  1. Hello, I have been speaking to a gentleman who is looking for information about Forster Street School in 1950s. His father was a teacher there and sadly passed in 1990. If anyone has any memories of this teacher or pictures which may be of interest to him, I am trying to put together some information to send to him. Many Thanks JD
  2. Thanks. CT, as always. This cutting and photo appeared in an old copy of Bygones. The Revd Ralph appears here in civvies plus clerical collar but minus his vestments. Presumably, the children are entering via the gate on the corner of Hartley Road/Churchfield Lane as I'm told it was the only entrance in the 1950s. David Worsdale tells me that it was rebuilt in 1952 in honour of the accession of Queen Elizabeth II but from what I can see in this photo, it doesn't look like the present entrance. There is now an entrance further down Churchfield Lane, built in the same style as the
  3. That would explain why I'd never heard of it. I lived towards the top of Denman Street. Furthest down I knew of properly was Norton street, although I made a fair few trips down to Andersons pawn shop on the corner of Forster Street in my time, also down to the paddling pool on St.Peters Street.
  4. I was born in Hague Terrace - older sister went to Forster Street School - Grandma lived on Croyden Road next door to Mrs Veesy's Corner Shop - all gone in the slum clearance ! Dont know the John and David Blakes.
  5. I've just read the book 'Radford' by Chris Richards and feel sure I'm in the Forster Street school photo taken in 1957 ( on the page facing the contents page if anyone has the book ) my sister says it isn't me but I think I recognise other kids in the picture. I'd appreciate anyone reading this to check and see if they are in the picture. I was born on Croydon Road in 1952 and lived there until getting married in 1973. Great memories of Radford in the hard days. Nine of us lived in a mid terraced house on Croydon Road, two beds and an attic, outside toilet and a yard where the tin bath an
  6. One of CT s photos shows precisely the junction of Hartley Road and Forster Street, with the textile factory on the corner. Taken in 1976, many years after I went there as a child...and no iron bollards!
  7. For anyone curious to know what the area in question looked like.......https://picturenottingham.co.uk/image-library.html?keywords=forster Including the school and the pawn shop.
  8. Thanks, Beekay. I remember pestering my poor mother about those bollards and demanding to know why they were there and what they were for! I doubt we went there for very long because after my cousin and her husband had a daughter, in 1961, the marriage hit the rocks and they split up. I do recall once going there to pick up a cerise cardigan with mother of pearl buttons my cousin had knitted for me. I recall being confused on that occasion because their house appeared to be on the wrong side of the street! In fact, we'd been to Garden Street first and called at my cousin's house on the
  9. Sorry Jill, I'm afraid I can't help with this one. When I were a nipper living off Denman Street, back in the 50s, I wouldn't have any reason to venture around that area. However, travelled down Denman Street to the paddling pool at the bottom, (St.Peters street) so often traversed Forster Street. In fact, I were a regular visitor to Andersons pawn shop on the corner of Forster/Denman streets. I was more familiar with the streets between Denman Street and Ilkeston Road, I had relatives down that side. But when we moved to Kennington Road, I no longer had a reason to visit that area.
  10. I was talking to a former primary school friend recently and he mentioned that, as a child, he visited family members who lived in Lonsdale Road, Radford. That reminded me of an older cousin of mine who married in 1960 and moved into a house in Forster Street which is the next street along, moving in the direction of Radford Boulevard. I was only two or three years old at the time but I well remember going to see my cousin and recall that there were iron bollards at the end of one, or perhaps both, of those streets at their junction with Hartley Road. Does anyone else, perhaps Beek
  11. I went there under the head mistress miss littlewood/headmaster Mr. Forster and my kids went there too under Frank Knowles...and my late Mrs went there as a parent supporter in fact the kids decorated the church at her funeral with colourful big paintings of letters of her name to go all around... She was that well liked... Bless her
  12. Welcome Jendaw. There are a number of old threads which mention Forster Street School. If you read through them you'll probably find a few posts which will be of interest. 13. Hello, Radford Boy, I wanted to ask you if you have any memories of Mr Laurence Hartley? He was a teacher in the 1950s at Forster Street School and I notice you mentioned you attended that school. He sadly passed away in 1990, but his son is researching his history and I would be very pleased to be able to pass on anything. Many Thanks Jen
  14. lived on dulwich road from 1952 till around 1968. went to forster st school and cottesmore, drank in old rose, the boulevard, albany hotel,

  15. I was at Forster Street School from 1953 to 1957. Anyone else have memories of this school?
  16. Hi All, You have probably seen all of the reports regarding the bushfires in Australia. Where I live on the Mid North Coast of NSW between Forster and Taree. Only 5 weeks ago we were almost evacuated because of fires near us.Driving down to Sydney 400ks south the temperature reached 47 degrees Now we have in 3 days had more than 20 inches of rain.Since spring I had not mowed our lawns once(normally twice a week) Now after the rain I have stuff growing everywhere and mowed twice in 4 days!!!! Our farmers are loving it,after the crippling drought they are once again"farming". Sad
  17. Hi All, Thanks for your postings.I still have images of my Dad riding his bike to work wrapped up against the cold, worked for Avro aviation in Nottingham. We had little money as was the case with many at that time. Things had to change for him and us after the war, Australia was the answer. It changed his whole life around, job with Qantas, able to buy a car, etc. Sadly he died aged 63, a result of smoking as many did during the war. Sydney was where I worked but now live on the Mid North Coast near Forster,a most beautiful place to be,lakes, beaches, unspoiled countryside, and great golf!!!. When
  18. Hi OZTALGIAN, I live on the Mid North Coast of NSW just out of Forster 4 hours by road to Sydney. We built here 2003 on a golf course estate, still playing golf but as we get older the game becomes a "mystery". Can you recall what year you new of Robin,I would imagine he would still live in the area, maybe listed in the local phone book. Regards Keith
  19. In addition to what AfferGorritt has just said, I'll add another possible suggestion. Maybe Gem was living on Forster Street (or the parallel stretch of Radford Boulevard) and saw the Boulevard Works, which looks as though it could be a Players factory, but actually wasn't.
  20. Used to play cu-can & chase the ace in the Boulevard with the lads from Zaff shopfitters on payday, when I lived on Forster Street, some left skint!
  21. I too was a member of RCTS and remember Vic Forster, who lived in Beeston. Used to go to his house to renew my membership. Went on one of their trips, I think to the Severn Valley Line. I went to that exhibition, and still have the book somewhere. Their Locomotives of the LNER was a superb series of books and graces my bookshelf.
  22. I do recall that day,we drove in my Dad's light 15 Citroen ( GTJ67). Vic Forster,Mick Shaw,John Proctor all the RCTS gang, loved the trips and film shows on North Church St.great that my old man involved me!
  23. In the book 'The Great Northern Railway in the East Midlands Vol.2' by Alfred Henshaw, published by the RCTS in 2000,there are two photos of Bulwell Forest station, plus one of a train on the embankment north of the station, and one of engines awaiting scrapping at Rigley's wagon works. There also some in the book 'Railways in and Around Nottingham' by V. Forster & W. Taylor, published by Foxline in 1991 - two more photos of Bulwell Forest station, one with a railtour train, and one of a goods train passing the signal box. There is also one of an engine next to Leen Valley junction signa
  24. Bilbraborn. I remember Mr Hill as he and my parents and aunty were friends. My aunty and uncle lived next door to us in Radford and they all used to chat on the doorstep. Mr Hill would come by on his bike when he'd finished at the railways. I went to Forster St and when they changed the name, was chosen to give flowers etc to Alderman and Mrs Hill. Having been told not to speak to them, Mr Hill greeted me and asked after my dad - I was mortified as I could see the head mistress's outraged look that I should know the Lord Mayor! But we were a staunch Labour family and trades unionists, so
