I'm sure this is not an original thought but whoever decided the entry charges seems to have looked at the cost of refurbishment and then worked out how much they needed to charge to recover the costs. This of course was the wrong way round. People will not pay over the odds to get the Trust/City Council out of a hole but will compare the cost with other attractions and decide whether it is value for money. Adrian Jones and Chris Matthews in their book Towns in Britain say the pre-refurbishment castle was the dreariest museum and art gallery you can imagine. From comments here and

Two good results today. Consultant confirms my PSA level has dropped dramatically, so he's as confident as he can be that I’m now free of prostate cancer. Then, I get a call from Virgin to offer me a deal, after I’d dropped most of what I had been paying for up to last month. Net result is that I get my broadband speed doubled, Sky Sports, Sky Movies, free calls anytime, and they’re even throwing Netflix in. All that for less than half of what I was paying before, although it will cost me an extra 1p a month over the basic package I had moved to.

Thanks for posting photograph @Cliff Ton. It’s one @Oztalgianwanted to see. Two buses operated by Butler Bros of Kirkby in Ashfield. The main focus is of the Crossley originally fitted with a Henry Street body, however, that has been replaced. There is a Bedford OB to the rear which is the bus @Oztalgianis interested in.
