Mine is made by Kundo, a west German company. I don’t think these were very expensive. It’s not very well finished, bit rough on the plates but it’s quite attractive and I like the visual action and it works well. I think I picked mine up for about £10-15, no more. It was complete and working so I just cleaned it. I saw one with a broken torsion spring in a charity shop somewhere recently. I did have one of the modern battery quartz versions for years and when I saw this thought I’d get a ‘proper one’. The battery one kept better time. I’m no expert on these so can offer little advice other

First Cuckoo of the season heard this morning 06.30 hrs, he's about a week early to when we usually hear him, (wonder if he came over on a small boat), first job this morning is to pump off the unleaded petrol from the bottle of E10 and water then take the R10 for a walk down the farmyard for an hour, after that I'll play it by ear as to what to do then Rog

The soundtrack of my youth grows ever quieter with the death of Harry Belafonte, singer, consummate actor, and a giant of equal/human rights. Of course most famous for The Banana Boat Song and his album Calypso was the first in the USA to sell a million copies. I can't listen to the Banana Boat Song without thinking of this Morecambe and Wise sketch with Nina of Nina and Fredrick fame.

One of my earliest memories of hearing anything on the radio with the Light Programme. I was always fascinated by Banana Boat Song because I could never understand what he was saying or singing about.

One of my dear late dad's party pieces was for him to sing the introduction to Day-O (The Banana Boat Song) much to the amusement of my cousins. RIP Harry

I once had a boat with a a Perkins 4.108 diesel. I was taking it up to Newark Marina from Farndon on a cold March day to sell it. The engine cut out just by Kelham weir. I had forgotten to turn on the fuel tap! You can’t start an old diesel under those circumstances without bleeding the fuel system. Fortunately I had on board with me the chief engineer (later to become the MD) of Nottingham City Transport who quickly bled the system and got the engine running before we went over the weir. Another lucky escape for me!

Help please! I hope I am not imagining this. I was born in 1951, I lived on Independent Street and went to Douglas Road school. I remember walking home and cutting through what must have been Radford mill. I walked up Garden Street then went left into a factory area. I walked through and came out on Norton Street. Now here’s where I am struggling, I vividly remember seeing small boats floating in a small pool on the right hand side as I walked through. Was there some sort of boat repairer there? My brother who is 3 years older than me thinks I am making it up, I can’t find anything about it so

My friend Eileen and I used to get over to Nottingham as often as we could in the late 60's, we lived in Derby and it wasn't as exciting. We used to regularly visit the Ad Lib Club, the Union, the Boat Club and the Beachcomber. Anyone remember Paul Chapman, he was a real flirt! I found an old diary from 1968 and according to that Bruce Channel was on at the Union. Other places mentioned in my diary were the Salutation and the Belvedere but I can't remember where they were. In Derby Clouds was the popular nightclub at the time.

I have a boat on a trailer parked next to the garage!

In a few decades, it will be more important to have a boat rather than a car! I won’t be here to see it but the sea will eventually have its way… and the fens will revert to (very wet) marshland. The powers that be will obviously try to protect the fertile agricultural land though

Beekay, maybe buses, trains and bicycles are not everyone’s cup of tea but you guys like them which is great. I’m now into gardening although Mrs B doesn’t mean I’m Mrs Blossom but also that’s not everyone’s cup of tea and can be a chore for some people. Whatever rocks your boat is fine big bro. I think as well that people move on and have other commitments in life.

I think I recognise Nether Lock cottage from my boat trips from Newark marina down to Cromwell lock many years ago.

The full story of the canal boat is here: National DA2 Engine (nationalengine.blogspot.com)

It could be, I tried asking the boat owner but he couldn't hear me over the engine noise, could have been an old Lister, I have a single cylinder Lister diesel rated at 10.5 hp that would do nicely in a small narrow boat Rog

I've spent many wonderful holidays on the west coast sailing round the Inner Hebrides. It's a long way to tow a boat and I'm not sure I would want to do it now but I've got many happy memories of the area.

I have mixed memories of canals, my brother lived on a narrow boat which was moored at Etruria which he loved. Ex car mechanic so loved the mechanics. I actually fell in the canal off a small boat in Loughborough about 5 years ago, went right under and had to be hauled out by a passing dog walker. My mobile phone was fizzing in my pocket so had to dismantle it and get a new one. Someone from a moored boat provided me with dry clothes to get back home which was very kind. Very lucky that I didn’t come into contact with something like a shopping trolley or anything else that might have been lurk

We did go on a short narrow boat trip somewhere to the rear of Belvoir castle many years ago. I knew the chap who owned Tadley Electricals on Haydn Rd. in Sherwood and he was was an avid Grantham Canal activist and I noticed a man in Lidl Bingham yesterday with a ‘Grantham Canal Preservation Society’ badge on his jacket so I guess the society is still running.

Sadly, we don't have any canals here in OZ but we do have the mighty River Murray. It is in serious flood right now and all water activities have ceased. We often go for houseboat holidays on the river with a group of friends. Very civilised it is too. This boat has three large bedrooms each with en-suites and a bar and spa on the upper deck. We have used it twice.

Cruising on the canals can be such a calm leisurely experience and I’d quite fancy having a week on the local canals. I took the kids on proper organised school holiday day trips on the Grand Union Canal when we lived down that way but the best canal trip we’ve done is on the Canal du Midi in Southern France. It was a brilliant and beautiful trip but quite tiring as there are so many locks along the stretch we travelled. We rented an 8 berth boat (for 6 of us plus our dog, because we didn’t want to be too cramped) also rented a couple of bikes so we could get even more exercise along the wa

Alas, I too have called a halt to narrowboating. I know there are people older than I who still cruise, but the thing is, 'er indoors started complaining about the harness digging into her shoulders. We really ought've got a boat with an engine.

I’ve always had a fascination for canals but my only practical experience was a long weekend on the North Oxford about 25 years ago. A friend, who is approaching retirement, has a new build narrow boat under construction and I follow progress with interest. At my age I’ve decided that my boating days are over but I’ve had a lot of interesting experiences sailing in the Falmouth Bay Area and around the wild waters of the Hebrides. I take pleasure in doing scary things but it’s time I stopped!

Worth a look mate, I saw a model of some lock gates when I was looking for the narrow boat, I do like your model though,it's a cracking job especially the hand sewn canvas sheet and painting Rog

nothing to do with "league" mate, if you enjoy what you do thats great, I'm sure if you did a search in the internet you would be able to find instructions for your model, I have seen quite a few narrow boat models and they look really good going through the water, would be a good project for you mate Rog

This was moored in the Wharfe last time I walked along the Chesterfield canal in Retford I took a photo of this narrow boat because of the little phrase wrote on the side And to save anyone trying to expand the picture to read the phrase I took a close up of it,I thought it was an interesting few words Rog
