  1. And I'd forgotten it's just visible on Britain from Above. Zooming in on that view, you get this.
  2. albertsmith.........I've been digging around on the Britain from Above site, and I think I've found what you were looking for. A wider shot, with London Road on the right And a closer view
  3. This might answer a few questions - from the 1920s. The site of Walsall Conduits seems to have been a laundry. This is from the 1950s, probably closer to your era ! Apologies for the lousy resolution, due to the Old Maps site being non-user-friendly these days. The Walsall Conduits site is a black blob here, but looking at the original I can tell you it says Nottingham & District Technical College, Wilford Bridge xxxx .........And to the left and below of the main building it says Laundry and Dye Works
  4. Yes, quite a few people do. http://nottstalgia.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=2835&hl=slipper
  5. My take on it. Many people seem to think the past was always better than the present. People tend to remember the good things which happened, and your mind conveniently forgets the bad things which happened - unless you really concentrate. If you could actually go back in time and re-live the past, I think you'd be amazed at all the unpleasant and unhappy and boring things you'd forgotten; because the past was always perfect...wasn't it?
  6. Still there, but currently surrounded by tram works. And there are a few references and repeats on the subject in this thread http://nottstalgia.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=5022&page=3 from #44 onwards
  7. You know how you see those lorries driving around everywhere looking for scrap metal...............
  8. Not only has the clock disappeared, but the escalator next to it has gone as well - to be replaced by a new one. The circle on the floor is where the clock used to be.
  9. Look on the side of many vans and lorries these days. Whatever business they are connected with, they all have Solutions in their name. Transport Solutions; Storage Solutions; Marketing Solutions; Business Solutions; Financial Solutions; Advertising Solutions etc.
  10. You're right ! I was in that area this morning and realised I'd highlighted the wrong block. This is the correct one. I saw them from the back on Huntingdon Street, and I was probably driving past when you took your photos earlier today.
  11. I don't think I'd want to live there, even if I could afford it. It looks as though when they were built, they didn't have back gardens going through to Huntingdon Street; instead there were more, smaller houses. This is the1899 OS.
  12. Is it these places? https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@52.961122,-1.150515,3a,90y,34.18h,92.04t/data=!3m4!1e1!3m2!1ssolYaUcJjVBwuwoRwXZ6BQ!2e0?hl=en I think they count as city centre, but I also think they are all offices and business premises and not real houses for real people (although that's obviously how they started life)
  13. Photo Opportunities are obviously the big thing today; the Evening Post have also done one by showing 10 photos from the 1960s, some of which I hadn't seen before. http://www.nottinghampost.com/pictures/best-pictures-1960s-Nottingham/pictures-20966646-detail/pictures.html#1
  14. Don't they look like they've been to an audition for a new version of the Village People?
  15. Done. Now there's absolutely no excuse for not knowing about it.
  16. Is that the same as this http://nottstalgia.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=12299
  17. Shop assistants (or people in a similar position) who finish the transaction with "Enjoy".
  18. Here's a great example of how statistics can be used to demonstrate both sides of an argument at once. Seems there are more people smoking now than ever before, but that is partly explained by population growth. In some parts of the world smoking is a growth industry, but in other places its falling. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-25635121
  19. You're right, I'd forgotten that ! So part of my first post can be ignored. Just look at the photos and imagine what it's like living with a view of a car park.
  20. You can now live in the old, big Co-op. Part of it has been converted into apartments and they've just started to come on the market. The exterior photo shows the building from the Wollaton Street side. http://www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-43926895.html I bet everyone here is wondering whether the art deco staircase has been retained.
  21. This is the story so far http://www.nottinghampost.com/Imperial-Tobacco-cut-540-jobs-close-Beeston/story-20959895-detail/story.html
  22. As was mentioned in another thread...... Do Not Feed the Trolls They only do it to wind people up, so just ignore them.
  23. At the last meet-up, a mention was made of the Belvedere Club on Pilcher Gate. I'm too young to know about such things, but it's been mentioned earlier in this thread. Apparently it was a few doors up from the Windmill pub, which is the white building on the extreme right here, looking up Pilcher Gate. So presumably the Belvedere is one of the other buildings in the photo. And this is what it looks like today.
  24. A few years ago there was this "do-you-believe-it-or-was-it-an-excuse-to-back-out" story http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1058890/We-like-family-The-Others-says-millionaire-fled-haunted-3-6m-mansion.html
