  1. I am getting used to the new format. One thing that surprises me is the number of guests online. On the old version there was the list of who was online and how many members visited at the bottom of the forums list. With the new format there seem to be more guests than members. Are less members logging in and are there more guests? It is interesting to see what the guests are looking at. One other observation (not a complaint) is that the new version seems slower to load. Sorting all the problems has taken people a lot of time and hard work. I am so pleased the site is up and r
  2. I remember Mr Bland. For A-level biology we had two teachers, him and Mr Chollerton. Mr Bland did the plant physiology part and he spent too much time dictating notes from his file. After the first couple of weeks I asked him "when we get to the end of your file have we finished?". He was not impressed but he did say yes. Mr Chollerton was great. He did all the good stuff about DNA. He inspired me and made me want to study biological science for my degree.
  3. #51 Excellent. Thanks DaveN. This sounds more interesting than the One Show.
  4. #224 Merthyr Imp: great photo. Capochi's snack bar is there. I am sure that they also had a snack bar on Chapel Bar, just around the corner from the cinema. I remember a very snowy winter day in 1968 when I set out from Coventry to Nottingham at lunch time on a Friday. I caught a double decker bus from Coventry to Leicester. It took hours as they had to push cars over Ansty bridge one at a time! The bus made it OK. We got to Leicester and eventually a Barton's bus arrived to take us to Nottingham. By then it was dark. I sat on the front seat and it was quite exciting as the brilli
  5. Great photos Cliff Ton. When we moved into our second house the kitchen units were like those. When we changed the kitchen we gave them to the local Scout group for the kitchen in the scout hut. We update and replace decor and furnishings but retaining the nice things we like. I will not be dictated to by fashion changes in interior design! Today I was looking around a furnishing store and so many items are artistic but sterile. They would be no substitute for the ones we have, the gifts from friends and family, heirlooms and reminders of special events. Our white and pale pastel walls
  6. #26 Great photos Catfan. I guess they will all be a bit "steamed up" when they have climbed Steep Hill in the costumes! The event looks like lots of fun.
  7. #30 Chief Inspector Dorcas Rumble-Child. A good thing I love detective stories and puzzles!
  8. Take good care of yourself Dave and get well soon. Best wishes.
  9. Just discovered that the quote box can be deleted so I edited it out. This is a learning curve! Never had these problems before.
  10. I have just learned something by accident! I clicked on the date of the post in unread contact and it gave me the last post in the thread. Since the changes I had been clicking on the title of the thread then having to load the last page! One little problem. I just put a post on Bilborough Grammar School and somehow ended up with a blank quote box in there that I cannot get rid of. Any ideas?
  11. I agree firbeck, Mr Bristow was a good guy. He taught the group I was in for A level physics. He stayed very calm when my friend and I filled the downstairs physics lab with smoke. We had to set up 6 lead accumulators to power the experiment. We were talking and did not notice that we had connected them in series! Mr Yarnell said I would never pass the exam. Mr Bristow was good and I passed.
  12. I was on holiday with my parents in Edinburgh and we had a great time. We were staying with a friend of my dad's and his wife introduced me to the delights of vodka and orange. I did not see the match on TV as I do not like football. I knew the score by the cheers that came from the lounge. My dad's friend was a prison officer and was not happy because all their shifts had been changed so the prisoners could watch the match.
  13. I have just got back from a great holiday and logged in to see what has been happening! This big change was a shock. Exploring the features is a bit of fun but I miss the old version with the new threads and recently posted threads at the top of the home page. I looked into my profile and all my notifications have gone! All the lovely photos are still on member's posts and the members are more important than the design of the screen.
  14. I was christened at the Church in Yorkshire where my parents were married. I went to Methodist Sunday School and this was my own choice at the age of about 6. My friends went and so on Sunday afternoon I went with them. I made more friends at Kingswood Methodist Sunday School. It was interesting and friendly. The Bible stories were put over well and a group of us did something called the Scripture Exam. Also groups of us used to go and visit elderly people in the community, doing little jobs for them and sitting and listening to them. A friend and I used to visit a disabled lady who had
  15. Too often people are labelled according to their age, or perceived age. This is not good. It is the person that matters. The date on a birth certificate is for administration, it is the great person that counts, whatever their age. We should just enjoy every day of every year. Not long ago I registered to use a catch-up service for a TV channel. They asked for my date of birth. I was happy to give day and month, though they never sent me a card, but for the year I put 1900. Their computer accepted it! This raises questions about the validity checks on their data input! Anyway now the
  16. Mick2me you are doing a brilliant job. Big thanks for all your hard work and dedication. It is much appreciated.
  17. I love the fireworks scene in Lord of the Rings Fellowship of the Ring. It is the scene in the Shire where the Hobbits set off the fireworks in the tent and get more than they bargained for. The firework explodes in the form of a huge dragon and people run. Very funny, well acted and excellent special effects.
  18. DavidW and Cliff Ton: many thanks for this very useful information. This explains a lot and is a great help to me in more ways than one. I am much happier now!
  19. My recent family history research led me to read this thread. Very interesting. I have a question that may seem a bit strange and I hope that some of our members will have some ideas. In 1927 the remains of two people were dug up and removed from Basford cemetery and interred in a new family grave in the Rock Cemetery. I have searched online to see if there were any major roadworks or building works at Basford cemetery at that time requiring the removal of burials with transfers elsewhere and I can find no evidence of this. Does anyone know anything about the history of Basford cemetery?
  20. Thanks Cliff Ton. I have not been to Wollaton Park for years, not since they put the industrial museum there. Worth a trip.
  21. Catfan thank you so much for the brilliant slideshow. On the day you took the photos i walked along the canal from where Jury's Inn is to the Nottingham Archives and the later on I walked back to the tram. That was the first time I had been to Nottingham city centre for many years. I wish I had seen you! Your lovely photos have made my day and they remind me of the great time I had in Nottingham as I described on " How's your day",
  22. One school I worked in, where behaviour was quite challenging, the girls were not allowed to wear long dangling earrings because if they got into a fight their ear lobe would be ripped open when the other girl pulled at them. Uniform was not enforced very well. One day the deputy head was heard giving a major telling off about dangling earrings to a female person before he realised it was a visiting parent! We did have a laugh in the staff room. I could never have my ears pierced as I even find having injections difficult to handle.
  23. Our libraries, museums and archives are a valuable public facility and they must be protected. Access should be free to the public as they are a facility for lifelong learning, social interaction and pleasure. My dad introduced me to the Nottingham Central Library and I loved going there with him. He let me use his tickets for the adult library when I was still at primary school and looking for factual books. I loved going there with him.
  24. In Stratford on Avon there used to be a lovely and very interesting Teddy Bear museum. Sadly it closed. A shame as there was a lot of social history in there.
