FLY2 10,108
Unbelievable what goes through people's minds these days. There are definitely some sick souls that urgently need removing from society.
jonab 1,644
Before removal from society, they should be sent down the slides which they have vandalised preferably landing in vinegar (or something worse) at the bottom.
Brew 5,419
Now now lets show some sympathy and understanding for the poor misguided scum err sorry , young adults. We should acknowledge that as a society we have neglected their wants and needs. We must have meaningful dialogue to better understand how we have failed them and accept responsibility for that failure. We must form a committee to make a road map that ensures going forward we have the disturbed, the delusional and the disenfranchised fully engaged We must show empathy with their life and situation, we should also learn to see the humour in slicing a five year olds fingers off.... OK, can I nail their balls to a plank now...
philmayfield 6,139
That’s nothing new. I’ve seen it done to slides on Woodthorpe Park when I was a kid. Razor blades were used.
woody 552
The dogooders of this world have got a lot to answer for. Any offender these days is identified as having one syndrome or another to defend their behaviour by socalled experts. It might be better to get rid of the experts and reintroduce effective punishment for offenders to show them society means business. As Alf Garnett once observed " show them what living in a democracy is all about.....shoot the bu66ers who step out of line". If things are not taken severely in hand pdq it is going to be a very sad and dangerous place for the young kids of today to live in when they are adults.

Jill Sparrow 10,307
In my first teaching post, many years ago now, the head mistress spoke some very wise words. "The most important thing is self-discipline. Without it, no one can hope to achieve anything. However, self-discipline cannot be attained without discipline first having been imposed." Her words are very true.
DJ360 6,730
Obvious;ly the whole razor blade ting is nasty, stupid, vicious, etc, etc. There is no excuse. I can't disagree with Jill's point above, but it doesn't rest on punishment and retribution, so much as upbringing and proper socialisation, example, and most of all the inculcation of a perception of belonging and having a place. Much criminality and antisocial behaviour has it's roots in alienation, despair etc. I spent many years working in a school for kids with 'Moderate Learning Difficulties'. They were a very mixed bunch, ranging from those whose learning was 'delayed', by sensory impairments, or by assorted medical conditions such as severe epilepsy, 'Marfan' Syndrome, Aspergers and more severe autistic spectrum disorders etc, etc., to those who basically hadn't experienced a supportive environment because their parents could barely look after themselves, much less kids. What I will say is that not one of those kids was 'typical'. There's no such thing. I loved working there. The kids were all 'barmy' in the nicest possible sense, but mostly very open and because I wasn't a teacher (I was a Careers Adviser), I didn't expect them to call me Sir and they would delight in greeting me in a corridor with a 'high five' and a 'Hiya Colin!'. But what I noticed in that school was this. Whatever issues the individual child had, they were all subject to the same rules. They were all expected to respect the rules, the staff and each other. Nothing was allowed to pass. Every infringement of the rules, every outburst, every episode of bullying etc., was challenged. Challenged quietly and calmly, but challenged. It was a very impressive place. Interesting programme this evening. 'Gun No.6', detailing the crimes known to have been committed using this gun.. which is still 'out there' somewhere. Fascinating to listen to the self confessed crooks ( now all reformed ) , who were involved in such violence, and why/how they got involved, and also some of the victims. Some of the 'crooks' just struck me as not very bright. Others had tales of abandonment and so on. There are no simple answers.
DJ360 6,730
P.s. As already pointed out.. this stuff isn't new. Gangs, thuggery, and violence have existed for as long as society has. And oddly, it always seems to predominate in, or emanate from, deprived areas. https://guides.wikinut.com/London-Gangs-From-the-18th-Century-to-the-Nineteenth-Century./2ijqle6l/ Dickens' 'Oliver Twist' ably describes the way in which homeless waifs were recruited by unscrupulous crooks in the 'glory days' of the British Empire, which some of us seem keen to re-create. Greene's 'Brighton Rock' describes some pretty horrible 'Razor Gangs' etc., in the 1930s There's also plenty of evidence that 'delinquency' was an issue in Graeco-Roman times. We seem rather slow to grasp the causes..

I'd guess it won't be much better, or worse., because criminality, anti social behaviour etc., have always existed. I'm not condoning it, but it just is and always will be until we understand how to run societies in an equitable and mutually supportive way. America locks up more of its citzens than any country on Earth. Yet people continue to commit crime. People are pushed into poverty by wealthy elites, and then those elites wonder why the poor bite back. It really isn't Rocket Science.
mary1947 2,082
I have just read this topic and agree with the comments which all have you come back with, but what is the answer how can all this be stopped? we are supposed to be a civilised nation even animals only kill for food / fight for the right to mate. When we look at our selves we are worse that animals have we progressed at all from hanging people, chopping heads / hands/fingers off, we still have wars, we still have some countries not letting women get an education, men who are allowed more than one wife, arranged marriage, knife crime, you could go on and on and on!!! We call our selves civilised but are we?
Jill Sparrow 10,307
No, I don't think we are. Give me animals any day. As to men having more than one wife, my father used to say they should be committed to a lunatic asylum!!

Ayupmeducks 1,730
Not quite true @ Mary1947, foxes kill for pleasure, ask any Farmer who keeps chickens, as do skunks, weazles and Racoons. Some years back most of my hens were slaughtered by a Raccoon that had got into their coop. "Coons" look so cute, but are vicious killers.
Ayupmeducks 1,730
It's not the wives that would be the problem Jill, but all those Mother in laws....LOL
Jill Sparrow 10,307
My father didn't have a mother in law as my maternal grandma died before my mother married. However, he did have a wife and two daughters. What he used to call 'petticoat rule'! Dad was a very good looking chap and women always gravitated towards him but he avoided them like the plague, complaining that there were more than enough nagging females at home.

But I don't think you'd expect me to agree that all Left Wingers are 'Snowflakes', or that all Right Wingers are 'realists.' Rees-Mogg, Trump, Johnson. Realists? The second one was on MMW..further down near the Albany & Mint Bar. No not near the Albany, Ian. First one (Tudor frontage) on Mount St as in your pic. It didn't really move much, the second one was corner of Mount St/Maid Marian Way, partly on it's original site and partly on the corner when the government building was demolished. The cranes in the background I think are building the Albany, must be about '65ish.
