philmayfield 6,240
There's a lot about it way back on this site. It was ultimately banned because it was made from unpasteurised milk.
Jill Sparrow 10,386
Are there any recorded figures of fatalities due to eating unpasteurized Colwick Cheese? I survived it and don't know of anyone who didn't. Why can't people leave things alone?

annswabey 599
Having worked in France for a while and had lots of holidays there over the last 30+ years, I developed a liking for goats cheese. When I gave some to my Mum, she thought it was just like Colwick cheese. Goats cheese in France is often unpasteurised, and haven't noticed huge numbers of deaths from eating it

Jill Sparrow 10,386
There isn't one, Oz. It was unique.
philmayfield 6,240
Unless you enjoy the disgusting taste of milk that’s gone off I wouldn’t bother looking for a substitute Oz!
Oztalgian 3,371
Yuk! I'll give it a miss if I can ever get over there risk free.
jonab 1,644
I quite enjoyed Colwick cheese. I don't agree it had a "gone off milk" flavour - it had a nice acidity and was very good on a sandwich with cucumber and pepper. There was a cheese that showed some resemblance to Colwick cheese called St Ivel Lactic Cheese. Not quite the same stuff but it had this same acidic character. I doubt it is available now. A number of the French fresh goats cheeses (Chèvre) are similar to Colwick cheese but I doubt they would travel very well away from their area of manufacture. I did try once making my own lactic cheese by mixing lactic acid with milk and collecting and pressing the curds. It was quite nice but not the same as the real thing. philmayfield 6,240
I bought a cheese back from France once. It stunk out the aeroplane but nobody could trace it to me. I was made to bury it in the garden! 1

Jill Sparrow 10,386
I noticed in the Nottingham obits an obituary for Brian John Barnsdall who was formerly the owner of The Richmond Dairy in Mapperley. They made the famous Colwick Cream Cheese so much loved in our household when I was a child.
philmayfield 6,240
I often used to drive past his creamery and see lots of old socks filled with the maturing cheese, hung out on his washing line.

philmayfield 6,240
You can. Just pour some sour milk into an old sock and hang on the clothes line for a month. The taste of yesteryear!

Beekay 5,234
When 'er indoors was pregnant with our first, back 66/67 I was the one with cravings and it was Colwick cheese ! Couldn't get enough of it.
philmayfield 6,240
I'm a lover of cheese. I can drool over the extensive cheese counters at the local farm shops. I just don't think that Colwick is a 'proper' cheese. To me it just tastes like milk that has gone off. It turns my stomach just thinking about it.
MargieH 7,617
Phil, sounds a bit disgusting .... your drooling over the cheese counter!
