BilboroughShirley 1,120
Thanks. I will watch the programme on line. When we replaced our phones our son set up a call minder system that is brilliant. If a call comes in from an unrecognised number they are asked for their name and you press 1 to accept it. We save friends and business numbers so they come straight through. Since we have had this there have been no nuisance calls and we have saved money as we no longer need BT choose to refuse service. We are ex-directory and I have ticked the box on the electoral roll that says we are not in the public version. The only thing I need to get stopped now is all the unsolicited mail trying to sell us Virgin Media broadband. If they stopped all of that then perhaps they could reduce the charges to their customers by saving on advertising!
Dave 48 847
If you don't recognise the number ignore it, then google it and you will find out from other people who have had a call from that number who it is, then block it.
Michael Booth 7,364
BilboroughShirley, I get about 4 letters a week from Virgin Media. Some of them come in A4 size but whatever the size of the envelope they all go in the bin unopened.
DaveN 1,118
I've started to send junk mail back hoping they'll have to pay the return postage. I just cross out my name/address - put RTS on the envelope and pop it in the postbox.
nonnaB 4,900
We get. ( used to get ) calls from electricy companies to vodafone. Now we recognise the numbers and refuse the calls. Vodafone is the company we use for house and mobile phones and they used to ring us to ask what we pay etc. Didnt occur to them to look whos who. Then telecom italia rings , same thing. "No thanks we are happy with what we have. But why when we are cheaper and we include etc" we replied "we pay ........includes free calls to mobile nos, to europe and north america etc." the reply "oh" and they still ring but vodafone station has a refuse button. So that gets pressed everytime.
FLY2 10,109
I never answer our landline, because it's never for me anyway !!!
FLY2 10,109
At the end of the day, there's a simple solution. If you've got a display and you don't recognise the number, then ignore it. If it's important, they'll leave a message. It's not that difficult surely !!!!!
Commo 1,292
We only use the landline which doesn't have a display, but signed up for the preference call system years ago and never get any nuisance calls, although I hope by telling this I don't bring up the commentators curse! barclaycon 569
Unfortunately nobody is immune from nuisance calls. The unscrupulous bastards can even just go through telephone numbers numerically. It doesn't matter if they are active or not. They use machines which can make thousands of calls at the same time. They'll phone anyone, they don't care. What really annoys me is when the police and local government pass your number onto survey companies. Because they're so desperate to get figures to show your satisfaction with their service, they'll pass your home number onto these scumbags who will then call you to phone to ask if you were happy with the outcome and, by the way, which party are you likely to be voting for, and what kind of products are you interested in, and would you like to take part in a survey on home insurance.......... The programme on Ch. 4 didn't really tell us much that we didn't know already. It confirmed that the centres that specialise in this sort of thing don't give a toss whether you've told them not to call or not and they don't bother about the law because it's very unlikely that they'll ever get punished. I think that cold calling (and SPAM for that matter) is becoming so intrusive that there needs to be a dedicated regulator who will follow up and even trace the source of these things. Especially those tossers in India and Pakistan who are making people's lives a misery.
FLY2 10,109
We were in London last week, and kept getting calls from local tw4ts. 020 numbers. How the hell did anyone know we were in London. I can only assume the provider notified certain parties. Barstewards !
