Blacks Head Boy 7
Hi All. Since joining this brilliant site I have enjoyed reading many of your posts and stories about the great place that is Nottingham. As you may know I used to live in the Blacks Head during the late 70s and early eighties. I would be interested to hear any memories that you have of going in there for a drink. Was it a regular pub you used? Do you have any special occasions you might have celebrated in there. My late grandparents George and Dorothy were the licencees from 1967 to 1982. If anyone has old pictures to share of the darts and football teams that would be great. Unfortunately I only have 1 picture of the old sign on my FB account, nothing else can be found within the remaining family, so anything would be welcome. Many thanks in advance for any contributions
DavidA 153
A good pub this. I was in last week. Good range of beers, 2 seperate rooms with comfortable seating.
NewBasfordlad 3,599
Spent many a happy hour in there in the 70s. The TA centre was/is at the back so was a easy walk down the steps to the pub.

denshaw 2,872
Is it still called Blacks Head?
catfan 14,793
Is it still called Blacks Head? I would be very surprised in these PC days. But it still retains the name, however, now a black horse's head instead of the other. https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@52.967307,-1.086659,3a,75y,331.5h,91.68t/data=!3m4!1e1!3m2!1sx4qn1w8YSFOjfvqI9SY_cA!2e0?hl=en
Cliff Ton 10,467
I'm surprised but at least up till July 2012 it was still called that. https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@52.967271,-1.086872,3a,75y,87.73t/data=!3m4!1e1!3m2!1s6VXIf_g1d9MZdxTF1Cotfw!2e0?hl=en
Blacks Head Boy 7
I can remember Kenny Bates. Is he the father of Mick and Andrew Bates who were both schoolmates mine?
piggy and babs 544
THINK KENNY STILL PLAYS DARTS FOR THEM OR AT LEAST STILL GOES IN ON DARTS NIGHTS AS MY SISTER PLAYS FOR AN ARNOLD TEAM AND OFTEN SEZ SHE HAS SEEN HIM WHEN THEY PLAY BLACKS HEAD.
piggy and babs 544
WE HAVE KNOWN THE BATES FAMILY FROM BEING KIDS.
FrankWheldon79 2
Hi I am a Carlton lad, I also have known the Bates since I was a kid - they used to lives 3 or 4 doors down from me on Coningswath Road. Mick and Andy and Trev (Trev died in a car crash with Wayne Marriot). A question: I remember the Blacks Head sign being a person. Was it a man or woman? Has anyone got a picture of it? thanks

Cliff Ton 10,467
No problem with posting something like that. Nottstalgia is about Nottingham and memories connected with it, so I reckon your photo will definitely fall into that category.
Blacks Head Boy 7
Ok thanks. I have the picture saved on my phone which is the device I use to be on this site. Not sure how to put the picture on a post though. Anyone help with that?

TBI 2,351
Seem to remember the sign was a bloke in a turban.
Rob.L 1,090
It was indeed, and as I recall at least into the 1970s, it was actually the Blackamoor's Head. Politically incorrect now, but named when things were different.
benjamin1945 16,160
Had an Uncle lived on Carlton hill in the 50s,and he used to take me on Fishing matches, and the pick up point was the 'Blackamoor'........he did'nt take me often, because they had to keep stopping the Bus.............for me to be Sick,i still remember all the old Anglers moaning. PeverilPeril 3,283
I lived on Park Rd about 100 yards away 1955/62 so that was my local. The blacks Head / Blackamoors Head was the first pub that my dad ever went into by himself. He was in his 50's and it was the day before giving my sister away.
crankypig 457
They used to sell blackamoors stout,it was beautiful stuff, anyone remember it ?I think it had a little picture of an Indian man in a turban on the bottle.
TBI 2,351
Yes, crankypig. Blackamoor was made by Kimberley Brewery. Living close by for a while, I was a great fan of Kimberley ales. Not that stout though, sorry.
