  1. Don't know why they chose Newark but also known as the Three Counties who were formed 1925/6.
  2. As mary1947 said it was the Milton's Head , a Home Brewery pub in the Victoria Centre , it had frontage to Parliament St and an entrance from upstairs within the Centre apparently. The original Milton's Head stood on the corner of what became the new entrance to the Vic Centre. Further down Parliament St but still within the confines of Vic Centre was the Prince Albert , an Ansells pub , later Butlers ,later Levers Invention, later Havana Bar ? (May not have been in that order). I vaguely remember them being there but left Notts in 1981 (Info from some Facebook pages). R
  3. Looks like the Napier Inn on Union Road and also the New Inn ceased trading 1971 when a license was issued for premises within the Vic Centre. This from the E.P. March 30th 1971 : "Removal of a justices license for retail intoxicating liquor of all descriptions on premises situate at Union Road in the City of Nottingham known by the sign of the "NEW INN" and of which premises the Home Brewery Company Limited of Daybrook is the owner from such premises to certain premises intended to be erected in the Nottingham Victoria Development Centre .....of which premises the
  4. Makes you wonder what Russian citizens are fed about the Western world . My daughter in law , in the Netherlands , is an administrator in the Dutch office of a multi-national software company. They had an office in Moscow but because of the invasion it was closed down but the company offered jobs to staff who could relocate out of Russia. Three women and their families decided to relocate to Holland and it seems to have fallen on my daughter in law to find accommodation for them . One of the other Dutch office workers happened to have a vacant property
  5. I was listening on Talksport on edge ! Would have been even more unbelievable if Johnson's last minute punt into an open goal from 30 yards had gone in .......especially with them only having 25% of possession .
  6. This confused me this morning , a link to a story of a pub called the Foresters Inn on Huntingdon St , a former "LGBT" pub , being demolished for flats. This one fronts St Mark's St . Had to resort to Streetview to make sure it was a different pub. https://www.nottinghampost.com/news/nottingham-news/plan-knock-down-former-nottingham-7733483.amp So there were two pubs with "Foresters" in the title near to each other and both were LGBT pubs ?
  7. This is another version of She Moved Thro' The Fair by Gloria Furey that I have on a budget compilation CD of Irish folk songs . The use of the drones in the background make this a particularly haunting version .
  8. I saw that pic on Facebook yesterday and could date it to March 1934 (not 1944 as posted), judging by the movies being advertised on the hoardings .
  9. There's a home movie of the 1959 Goose Fair on the BFI site . I reckon I would have been there , taken by my mum , for the opening ceremony . At junior school we used to get a day off to go , as far as I remember . It does bring back memories and the scenes towards the end of the film of the sideshows , with dancing girls and the weird displays like "Kap-Dwa the 12 foot , two-headed Paraguayan Giant" are definitely of their time . https://player.bfi.org.uk/free/film/watch-nottingham-goose-fair-october-1959-1959-online Incidentally someone must have made some m
  10. My wife searched through her many old handbags to see if she had any of the old paper £20 notes left . (She is superstitious and believes you should always have some cash in your bag ). She found £100 in old notes after searching through numerous bags and as it's the last day you can use them in shop transactions , thought I would go to the bank to change old for new . I needed to go to the bank anyway . I said to the lady cashier "Expect you've been busy today with people exchanging old money" She said "yes this is nothing (our £100) , people have been bringing th
  11. Mary1947 I'm baffled by your comments and what I have said that irks you . The only reason I put the post up was to show one of those ladies featured , 50 years on. I did live near St Ann's, my wifes family had a grocers on St Anns Well Rd , her grandfather had a chip shop there too . All fine people . My grandparents had a similar terraced house in Carlton , didn't have 2 farthings to rub together but their house and their neighbours were immaculate inside.
  12. The same chap has also posted the same coloured 1902 journey alongside a comparable modern day journey. Looks like that's filmed whilst on an electric scooter. Because of the Broadmarsh demolition the route goes a bit askew through the new corridor but some old buildings can still be seen.
  13. Sorry didn't realise the original link didnt work . I was looking at it on the BFI site but it's the same film as is on the youtube that Stuart.C posted above without the intro . https://player.bfi.org.uk/free/film/watch-st-anns-1969-online
  14. Just watched the St Ann's 1969 documentary again , mainly featuring 2 families living in poor conditions . I know it was political to justify demolition of the area but was struck by the honesty of one of the mums describing their situation. In the documentary Kath Churchill was describing how hard it was to get by, not having much money. When searching to see if it had been discussed on here , a link came up to Kath , 50 years on now living Edwalton . She had split from her partner Geoff who appeared in the film in 1974. https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.nottingh
  15. We had ours on Wednesday and the nurse asked us if we wanted the flu jab too . We said yes but Thursday I woke up feeling lousy . Slept a lot of the day , didn't seem to affect my wife though ! By Friday I was fine .
  16. Ah yes I've just re-read my piece and it says the burial ground at Mount Street disappeared in 1937 when a new road was built .
  17. I compiled an extensive piece on George Vason , "Nottingham's Robinson Crusoe" , a couple of years ago after seeing a mention of his gravestone in the hidden Mount St burial yard . https://djwilson22.wordpress.com/2020/10/02/george-vason-of-nottingham-c1773-1838-and-his-south-seas-adventures/
  18. I agree about the music . I don't know what the organ music was as they were leaving the first service but it sounded like a child messing about , just pressing random keys .
  19. You would think you would be able to see some of the family on the 1939 Register but so far drawn a blank. Can see a marriage in Nottingham in 1923 for an Arthur Newton to a Gertrude Newton ( cousins ?) Can see births of what could be those children above : Gertrude Naomi 1926 Arthur 1928 Joan 1931 Betty 1932 George W 1932 Stumped after that !
  20. There's still some odd team selection mysteries . O'Brian who had been the standout player in earlier games was on the bench . My son watched the match via some Saudi tv station and said as soon as O'Brian came on as a sub, there was an immediate improvement in the team performance . The only player who has scored goals in the Prem before, I.e. Dennis , only on for 5 mins in the last two games , with little chance of even getting a kick . Of course we don't know what goes on in the dressing room or on the training pitches , maybe Cooper has his reasons ?
  21. Computer says "NO". After 6 games , super computer predicts a less than 1% chance of winning league ! .....oh and also finishing bottom . Be interesting to see how it pans out ! https://projects.fivethirtyeight.com/soccer-predictions/premier-league/

    The Queen

True but in a 100 years in the future we may be called that ?

    The Queen

With Charles becoming King I would have thought we ,as a nation , would have gone from being (modern) Elizabethans to Charlesians ? I'm still not sure but others have said that apparently , this era will be known as Carolean , (the older term being Carolingian) ??
  24. Unfortunately the tactics seem to be echoes of Houghton . Get a couple of goals then sit back and put on extra backs or midfielders , instead of increasing the firepower and keeping the opposition pinned in their own half . Why didn't he use Dennis ? Maybe he is too loyal to the championship players that got us up that can't quite cut it in the Prem.
  25. I agree Forest need a "goal poacher" . Watched the highlights on M.O.D. last night and surprised Surridge wasnt brought on sooner . Worrying thing is they seem to be signing yet another midfielder and another centre back and don't seem to be addressing the goal scoring problem but got to have faith in Cooper .
