  1. My grandma lived on Dunlop Avenue and I went there many times in the late 50s/early 60s. I don't remember seeing a playgroup type of place at the top of the road, so I reckon yours must have been Johnson Road. (Lenton Blvd by the way, not Radford)
  2. Bilborough Wood, it seems to have been called. This map shows the area just before Chingford was built; the beginning of it is marked, but it doesn't go any further.
  3. Went past the area a few days ago and all the buildings around Radford Mill have been cleared. Garden Street and Norton Street now have wide open views. It's not now connected to anything else. Turning 180 degrees towards Denman Street, this factory/warehouse has survived. From Garden Street you can see across to the Globe pub, which has been derelict and boarded up for longer than I can remember. Must be a record for the Nottingham area. And from Garden Street you can see across to Norton Street and the former Congregational Hall.
  4. As you've said the house is now No 33, I can pinpoint it exactly on a map of the period - like this. The bigger house marked on the left on the old map is still there today and on Streetview can be identified as Leicester Villa 1896.
  5. That makes two of us, although I don't think I was born today.
  6. At risk of seeming a bit extreme, do you know the house number on Hickling Road? It might help locate it (or its absence) eg high number end, or low number end.
  7. You are not alone! Difficult to log on this morning with this appearing all the time.
  8. Yes, I remember being taken there in the early/mid 60s, the days of short-back-and-sides. The entrance was this door, and you went into the semi-basement. http://goo.gl/maps/aXFXV The windows with grills just visible at ground level were the only source of natural light, and they were at ceiling level in the building itself.
  9. I've been up and down Exchange Walk since I was very young, and even back then I don't remember seeing any signs for a club. In fact I don't think there has ever been any space between two shops which could accommodate a club entrance. Are you perhaps mixing Exchange Walk with another Walk/Alley/Yard/Place ?
  10. As you get older (so I'm told) hair starts to increasingly disappear from your head, but increasingly sprouts in places like your ears, nose, and back. You sometimes see people - usually male - who have longer hair coming out of their nose than they do on their head.
  11. Sat-Navs are designed to be used in conjunction with a human brain. The problem arises when they are used by people without a human brain.
  12. ....which is surprising considering that everything in their food departments is more expensive than any other store. If Sainsbury/Tesco/Asda can make a profit by selling things cheaper than the Co-op, how useless are they?
  13. Eight digits? Seven digits? A bit extravagant. I'm glad to say I don't remember the good old days when phone numbers were a bit more minimalist. This could match the reputation of a lot of people on this site.
  14. In the 1970s people probably complained that the "new" programmes like Fools and Horses or Porridge weren't funny like the good old days of Whacko or Rag Trade. Most of that old stuff I don't find particularly funny. I still rate the old Spike Milligan Q series and I grew up on Python, but I also like recent material like the current Vic & Bob programme, and for me the best comedy of recent times was Green Wing on Channel 4 a couple of years ago.
  15. Not quite a horse picture, but from the 1930s.
  16. It's surprising this kind of thing hasn't happened more often. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-birmingham-23123549
  17. People pushing supermarket trollies who just stop dead in their tracks to look at something, oblivious to everyone behind who all come crashing to a stop.
  18. Annoying habits...? People who have the annoying habit of taking any thread on any subject and coming out with the same attitude.
  19. Quite a few Garfields on PTP. One of them must ring a bell. http://www.picturethepast.org.uk/frontend.php?action=printdetails&keywords=Ref_No_increment;EQUALS;NTGM019423&prevUrl= http://www.picturethepast.org.uk/frontend.php?action=printdetails&keywords=Ref_No_increment;EQUALS;NTGM019421&prevUrl= http://www.picturethepast.org.uk/frontend.php?action=printdetails&keywords=Ref_No_increment;EQUALS;NTGM000463&prevUrl= http://www.picturethepast.org.uk/frontend.php?action=printdetails&keywords=Ref_No_increment;EQUALS;NTGM011958&prevUrl=
  20. I detect a bit of a misunderstanding. What Ashley was saying is that #70-76 mentioned the fact that Dyggor Gaylord used to occupy the site where ikea is now. briyeo in #78 referred to another company called Bonser Engineering who were "near where Ikea stands today". Possibly two different things.

  23. The thread about Colwick Pleasure Gardens has led to a place which was almost next door to the gardens, White City Stadium. I never went there but it was the home of speedway racing for quite a few years. It no longer exists and is buried under an industrial estate. This link tells you all you ever need to know, and contains some amazing photos of the days when it was operating. http://www.defunctspeedway.co.uk/Nottingham.htm
  24. It seems that half the population of Nottstalgia used to go there http://nottstalgia.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=4911&hl=dungeon#entry116702
