  1. I reckon that they should name him after one of the most famous Anglo-Americans from history, who also was a good friend of the Queen. All hail Prince Winston.
  2. There was a time in a pub I used to frequent in Harby when you could buy fresh whole salmon that were “liberated” from Petfoods, which were originally destined for Chappie dog food. Tasted ok to me, and did wonders for my coat.
  3. Doesn’t look like South Wales.
  4. Much to the chagrin of many commentators on the Nottm Post pages, and no doubt elsewhere.
  5. From what I recall of my experience there, and what I know about other former pupils, definitely unusual!
  6. Was great to meet you tonight, Margie. My wife needs to know your secret at looking so young!
  7. Me too. It will be the first time I’ll have walked through those doors in 46 years!
  8. On the site of the infamous Beechwood Children’s Home. I wonder how many of the new residents know of its history?
  9. Cast your minds back to 1975/6. The (then) new manager inherited a lacklustre team and struggled to get anywhere with the players at his disposal, finishing in 16th place in the second tier. What happened subsequently is history. O’Neill and Keane need time to build a squad to play the kind of football they want, rather than have to endure the demands of armchair experts who expect instant results.
  10. And if anyone locally is in need of a cobbler, I can recommend “The Sherwood Cobbler” on Haydn Road, at the Sherwood end. Proper, traditional, shoe repairer, and very competitively priced. Had my walking boots resoled there recently. As good as new.
  11. Steve Bray. And he does have a job. He makes his living as a coin dealer. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steve_Bray_(activist)
  12. One other snippet about our visit to Navarra is that they asked my Polish-born father-in-law if he wanted to meet the chef, so that the Polish chef could talk to someone in his own language! It didn’t faze FiL at all, as he was fluent in Polish and Italian (as well as English, Czech, and Ukrainian), having studied in Italy when the war ended.
  13. The Italian restaurant on Oakdale Road is still there, it’s called Navarra. No website, but they are on Facebook. https://m.facebook.com/NavarraItalianRestaurant/?locale2=en_GB My wife’s family used to live round the corner from it in the 1970s and knew the family well. In fact, when my father-in-law returned to the U.K. after living in Canada for over thirty years, they recognised him when we went for a meal!
  14. Saw it at the Bonington cinema when it was on there, and ordered the DVD soon after. The DVD includes some songs from the Live Aid performance which were cut from the film. Best played when you can turn the volume up to 11.

    Ted McKenna

Saw him perform when SAHB played the Uni back in 1975. Bloody good drummer, although all the crowd’s focus was on Alex and Zal.
  16. As I recall, before it was taken over by Allders, it was a Co-Op store.
  17. Not Hutchinson. They’re from Hong Kong and run the Three mobile network. Virgin Media are owned by an American company, Liberty Global. The same people who are intent on ruining Formula One.
  18. Lindleys have gone through quite an expansion in the last couple of years since his son David took over the business, taking over a few other local garages. I use their Arnold branch for tyres as they’re as cheap as online companies. https://www.lindleysautocentres.co.uk/about-us/our-history/
  19. Back in the day, I was a regular at the Nottingham Track League cycle races which ran every Wednesday evening between March/April and autumn. My main memory is that it was always freezing!
  20. At the risk of going wildly off-topic, and as I knew both of them, John Aslin and Ray Booty competed in very different versions of cycle sport. Ray was a time-triallist, competing only against the clock over distances from 25 miles to 12 hours, while John was involved more in road racing, like the Tour of Britain, which was more “savage” and elbow to elbow.
  21. As an aside, I noticed a reply on the GVPS Facebook post that the shop next door used to be a butchers shop owned by John Aslin. His son, Jack, was a good friend of my dad, and Jack’s son, John, was at one time a very good friend of our own LizzieM. The world gets smaller every day!
  22. White phone boxes were National Telephone Company, so pre-Post Office Telephones. Hull is is another story. They stayed separate and were run by Hull City Council until they became Kingston Communications.
  23. I’m happy with the signing of Martin O’Neill. He’s served a long enough apprenticeship with smaller teams so should be up to the job now. The key will be to see how he controls the players in the dressing room, as by all accounts that’s where the trouble has mainly been for the previous managers. If he did indeed learn from the master, he will know what needs doing.
  24. Back in 1973/4, I used to listen to Radio Nottingham at work on Saturday mornings. John Holmes and Ashley Franklin hosted a programme called Extravaganza, which was about the only place outside of Old Grey Whistle Test where you could hear prog rock. And after the show, a crowd of us used to meet up with Ashley in the back bar of the Bell, with John occasionally dropping in for a pint (or three).
