  1. Was in Perth(W.A.) 2 days ago.Went into `the London Arcade'/Walk and there was a similar shoppe. My wife bought a 250gm.jar of Marmite,$15 !.What does it cost in the UK?Numerous jars of wonderous English sweets. If you are ever in Australia, visit Perth -seems to be full of British migrants. I had a friend from school here until fairly recently-brought a touch of English culture to this barbaric land as director and Principal conductor of WASO(no Ashley and Firbeck, nothing to do with the bus system(which was in 3 parts in the city and completely FREE for all). (David Measham -RIP). There is a
  2. Sorry,Mariag, My (whats left of it) addled brain is not working well .My son in law informs me you can watch that self same brain being operated on,on British TV tonight instead of `Heartbeat'(am sure Ashley will be miffed!). Modbury is now adjacent to one of the most beautiful areas in Adelaide(Golden Grove) but miles away from my home at Brighton(in G.W.R.). My elder son lives there but I do not know it well. What were the other questions?
  3. For you Ashley. Why Australia is in Trouble The population of this country is 20 million. 11 million are retired. That leaves 9 million to do the work. There are 5 million in school Which leaves 4 million to do the work. Of this there are 2 million employed by the federal government. Leaving 2 million to do the work. 0.1 million are in the armed forces preoccupied with killing Osama Bin-Laden. Which leaves 1.9 million to do the work. Take from that total the 1.5 million people who work for state and city Governments. And that leaves 0.4 million to do the work. At any given time
  4. Stan

    Quandry

    No idea ,Ashley,I`m completely `stumped'.
  5. hi ashley.all the eye ties are living in bakersfield! lol.
  6. Thanks all especially Ashley who sent me a private message, puddings all round, and now I can be cheeky and ask if anyone has a map of the area around weekday cross and Broad Marsh. TED
  7. Thanks Ashley. Plantfitt Shouldn't someone have informed the fire brigade that the Brit wasn't coming, I bet they weren't impressed. See the 'Steam' site for some old Brit pics.
  8. Firstly ,Firbeck, Ashley was talking about the 1st world war and not the second. HMAS Sydney ( I presume this is the one of the 5 that carried the name) was sunk in the 2nd. world war by an act of gross deceit on the part of the Germans. (Engaged the disguised German merchant raider Kormoran off Western Australia in 1941 - the ships sank each other. Discovery of the wreck was announced on 17 March 2008 following the discovery of Kormoran's wreckage one day earlier.) The RAN was under the command of the Admiralty in the FIRST world war that Ashley refers to ,NOT the 2nd which you have bro
  9. Be carefull Ashley, that could be construed as a reference to the exploits of HMAS Sydney, you know, the contemporary Aussie 7000 ton, 8 x 6inch armed naval cruiser, sunk with all hands by a worn out, lightly armed German merchant ship in Aussie waters. A terrible state of affairs, but perhaps it had something to do with starting off the Aussie obsession of deciding to attempt to swim better than anyone else.
  10. Yes this was one of Churchill`s biggest ever c#ck-ups ,Ashley, together with the British navy dropping the soldiers in the wrong place! I know one of the St. Georges was martyred (the Roman soldier, but did not know how he died)
  11. As you are probably aware ,Ashley, many theories of St. George abound. I like the one where he aws a brave christian Roman soldier. But alas everyone knows only a Kiwi or an Aussie could fit the bill. !inthebin!
  12. Ashley, Yeah, same one, the entrance was at the side of the newsagents on Aspley lane, 77 club were there...............that's where I remember Mick Pinder, Mick Simpson (Simmo) and Beau................ !!
  13. Ashley, The church club was behind the church between Melbourne Road & Amersham Rise..........There was also a Scooter(Lambrettas/vespas etc) club called 'The Outlaws'....................not many members ! recall!!! !!
  14. It could have been 41 club Ashley, did you go on any of the rallies?
  15. Yes, I saw that picture myself Ashley, probably the same book as the open top car, I think the haversack type radio was something like the military used in WW2 not sure but I think it was called an A10 set Rog
  16. Ashley are you thinking about the yellow one boon used..........Barrys van my mates owdman used to own it lived on Caunton ave just up from brewsters....and the one used in Boon was owned by another mate that lived on permain dr opposit brewsters....Boon even signed his log book....
  17. Sorry Ashley, I know what you really mean. It used to be called 'Mothering Sunday' and extended to little more than the old man giving mum a cup of tea in bed and me making a card and knicking some daffodils out the garden. It's just gone the way of American in your face over commercialisation with the hint that it is to be ignored at your peril. I was surprised to read that Mothering Sunday is an old European pagan festival going back to Roman times, whereas Mothers Day is an American festival in May, created to celebrate mothers who suffered in the Civil War. It was mainly created in it's m
  18. My missus has just passed out at the thought of 4 bits of Troika for a fiver. Ashley As my mother is still alive I don't see that there's owt wrong in sending her a card or taking her out for a meal on Mothers Day, isn't that what your'e suggesting, or on another day so it's not classed as a rip-off.
  19. Ashley, Thanks for the Photos of Potters & Northgate.............what memories, my first daughter was born there, she's nearly 40 now!! Craig, thanks for correcting my faulty memory of Manfred, I could only remember going in to a Basford |Chippie & seeing him serving chips!! all a bit surreal, as he previously only sold stuff that made your head swim................but that's another story................
  20. So many people to answer....start with my old mate Brian, blimey mate, good to hear from you! What a great site this is! My mum still lives there on Northgate, but my Auntie Kath, who moved away and married a very rich man, died about 5 years ago. I remember coming over to your house, with the hidden bath near or in the kitchen, I was fascinated! Also baby sitting Hilary, and the things we used to get up to, your mum and dad leaving us a bottle of Shippos orangeade, and lemonade. Remember the Sundays we would go fishing, was it Police pond? Wow, so many memories, some more in a bit, I ha
  21. I assume that you've covered up those knees and picked that book up of the floor Ashley, I haven't a clue, I assume it was in either 1888 or 1927.
  22. Ashley, I think you are right, it was Billy Bacons field, still think we used to call it Billy Boggs, probably because we always got mudded up! Yes we were armed with jam jars and fishing nets after minnows and if you were lucky a red breast, also caught tadpoles, frogs and newts and once caught a crafish. Remember when the Wakes were held there and also at the Shoulder of Mutton pub just down the road, it was a lot cheaper than the Goose Fair. Regards, Brian.
  23. I take it you are a blue badge holder Ashley, 'cause I think that needs emphasizing before the verbals start!!!
  24. I know how you feel Ashley, now i'm 14 stone and going bald these boy band auditions aren't as much fun. I'll carry on with the day job.
  25. Ashley - have you been watching "Monty Python" re-runs again?
