carni 10,094
Could well be just that? I had a little look and on the opening page, if you scroll down you will find them on the A-Z list of Hymns. Or are you having me on?
ValuerJim 277
No Carni. If it's not in the top 50 it's nowhere.

Guest
Jim started a great topic here, because it actually got me thinking and remembering mass at the Cathedral and school assembly. The Lord is My Shepherd has I suppose been with me all these years without Really thinking about it...though for me St.Anthony takes on that roll- an ideal patron for the likes of me!! IAN FINN 817
We used to sing Morning Has Broken in school it was my favorite then later heard it on the radio sung by Cat Stevens i think.
Deepdene Boy 642
Not strictly a hymn, but Jerusalem takes some beating
philmayfield 6,203
"Jerusalem". The answer to every question the hymn asks is 'no'!
Jill Sparrow 10,325
Do you make your own jam as well?
Oztalgian 3,332
Having had religion stuffed down my throat every morning for 10+ years via school morning assembly probably helped lead me to the beliefs I hold today, that and the logical application of science and common sense. Â That said, some of the songs sung still stick in my mind were mostly those that were sung at Harvest Festival time such as :- We Plow the Fields and Scatter and Come Ye Thankful People Come

Maybe since the piano was sold!
BilboroughShirley 1,120
A musician friend who is often asked to play for funerals at the crematorium told us that some hymn choices are a little surprising. He has often been asked to play "colours of day". The refrain is: "Light up the fire, let the flame burn .....".! One hell of a choice!
ValuerJim 277
At the last funeral I attended they played Ed Sheeran's Supermarket Flowers. Not a dry eye in the house.

I never knew that Ed Sheeran did stuff like that, I shall look at his music in a new light.
catfan 14,793
At my brother's funeral it was Johnny Cash ring of fire & Charriots of fire. Not my cup of tea for a solemn occasion.
philmayfield 6,203
‘My Way’ is very popular as well. Most funerals I attend these days are secular. I’ve no objection to that as I’m not religious but I think that the dignity is lost when ‘pop music’ is played.
Beekay 5,196
At our dearest friend's funeral , they played "I'll be seeing you, in all the old familiar places". He used to live off Thackerays lane, Woodthorpe. His wife still lives there
philmayfield 6,203
I used to live off Thackeray’s Lane on Park Road until 1962.
Beekay 5,196
I think we've had this discussion before Phil. Do you know the big house on the corner of Park rd. and Thackerays lane? He used to live there. I once did a painting of that place, from across the other side of the road.
philmayfield 6,203
I thought the one on the left was the vicarage or whatever the RC's call it.
Beekay 5,196
It had a Thackerays lane door number, I think it's no.5. Our friends who lived there wanted to downsize, so they had a bungalow built in the back garden, but kept the garage which is just round the corner going onto Park rd. When building was finished, there was still loads of room for both homes to have decent size gardens. I may be wrong but, I believe the 'vicarage' is at the back of the church. Edit... Just had a look on Mr.Googles map and it looks like the vicarage is in between the church and the house on the corner. B.
philmayfield 6,203
That's right BK. Just checked myself. I remember the Fathers at the vicarage used to have young girls from Ireland come to ‘do’ for them. When they fell pregnant they were sent back home!
Rob.L 1,090
My wife’s friend, Zyta, owns that house now.
Beekay 5,196
Which house Rob? The vicarage or no.5?
mary1947 2,090
one of my favourite hymns when i was younger was "Onward Christian Soldiers"  When it was my dads funeral and because he used to be a pub singer has our friends/family went into church we gave them each a white handkerchief  what is this for they ask?    "just wait and see." was my reply So when the song Goodbye, Goodbye, I wish you all the luck Goodbye, was played we told in fact no-one needed telling they all stood up and waved their handkerchief. What a lovely end for a pub singer.
