DAVIDW 1,690
Showing my age but according to something I just read , Crossroads had its first showing on this day in 1964. Nearly 60 years ago. Can't say if I watched the first episode or not but I bet there's a few here who still remember some of the names : Meg Richardson, Miss Diane, Bennie etc ! Jill Sparrow 10,316
Cardboard scenery that moved every time anyone coughed! Amy Turtle who could never remember her lines. It was usually on at tea time but I wasn't an avid watcher.
katyjay 5,091
Used to watch it, but it was my first taste of the Brummie accent and have disliked it since! Now there's a Brummie on the baking show!
Jill Sparrow 10,316
I think @benjamin1945had far more interesting storylines in the Brum area
philmayfield 6,187
We had a woman in the village with a strong Brummie accent. We used to call her ‘Marlene’ after the Beryl Reed character with the large earrings!
Cliff Ton 10,479
The main thing I remember about it is the theme tune; instantly recognisable to people of a certain age. It's stood the test of time, even if the programme hasn't.
trogg 2,020
My son was promoted and transferred to Birmingham, he was pleased but the only downside to the move was that his 2 toddlers would grow up with that accent.

And to make it on topic what with the release of the "new" Beatles single today , Macca once did a cover version
IAN FINN 817
Got home from work and Crossroads was just starting my mum always watched it.
LizzieM 9,514
I remember Crossroads for its missed cues and wonky scenery and loved Victoria Wood’s ‘Acorn Antiques’ which just took the pee out of Crossroads. She was brilliant and so observant.
nonnaB 4,900
Didn’t watch it because at that time I was still at work or else traveling home. I remember though my bosses mother had it on the tv and I could hear the signature tune.
nonnaB 4,900
British accents. I don’t think you ever lose them. There are so many provinces here that have awful accents and dialects. Tuscany is one I love as is also Sicilian but that’s a language all of its own. My family take the mickey when I say “ mi “ instead of “me” which I do occasionally. woody 555
Incredible how so many people can have the same speech impediment.
DJ360 6,733
Amy Turtle?
katyjay 5,091
DJ, I thimk her accent was the thickest. Meg's son Sandy was in a wheelchair later on, wasn't he genuinely using it through illness?
Cliff Ton 10,479
Yes; art imitating reality. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roger_Tonge
Beekay 5,182
It was said that Crossroads motel could solve the unemployment problem in one fell swoop ! Everybody that turned up there was suddenly offered a job and bed and board to go with it.
