Must be the same on all message boards . The majority can't be bothered or have something else better to do !

As I mentioned a few weeks ago , our local town here in Cornwall launched a nostalgia facebook page concentrating on old buildings, schools, shops etc and general history of the town . Todays subjects have included underground tunnels to the local church and missing buried gold crosses and ghosts in a manor house , which sounds the same sort of topics that would be relished here .

It was started by a young lady , a few weeks ago in March and now incredibly has just topped 5500 members , which is over 25% of the local population ! She soon deletes any insulting or political posts .

However I now notice that most of the posters tend to be the same people , probably a core 50 or so , so well over 5000 lurkers ! Slightly different format as I guess on Nottstalgia you have to consciously surf to the webpage , whereas on a facebook feed the topics are there on your newsfeed as long as you read that .

It's nice to have almost 4,000 members, but unfortunately they are considerably outnumbered by the lurkers, who watch but don't speak.

One forum I'm a member of has over 58,000 members there are many reasons while people join some are one visit(try it on)spammers.

Yes I too am a member of an RV travel group here in Oz, the board owners brag about having over 14,000 members but as DavidW says we only have around 40-50 regular posters ! some join and never post.

Cannot see the point myself unless its a closed forum and some info of sorts is only available if joined, but not really inthe spirit of it all IMO.

Been mentioned before, but take a look at the Nottstalgia list of members (at the top of any page). And then look at how many people have found the site, registered, given themselves a user-name,................and then never posted anything at all; it must be at least half of all registrations.

I always reckon late-night alcohol is responsible for many of those. It seemed like a good idea when they came back from the pub; but when they woke up the next day they'd forgotten they ever did anything the day before..

My time is now limited by SWMBO being at home full time, she having retired. However, I do try and pop in as frequently as I am able in order to catch up and post. Would that many of the others could manage to do the same.

It is fantasatic to have a couple of youngsters as active members of the group and I sincerely hope that they continue to post. Not only does this help bridge generation gaps but also enables the youngsters to get a perspective on the recent history of their city and environs, as seen by those who lived through those times and not (unavoidably) biased views of history books and TV.

yes perhaps its a shame that more members do not post or only ost for a short time but if they did perhaps would ould not have built up the relationships we have, this way you get more chance to asses what people are like

#11,

Those early days seem so long ago, but are never far from my thoughts.

Take this morning at around 10am, sitting by the Canal ( I do seem to spend a lot of my time by the Canal these days) eating my Salmon Sarnies and flask coffee.

Looking across the fields and generally reminiscing, My husband knows when I am doing that, because he says that I get a gormless expression on my face. Anyway moving on...I was admiring the beautiful view, but I was not where we were in reality, In my mind I was up Greenies fields back at Gedling on my way up the woods with my little gang. It doesn't matter where I am, I do find my thoughts drifting off the my childhood. I had a happy childhood, not much money, but we had the freedom to wander the fields and other places in Gedling. Not a day goes by without some thing or some sight takes me back in time.

You were the other side of the hill to me Carni. I lived in Arnold in the 50s and 60s. On a couple of occasions I walked through Mapperley (We called it Gedling) tunnel and emerged on the Gedling side of the hill. It was like being in a different land to us when only ten or eleven years old.

I was a lurker for quite a while, then one day when I was reading a post about Trent Bridge school I put a comment about getting the cane off Mr Marciniak (or Maniac as we called him) & that was that, I talk about any old rubbish now.. :)

Compo # 19, my goodness, you were a brave little lad, walking through that tunnel. My mates and I would only dare go about 20 yards in, it was scary and damp. There were so many great and natural playgrounds for us kids in the 50s and 60s, so many lovely open spaces to play without our parents freaking out if we were home a little late.

It's nice to have different opinions and views on things. Everyone is from different backgrounds and different experiences of life. Everyone's opinion is valuable but keeping the concept of free speech is priceless. As for those who don't post much. If 50 people gathered in a room for a social meeting like a party, there would be those who chat away and mix with everyone, those who keep to their closer friends, those who just smile and agree and those who just like to listen in. Some of us can be very shy and struggle to mix. Others are more outgoing. Believe it or not, despite the fact that I am a prolific poster, I am very shy and lacking in confidence. I don't think I could ever stand on stage and perform on my own, although I did once dabble in AmDram. I always stuck with the chorus at the back.

But back to members. Some of us socialise and others like to glean information maybe for research. Others just like to read what others have to say.

I can see your point. One of the plus benefits of the internet is its anonymity. If you are a shy type, or don't like being in the spotlight, or get embarrassed talking to people in public, you can escape to your keyboard. You 'speak' to a large number of people without having to face them in person; you aren't going to turn red and start stuttering if you just post a message on a forum. The internet has probably helped shy people to come out of their shells a bit and have some form of contact with others.

Somebody who wasn't much of a social animal in the past might start posting on a forum, and end up going to a pub and meeting some of the people they have been 'talking' to. They wouldn't have got that far if it hadn't been for the internet.
