    The Queen

Always benjamin1945, too much bad feeling in the world not to show kindness, it makes a lot of difference. The Queen had that quality of making people feel special and valued irrelevant of their circumstances.

    The Queen

I am a fan of the monarchy but what I do find interesting historically is that the new head of the Church of England and his Queen Consort are both divorcees and this is acceptable and divorce is recognised by the Church. Of course the creator of the Church of England did so because he wanted to get rid of his first wife to marry Boleyn and that was acceptable. Why was it not acceptable that both Princess Margaret and Charles could not marry the loves of their life at the time ? Interesting conundrum.
  3. My dad worked for Players for 40 years so maybe that was the connection. He passed away in 1984 so would definitely have known Eric. It was a magnificent building. Thanks for the explanation of why it was called Smiths Bank. My dad would have convinced anyone he had either a large balance or overdraft. The latter would have always been the case! We actually didn’t realise this till he died but he gave us all a really good life wheeling and dealing his finances. That was all that mattered.
  4. Yes Boris and Donald were always entertaining, just not believable either of them.
  5. Didn’t that Nat West Bank used to be called Smiths Bank Branch? My father used to bank there. The manager used to believe everything he told him about why bills weren’t paid. He was very convincing.
  6. I can remember dating a guy from Guildford Surrey who I had met on holiday in Ibiza in my late teens and was invited to go down there and meet the parents. We dined al fresco which was quite unusual in those days. His mother asked me very loudly during this “Do you come from the North dear?” as if it was another planet. I knew that the relationship was doomed from that point on.
  7. I can also remember doing maypole dancing every year at the garden fete behind the old rectory in Tollerton. Loved it but had to practice very hard beforehand, it wasn’t easy. You only had to have one person go wrong and it was an absolute disaster!

Talking of Cavendish Woodhouse we used to live next door to a Betty Simmons who worked there for what seemed like “ever”. My brother also had a stint there amongst his many many other jobs in his life.
  9. LizzieM v funny! I can remember going to the one on Huntingdon St several times, usually when my father used to leave it till the last minute to send bill payments off. We should have played the “Last Post” at his funeral ! He had the entire collection of Bunter books, think he may have modelled himself on him, always waiting for a postal order, which actually never arrived. Whatever happened to postal orders?

Wasn’t the main PO on Huntingdon Street?
  11. siddha talking about 3 wheelers, my brother had a mate called Clink Clark who had a red bubble car. Unfortunately the reg began with PTO so invariably if he parked it anywhere it was turned over.
  12. We’re at the annual British Midland Spirit fly in at Bidford on Avon gliding club on Wednesday so hopefully the Arrows will do a fly past if they’re active that day. They have before so fingers crossed. Will be good to see some old friends anyway and have a short break of a couple of nights down there.
  13. Well done you! Keep it up, great gentle exercise.
  14. Cliff Ton you’re right with the road. I obviously have the cinema location wrong. The only cinema ever to be in WB apparently was the Tudor on the corner of Central Ave and Rectory Road and it was demolished in 1959. Hence Tudor Square being named after it. Apparently it was the first cinema in the Nottingham area to show “talkies”.
  15. My brother lived in Acocks Green when he did his mechanical engineering apprenticeship with BSA.
  16. Jill Sparrow, my husband was in the Army and was in Berlin when the wall came down. I still have a little plastic bag with bits of it in.
  17. Did there used to be a cinema on Radcliffe Road WB as you go up towards Trent Bridge on the left hand side? The current noise of the rain (golly we need it!) reminded me of going to watch something there and hearing torrential rain as we were watching the movie and then coming out afterwards and it was absolutely flooded. Would be around the late 60’s, early 70’s. Mrs B
  18. Here you go, not very big but very tasty
  19. Thought I’d let you know after various prior discussions on these that I have already harvested 6 to date and they are epic. Apart from the sweetcorn, they’re about the only things that are really thriving in this heat.
  20. Particularly a note to nonna, apparently there is going to be a shortage of olive oil due to the really high temperatures across Europe. How are your olives doing in Italy?
  21. Apparently there’s a competition between posties as to who wears shorts for the most time. Who would have known it eh?
  22. Nothing would inspire me to get a bike again. My balance isn’t good enough, although did have a shopper bike when the kids were in their teens just to pretend I knew how to ride it!
  23. Yeah so sad, grew up with Liv. Have you seen the tribute from John Travolta, very nice.
