The Old Angel website says it's a refurbishment. Glad to hear it - its one of the first pubs i ever went to.

I've always loved the Arboretum and it's sad to see it in such a decline.

I'm a great fan of rail travel, but this project is a right waste of money. You can get from Nottingham to London by rail in under two hours. Why spend billions to knock off a few minutes? They'd be better using the massive sum to reopen closed lines and to update those that are run down.

General Cemetery Canning Circus & Alfreton Rd.
DavidA replied to Kendaldrac's topic in Nottingham Ancestry Forum
I helped someone from Somerset get a picture of a grave in the General Cemetery a few years ago. There was no stone, but the staff gave me the general location and put a stick in the ground with a label to show me the exact spot when I got there. I got the impression that cemetery records existed. -
I might go and see this. It's a classic, and is far better than the souless dross the studios spew out today.

I too love all the photos, and I never realised that people would take a lack of obvious thanks as a lack if interest.

I love these old photos, please keep 'em coming, and thanks for posting them.

Yes , he wrote three booklets "In Search of Mapperley" 1, 2 and 3. They're packed with photos and interesting facts. Strongly recommended to those interested in Mapperley.

You still get table service, crockery and cutlery at the Wimpy in the Broadmarsh.

Don't be put off by left-wing rent-a-mob, watch the hunt and don't be dictated too.

It's got to be Gamston roundabout to Colwick for me.

We're in the mess we're in now because free debate has been stifled.

Best wishes to you both.

Apologies if someone has posted this elsewhere, but there is a petition going asking intu (who own the Victoria Centre) to put the Emett Clock back where it used to be. https://www.change.org/p/intu-victoria-centre-return-the-emet-clock-to-it-s-original-position-in-victoria-centre-nottingham?recruiter=133176350&utm_source=share_petition&utm_medium=facebook&utm_campaign=autopublish&utm_term=des-sm-share_petition-no_msg&fb_ref=Default

I reckon the Council will be looking at the Council House soon. They will say it's expensive to maintain and exclusive. Then they will say they want to build a "Peoples Palace".

Ivor - I've a little tin of snuff right beside me. Aniseed flavour, lovely.

Good idea. but perhaps the tram name memorial should be "Tommy Atkins". That was the famous nickname applied to British - and particularly English - soldiers for a very long time. By naming the tram after "Tommy Atkins" we'd be paying tribute to all the 'Tommies' of WW1.

I've never heard of this tradition, but I'm going to try it this year.

Thanks all.

As you drive from Carlton Road towards Daleside Road, on the left hand side of Manvers Street, just before you get to Sneinton Hermitage, you pass a tall grey brick retaining wall. I believe there was once a railway goods yard on top. Anyway, there is a large tunnel built into it. Does anyone know what is in there? A new sign has appeared on the wall outside it recently, but it's been too dark for me to make it out as I drive by.

The Scot was based on the famous "Fighting Mac", General Sir Hector MacDonald (1853 - 1903). He enlisted as a Private and ended up as a General - something that doesn't happen too often. Sadly he eventually committed suicide over allegations of homosexuality with young boys.
