correctly. Although I had to use them sparingly as I was the only Englischer in the village, so was the most likely suspect for when they found out. Didn't work at the ferry terminal in Hamburg, though. Perhaps they had more sophisticated machines?
Bilbraborn 1,594
You vill not put Eenglish money in ze machines or it vill be vorse for you.
TGC 216
i cant remember wheres TGCwhen you need him i bet he will know i only remember duncans on that side Dennis and that was a food shop. We upgraded from a tall round unsafe paraffin heater, to a luxurious 'Paul Warmer' one. I seem to recall fetching paraffin from Heason's, but got it cheaper from a shop near the Grove Cinema. Cannot recall a vending machine though? Going to GP Monday, then back in QMC Tuesday - got a new growth. Tsk! Cheers all.
