  1. Tomorrow Australian time we celebrate our Remembrance Day 25th April is ANZAC Day The day starts with dawn services symbolising the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps that took part in the Gallipoli campaign in 1915. Whilst I have no relatives in Australia who took part in conflicts I do take time to remember my Dad who survived Dunkirk, was posted with the 8th Army to North Africa then invaded Sicily and fought up through Italy. My mum was in the WAAF initially on balloon crews and then on the bomber airfields of Notts/Lincs. My Maternal grandfather fought with the Royal Ulster Rifles

  2. The Dickinson & Morris pies sold in supermarkets are nothing like the ones they sell in their own shop, full of gristle and lacking any flavour. Last one I tried ended up in the bin. The only half way decent supermarket pork pie that I’ve found, having sampled many, is Sainsbury’s own brand, although it could do with more seasoning. Must remember to get a proper one from Chambers next time I’m in Arnold…

  3. I was also named after an uncle, my mam's elder brother. Serving in the Sherwood Foresters he was sent to the far East, taken prisoner, survived the Burma railway only to die when torpedoed by an America Submarine, USS Sealion. He was on the Rakuya Maru, one of the infamous hell ships whilst being transported to Japan.

  4. Just been investigating some very loud hedgehog grunting by my shed and there are 2 hedgehogs presumably going through the rutting procedure. Have left them to it and left more food out in case they need some sustenance! Bless them.

  5. That is the one glaring fault on that model that really annoys me is the bonnet top. It should be maroon not cream.

  6. Back in their heyday Pork Farms’ pies were as good as Dickinson and Morris’s although the latter claim to be the originator of the Melton pork pie. Nowadays pies bought from the supermarkets have the similar mass produced aura about them and you have to seek out the smaller makers to get a ‘proper’ pie. Jack Bailey at Upper Broughton was my favourite but he closed a few years ago. It’s an interesting quest to find the perfect pie. Now the pork pie season is upon us I shall pursue my investigations further.

  14. Rog, it went on for a couple of hours with the male circling the female grunting. I thought it was the chuffing of the steam train at Great Central when I first heard it ! They ended up under my barbeque after he went there first and she followed so I guess she finally gave in. He’ll be off now with no interest in the bringing up of the babies.

  15. I had my car washed by the Albanians in Newark last week. The best part is being leathered dry by the two ladies. I always leave a generous tip!

  16. The original reason for the jelly in a pork pie was to preserve the meat and keep it moist. Eating it is optional. You can, if you desire, eat the paper in which it’s wrapped!

  17. Had an interesting time with a plumber yesterday. The pressure relief valve from the hot water tank was leaking and to set about replacing it he had to turn off the supply to the solar water heater on the roof. Easy job valve replaced but when it came to turn the water on again the stop tap for the solar water heater would not stop leaking. He called his apprentice to get a new one and it was soon fitted with no problem. Just one job left, that was to change the cold water supply to the kitchen from tank water to mains. We had to top the tanks up with mains water a few weeks ago as we hav

  18. If Nuno was half as good as he thinks he is and his overpaid prima donnas had put some effort in they would not be where they are today. Blaming everyone else for problems entirely of their own making throughout the season smells of absolute desperation to me.

  22. How many on here still count the wagons or carriages as a train passes? I know I do! The length of some of the trains here task your counting ability especially the coal trains in NSW and QLD. We travelled from Adelaide to Darwin a few years ago on the Ghan. The longest one was 1,096 metres with 44 carriages and 2 locomotives.
