What was your first car?

An orange Mini 850 with one of those funny gear levers that came out from underneath what they laughingly called a dashboard. I had it for years as my then missus had a variety of 'smart' company cars (Marinas!!). When she got her company Alfa Romeo, well she was in advertising by then, I got twitchy and bought an MGB GT, trouble is, I had terrible trouble selling the Mini, it never let me down and was in such lovely condition that prospective purchasers were suspicious of it. I sold it to a friend eventually, by then it had 120,000 on the clock, he doubled that with several more years of trouble free motoring. I wouldnt be surprised if 35 years on it's still going, it was just one of those cars, some are fine, some a pain in the arse.

Lets be a bit more patriotic, years ago the british used to fly in wellingtons now anything goes, trainers, flip flops.

First vehicle I owned was an old Honda 125 with flames on the petrol tank...it never started, so I got rid pretty quick!

First car I owned was a red ford fiasco... I mean fiesta. I lived in Clifton, worked in Bingham, and the damn thing used to cut-out at the Lings Bar island and the Saxondale Island every bleedin day! :(

Austin A40 Farina MK1, steering wheel the size of a dustbin lid , great car.

Hear, hear!...my first car too...ran for two years, then recouped original outlay.

Large steering wheel reminiscent of 50's American B movies - shame they weren't coloured white!

Cheers

Looks like I will have to make an arse of myself once again by stating my first car if one can call a three wheeler a car was a Reliant Regal Van, paid cash for that, had it a year then chopped it in for a NSU 1100 paid cash for that too, need I go on?

Now that I’m wealthier than one can imagine I seriously thinking of buying another cash car for, sorry that should read car for cash but as yet not made up my simple rough arse mind which to go for, do I go for a prestigious model like a Aston Martin or a simple little run about like a Kia whatsamacallit to save the planet, it’s hard to make up ones mind when one has loads of money…….loso….ha ha ha.

PS hasn’t this topic been covered before when I was poorer ?

Bip.

My first car, in 1978, 6 months after i passed my test aged 17 was a Mini 1000, then at 21 in 1981 I was the proud owner of a mini 1275GT with go faster stripes. that was a bit of a mare of a car, and in 1983 i bought a 2 year old Volkswagen Derby, great car. That lasted me a long time till i bought a VW polo in 1994 which was another mare! In 1995 i bought a Ford fiesta, and another fiesta in 2000 and yet another in 2002. In 2004 i treated myself to a brand new BMW mini in bright blue. God i loved that car........till some kind person walked in my front door, and lifted the keys from he kitchen and drove off in it on boxing day 2005.( god love living in ilkeston) it was found in Moorgreen reservoir a week later. i bought my daughters peugeot 206cc from her when she had her baby as it was a classic 'hairdressers car' and you couldnt get anyone it it other than the driver and one passenger, but i hated that and part chopped it 4 months later for another BMW mini. I kept that till December 2010 when i sold it to my other daughter and bought my current car, a mazda 2. I loved my minis but blimey they are an uncomfortable ride! im now happy with my mazda, and at least i can drive over a speed hump without my teeth rattling!

My first car was a Triumph Toledo which lasted a year or two until it was scrapped - then a Datsun 100A, which lasted until I ran it into the back of a Barton`s bus. I was coming up to the lights at the top of the road from Gedling to Mapperley top - was it called Arnold Lane? I was behind the bus in the right hand lane when the lights changed and I did my famous hill start = revving like mad and clutch up to biting cos I was dead scared of stalling on that steep hill. Then my clutch cable snapped and I shot forward into the bus. So - I was stalled in the right hand lane. In gear. No clutch. Friday evening rush hour.

I was told that the tailback was about two miles.

A coupla beefy types knocked it out of gear, manhandled it off the road through the cursing traffic. Gave my trembling self a lift home to Calverton.

Don`t know what happened to it. That was 1983 and it was my final car.

I think i beat the lot of you, my first car was a 1937 Austin 10, In 1957 i worked at Beechdale Garage. on Beechdale Rd.

The owner was Les Swift,( a good boss), at the time i was going to work on a James 98cc motor bike,

One day Les said to me , if you can sell that bike , i will give you a car that's coming in part ex, for another one.

so what did i do ,i got my selling head on and got rid ,within two days, I then took delivery of my first car.

A great little motor,my pride and joy

I've had quite a lot of cars since then, to many to mention..

hi mick2me,

The car in question was a 4 door cambridge, all black, with side bonnets to the engine bay,

Me & my first bride, whent on honeymoon down to London in it, we got wed in Dec,1959, a cold winter,

we drove down with blankets around our legs, no luxury of heaters in them days.

12 month after, i purchaced another one, but a 1939,same model, with a very good body to it.the only trouble with was a

nacked engine, I then set to ,removed my first engine ,overhauld it, rebore, crank regrind, etc rebuild, and then fitted it

to the second car, made a good car out of two, I did all this at my Dads yard at Oakland Av, Sawley, any where near you

Mick?
