philmayfield 6,134
No. We do not have to embrace alien cultures. Sadly we just have to tolerate them. 2
TBI 2,351
I'm just wondering what efforts Nottstalgia members had to to take to tolerate Diwali last week? Noiseless fireworks so not to offend? Sounds a bit PC to me.

plantfit 7,597
Noiseless fireworks reminded me of the short time I spent at Berridge road school,I think I was about six years old, getting near to November fifth a female teacher bought into school some indoor fireworks and lit them one by one on a metal tea tray these were only about an inch long, there was some that appeared to crawl along the tray with different coloured "flame/light" and others that seemed to grow in appearance like lava from a volcano, all fascinating stuff to a six year old Rog
DJ360 6,730
You used to be able to buy them from the joke company that did the novelties, whoopee cushions and so on. Were they called 'Ellisdons' or similar? Col

catfan 14,793
I may have to accept new trends in society but will never accept LGBT as normal behaviour. Bit like leading a horse to water etc.
DJ360 6,730
This will definitely be my final word on this. I'm not addressing any individual. I'm just giving an alternative to some of the sentiments expressed here. I am neither pro nor anti gay. I am neither expressing pro gay gay views, nor dismissing anti gay views. I'm simply accepting of differences which have always existed but are now less hidden or dishonestly denied. Sadly small numbers of sexual predators exist in both the gay and heterosexual communities, so I'm at a loss why anybody should feel more threatened by gays than heterosexuals, especially when there are by most estimates less than 3% of the population identifying as Gay, Lesban, Bisexual or Transgender.. There seems to be a fairly common misconception that gays are all predators, or at least that predatory behaviour is more likely from gays. this is not supported by any sort of evidence and is therefore simple prejudice. In short, and using the word 'normal' in it's statistical sense, rather than its colloquial sense.. It is not normal to be gay, but it is normal for there to be a minority who are. Nobody is obliged to like this., but nothing anyone says or does will change it. I agree that free speech should not be curtailed. However, I believe that inaccuracy should be challenged. End of rant. Fireworks going off early all around here too, just as they have every year for the 40 I've lived here and just as we did when we were kids. There are virtually no Hindus here and there were none at all on Bestwood Estate so we couldn't link it to Diwali. Things did get a bit intolerable a few years back when some pretty powerful Chinese fireworks seemed to be on pretty much unrestricted sale. As I understand it, the powers that be have restricted these somewhat. I like fireworks, but don't buy them these days. Col
Brew 5,417
It seems the full initials are LGBTQIA so by failing to aknowledge them and omiting them you're likely to have upset the gentle souls who class themselves as Q: queer/questioning. I: intersex and the As': asexual/agender/aromantic. I have no idea what an aromantic is or does.
DJ360 6,730
Me neither Brew. I do recall one very famous person who is openly but rather quietly gay and described himself as .'A devout non-combatant'.
FLY2 10,108
Col, nobody insinuated that all gays are predators, I was generalising. Please don't take things literally. annswabey 599
A much higher number of propositioning and sexual assault is carried out by straight men and boys on women, than by gay men and boys on straight boys and men. loppylugs 8,429
Probably my last word on this subject and I mean it peaceably. Firstly I do not 'Hate' any individual or group. Homosexuality has been with us since long ago. Many historical books confirm that. I only even mention homosexuality because it is a topic that brings strong opinions on both sides. I think what most of us here are reacting to is any particular lifestyle being pushed at us via TV or other media. If we are really interested in it there are many sources of info available to us. I am a born again Christian (to use a well known phrase). Christianity was once dominant in western civilization. It's popularity has waned. Often because of the behavior of some prominent 'Christians.' Some of the things said about Christianity (not particularly here on NS). I find offensive, but I have to thicken my skin and shurrup. I further realize that if I am seen to proselytize I will probably offend somebody offended that I am pushing religion down his/her throat. So I don't do it. Certainly not intentionally. Though I can't hide my perspectives based on years of such belief. My Lord never pushed it down anyone's throat. He told them what He wanted and moved on. We are told that His hearers were often 'offended'. So much so they eventually crucified Him. He did not say what He said to harm or offend them. It was the way they took it. In my opinion the Internet has never been a good medium for discussing subjects on which very strong opinions are held. Things often tend to get said which would never be said in person. Good example here on NS has been politics. I respect the owner of this site and those he has appointed as mods / admin. I think they do a good job of keeping us lot in check. Said all of that to say this. All are entitled to their opinions. That is life in a civilized society. By the same token let all of us who may hold what is considered a minority opinion be careful how we come across. Let's also develop some thick hides and not be too easily offended when someone disagrees with what we espouse. I think what really rattles my chain and that of many others is the PC procedure of trying to silence those of differing opinions by calling them hateful, misogynist racist, homophobic, religious fanatics, etc as a means of silencing their right to speak. My opinion of Nottingham folks and their genuine concern for each other as experienced here is higher now than it ever was. End of sermon. I'm going out to pull me weeds and run me dogs.

NewBasfordlad 3,599
I think your right Loppy about stuff being pushed down your throat etc. It would seem to me all minorities these days have a very loud voice and will brow beat you if you do not accept their opinion or way of life. As Col has said the homosexual communities make up less than 3% of the population but gezzus they can make a hell of a racket and just like the people who come knocking at my door to preach/convert me I have a propensity to tell them to bugger off not because they are homosexual/Christian but because they keep pushing it down my throat. Some things really get my goat and its not always the minorities themselves, it can be the authorities and how they deal with things. The one that is really getting me on edge right now is that the police in some parts of the country are refusing to escort remembrance day parades through lack of man power. Yet they seemed to have plenty of man power for minority parades. 5

Jill Sparrow 10,306
By my calculations, you are 2 years younger than my sister. She was taught by Miss Smith as a 6/7 year old at Berridge. Miss Smith taught the top infants class for years. She had grey hair but it was fairly short. I've a photograph somewhere from around that time and Miss Smith is on it.
