  1. Went there years ago (1991) on a school trip to Blists Hill....Fascinating place - The sweets are out of this world.
  2. Apologies Alison. Thanks for posting the images. Is the library building still there???
  3. Lol!!! Thanks for clearing that one up for me Cliff Ton
  4. Maybe I'm asking a daft question, so forgive me. But was Mundella on the same site as the Becket School or have I got my bearings completely wrong???
  5. I was in Nottingham a couple of weeks ago, and it is apparent that Nottingham City Council and the tourism chiefs just don't have a clue about marketing Nottingham, which is really sad as the city, Robin Hood aside is rich in history and culture. The first thing I would implement if I was "in charge" is a museum dedicated to Nottingham, including exhibits on Nottingham's role in the Civil War, Raliegh, Boots, Players, Lace, Shipstones and Home Ales, aswell as other exhibits charting the history of the city. Many would say that there are displays in Nottingham Castle, but I just don't think tha
  6. Welcome to the group Malc . . I too live in the Emerald Isle, situated in Co Mayo......Its great to see ex-pats of Nottingham on the group
  7. R.I.P Richard Briers, will forever be known as Tom from The Good Life. I too have a liking for his performance as Martin in the BBC's Ever Decreasing Circles.
  8. It is sad that a community has been disbanded. But I agree with the comment on the link, which said that they need to look at the homes of the Victorian and Edwardian period......Has to be said it's the only time regeneration and planning worked well...... It's time to forget building futuristic homes that no more enhance the area than the block of flats they are replacing.
  9. Interested to learn that they demolished the old Dale Cinema . . . I daren't ask what they plan to build on the site!!!!!
  10. Why can't they just incorporate a Georgian style facade, just to connect with the buildings either side? My guess is that it will be glass and steel frontage
  11. That's the building between the Theatre Royal and the Empire......Anyone know what it's use was. I only ask as I've read that the Empire was demolished in 1969, but this building seemed to remain till 1974
  12. What's going on in the bottom picture??? Is it just roadworks or is it for the Trams???? Looks like I'll be finding out for myself in a months time when I hit the streets of Nottingham for a short visit :D
  13. The 1974 video is very interesting . . . I have one question the building next to the Theatre Royal, not the Hotel, the other side was it a shop or did it form part of the old Empire Theatre?????
  14. It's a great insight to the Nottingham of 1902 . . . I wonder if there's anymore footage of Nottingham available on DVD throughout the decades.... I'm over in Nottingham in March, will be interesting to see the changes since my last visit
  15. What a fantastic view of the area. Many thanks for posting....
  16. I agree Beefsteak. Winner's 1963 film "WEST 11" is one of my favorite, and which of course starred Britain's perenial Blonde Bombshell, Diana Dors. Over the last couple of years I have campaigned to get the film released via Studiocanal who refused (Luddites), but now they have sold part of their film library to Network DVD, so it is my great hope that this classic gem of a film from the 60's finally recieves the public appreciation it so deserves. R.I.P Michael Winner
  17. Great aerial photograph.....It really has changed so much. Thanks for posting Cliff Ton
  18. More money than sense in my honest opinion. And to think that the re-branding of 12 of their shopping centres is going to cost £25 Million... Surely theirs a couple they could spend on demolishing the Broadmarsh, not only would that be re-branding but also a huge improvement. I'm heading back to Nottingham for a few days in March, and can't wait to see the changes since my last visit :D
  19. Hello Mango. The documentry hasn't recieved any official DVD release. I will see if I can get you a copy from my disc - that's if it hasn't been protected. Was your Mother any of the ladies that were interviewed???? It's a great documentry, but with what I've since learnt about the history of St Anns it's also a great piece of propoganda from N.C.C
  20. Many thanks for the link, much appreciated.
  21. Great topic, and great to see the maps of St Ann's. Does anyone know where I can purchase a map of St Ann's prior to the area's re-development??? Prefably one from the 1960's if you can help it would be much appreciated. Many thanks in advance
  22. I knew I knew her name, but it wasn't until reading today's Daily Express that I saw her picture I knew who it was. I remember watching her (in a repeat) of "Man About The House" in which she played Paula Wilcox's mother. I agree Jackson, she did have a warm and welcoming voice. R.I.P Daphne Oxenford.
  23. Welcome to the group Soulgirl . . . .
  24. Fascinating topic. Did a check on google images, came across some interesting photographs of both the interior and exterior of Welbeck Abbey. I wonder do they do guided tours of the building???
