Does anyone remember Flints newsagents which was on Alfreton Road roughly opposite the Spread Eagle near Bentinck Road/Hartley Road junction. It was next door to Eric's shoe shop. It was run and owned by my wife’s grandparents and she lived there for the first few years of her life.

This was my local line when I was a kid, we used to meet up at the black path railway bridge at the back of Firbeck Estate and watch the trains go by, not that there were that many, even in the 50's and 60's. I've heard once again, that this line is being considered for closure, is this true, has anyone got any information on this, it's been talked about since the days of Beeching, but it always managed to survive. I took my son for a nottstalgic walk along the canal from Wollaton to the site of Trowell Moor Colliery the other day, which follows the line of the railway. I was very surprised

The cottages you refer to Vine Street, Gate Street & Leivers Street were built in 1874 to house miners at Wollaton Colliery.
Both my mothers parents were born on Gate Street in 1887,

Just going through family tree and came across the site and pictures. My grandfather emigrated alone to Australia around 1915, a coal miner born in Mansfield. I have family letters and postcards from his mother in Clapham road Radford, a sister in Aspley Gardens and photos before 1932. I have a lot of family tree, but nothing of younger generations, or stories of his folk back home. Any stories, memories, links would be greatly appreciated.

My mother was adopted, so I have very little information about her at all. I have plenty on my father's side but very little about my mother. There is a family tragedy connected to this adoption. By pure chance this weekend I saw my mother's birth certificate for about 30 seconds. I could not see much of it and could not really read the handwriting. This was my mother's birthplace. What I could see was something like " 16 Fairfield Street" This was in Nottingham, as the registry office was in Nottingham. I am a little vague about the address. I was going to post this in the Ancestry part of the forum but decided I was looking for more of a place than a person so didn't seem appropriate. I've been tracing my family history down and have found a few street names that I cannot locate on modern maps. Listed is an 8 DUKE STREET, Radford. I've viewed it on Google Maps - street view, but it mainly looks like factories there now and the few houses there are look far too modern to be the ones that my ancestors were living in in 1911. Is the big JP factory still operating near Clifton Bridge??? I commissioned the air conditioning fan motors during the construction of that place. It was years ahead of it's time, generated it's own electricity with six 0ne megawatt gas turbine driven alternators from natural north sea gas piped in via a four foot gas main.

Wondered if anyone could help me, my mum died a few years ago and as a child she grew up in a place called Radford House in the late 1930s and 40s. I have a fantastic oil painting that was left in her inhertence surrounded by hedges and fields. I believe the house was sold sometime in the 50s and became a car showroom by the name of Butterworth &Walker, it was eventually pulled down in 1959. What I'm trying to understand is where exactly was the house situated, I believe it was on Ilkeston Road but unsure where, my mothers maiden name was Hopewell as in the furniture people. Many thanks

Hello Listers I have a Death certificate of a lady ( I think is related to be confirmed) Ann RETCHFORD died in 28 May 1843, On the certificate This Lunatic Asylum was in the Registration District of RADFORD in the Sub district of Snenton. Thomas POWELL was the occupier of this place. Can anyone help out on any info that maybe available on her and the Asylum. Thank you ! Tony

Greetings all. A few pictures of the exterior of the baths from recent days below but the main reason I'm posting is the owner of the site - despite it being in a conservation area and the Mills being nearly 200 years old as well as hosting the first and oldest washhouses in Nottingham has applied to demolish the lot. Needless to say it's a private property development company. To have any chance of saving it objections need to be in (by email is acceptable) by May 31st, 2011. Before my time that was! My father was born July 1928 at No 2 Radford Bridge Road, Old Radford. The house was demolished by 1930 to make way for Raleigh Island and more so, the Crown Inn. The Crown was built where No 2 Radford Bridge Road stood. I wonder if anyone has a picture of the house, obviously before 1930, or even of the area. I would like to know what the house looked like. There are plenty of pictures on Picture the Pas,t of the Crown and that area being built but non earlier. I can remember while at Sidney Pearson Hill school in the 70s the filming of some scenes for an episode of Z Cars.I recall there was filming on Denman Street just below the corner with Dulwich Road and also around the entrance to the Sidney Pearson gates at the rear of the school. And I have just discovered that my biological grandma lived at 12 Leonard terrace at the same time.I am searching for a man called james Johnstone who was lodgeing at Leonard terrace in 1967 I believe he was from Coventry and was probably came here for work.
