  1. Ian it was a 101Mansfield Woodhouse to Huthwaite. If I missed the 106 to Sutton via Unwin Rd and Eastfield Side I used to catch the101 but it was then quite a hike to get to work. MDT and MGO buses were always well turned out and maintained. Photo from Huthwaite on Line
  2. That's easy Ben and without Google Chick Thomson Joe McDonald Bobby McKinlay - The clubs' greatest ever servant John Quigley Stewart Imlach I think that Jeff Whitefoot is the only member of that team that is still with us Interestingly there were no Welsh nationals in either team on that day
  3. Ben, I can't remember a Marsdens in Bliduth or Renuth, CO-OP stores yes but not a Marsdens?
  4. What about Bill Whare? He was from Guernsey, which is not part of the United Kingdom
  5. Forest's Zigger Zagger, Joe Baker and Ian Storey-Moore with Ian St John The multi-million pound jessies of today would not play on pitch like that they would get their tootsies and dandy-paws cold. Well remember the orange ball and the cleared snow from the lines on the pitch with the lines marked in blue.
  6. Looked again at my maps and yes TBI you are right it does not change to Sutton Road until Spencer Street and the William IV pub.
  7. Yes an ASDA and as TBI said Padley Hill Rd is just out of shot on the old photo the ASDA store is on the corner of Padley Hill Rd and what is now Sutton Rd. The Miller would be near where the front of the store is.
  8. TBI I have just checked on some old maps and agree that the only way you can get that view of the Red Lion is from what is now Sutton Rd but back in the day it was called Stockwell Gate
  9. The clue is if you look further down the road in the picture you will see the Red Lion, this is almost opposite the old Mansfield Shoe Co building, I think it was actually on Stockwell Gate and was demolished during redevelopment during the 1950's, however that photo gives me the idea that it was on Sutton Rd. Is there any chance that the image has been reversed? There was a book by Robert Dodsley called the "King and the Miller of Mansfield" a sequel to this was "Sir John Cockle At Court", the name of another local pub.
  10. Happy Birthday DJ, mine is later this year, 1949 was a good year. How about sharing the playlist.
  11. Many Pubs around the area I was brought up in associated with Robin Hood and his Merry Men Robin Hood Hotel Rainworth, sadly now a Tesco Express Little John Inn Ravenshead (Fishpool), still a pub The Jolly Friar Blidworth, Demolished now housing The Archer Rainworth, still a pub Forest Folk Hotel Blidworth, Demolished now a Tesco Express The Sherwood Rainworth, still a pub The Sherwood Ranger Ravenshead, still a pub The Robin Hood Edwinstowe, still a pub The Bold Forester Mansfield, still a pub Probably many others that I have forgotten
  12. Just as I was looking forward to the Barmy Army taking the pi$$ out of Steve Smith and David Warner, if selected, over "sandpapergate" in the upcoming Ashes series England go into collapso cricket mode. All out for 77 against the Windies. After 43 years here I still cannot bring myself to support Australia when playing the Poms but I am really fed up with getting hammered every game. Think I'll be following the English Netball team if I want any chance of a victory against the Australians.
  13. The classic shots of Mansfield. The Market Square near where the hot pea stall and Froggatts roundabout used to be, he Market Hotel is still trading, and then on to Church Street looking down to St Peters and then back up through the viaduct. I cannot place where the suburban house is though but as the car came down Westgate I would suggest somewhere in the Chesterfield Road area
  14. On a bit of a hold during summer, for me it is more of a cold wet winters day thing. I have managed a fair rendition of Ode To Joy, the bass line is only C and G so I can manage that. No fancy work yet
  15. Too bl**dy hot here, record maximum temperature of 46.8 degrees. It is now 9:00pm and still 38, a hundred in the old numbers. Send ice urgently.
  16. I know what you mean FLY, I too do that on my travels around Australia. Every small town throughout Australia has its war memorial and on them there are many members of the same family that paid the ultimate sacrifice. The small town of Maroon in SE Queensland suffered more than most during WW1 where 40% of the men that enlisted did not return. Of the 35 families that lived in the area 42 men enlisted 17 were killed, five of eight grandsons from one family did not survive. At the Australian War Memorial in Canberra there is a Hall of Memory where bronze plaques record the names only,
  17. From an era when cricket commentators knew and understood that you don't have to rabbit on all the time.
  18. Very much looks like it, it is a long way to safety from where they are but here's hoping.
  19. The namby pamby pc brigade would not dare to show something like IAHHM today. Everything has to be sanitised to protect the snowflakes. He had a great voice and I enjoyed his appearances in the Carry On films RIP Windsor and thanks for the laughs.
  20. Never knew you were bilingual Ian. That must be a first Nottinghamese and Strine in one sentence
  21. 'ere y go ayup, this should bring back some memories https://www.firstlighttravel.com/blog/the-art-of-speaking-strine-australian-slang

    Why?

Why are fridges sold that have a compartment to store eggs in that has 10 holes when eggs are sold in dozens?
  23. Are we talking Alan "Noddy" Hinton here or is there another Noddy? He of the white boots and powerful shot
  24. I'm with RR we have tried yesterday's heroes in the past without much success, Frank Clark and Stuart Pearce. I liked O'Neill as a player and for the sake of the long suffering fans I hope he does well. There is something fundamentally wrong at the City Ground, does anyone on here know what it is?
