  3. Can anyone tell me was there a Piggins or Pippins Yard Radford in 1891 and if so where it was. I have the Yardley family from my past that lived there according to the 1891 Census.
  4. Hi, just seen your maps page and have been looking for ages to find a map showing Wright street off Bluebell hill and Chapel street off Ilkeston road, could you please advise me of where I could get a copy. I lived at these addresses while awaiting my father’s return from the far east in 1946 and would dearly love to show my family where this was. Best regards A.G.Smith(cimerron)
  5. Exactly..when I first joined, comfortable musically...great to take virtual braincell tour! Must confess gave me a headache Different approach..beer Goggle's, only know this area though a mate who went to the same London school as me. he went to Nottingham University.. My Grandparents Nottingham through & through... Back to topic.. fleeting memories, out of the plainsman, first right down a hill, on the left a small entrance to a park... A substantial building on the left!!!! council???? (Third time) the fenced off area I initially thought electri
  6. Help please! I hope I am not imagining this. I was born in 1951, I lived on Independent Street and went to Douglas Road school. I remember walking home and cutting through what must have been Radford mill. I walked up Garden Street then went left into a factory area. I walked through and came out on Norton Street. Now here’s where I am struggling, I vividly remember seeing small boats floating in a small pool on the right hand side as I walked through. Was there some sort of boat repairer there? My brother who is 3 years older than me thinks I am making it up, I can’t find anything about it so
  7. I'm digging into early football in Nottingham. Notts Olympic were a Radford based club, active from 1884 to 1892, then reformed to play again until 1914. Their ground throughout was Churchville Ground, Churchfield Lane, which opened in 1884, in use until 1915, somewhere near St Peter’s Church,Radford. I have been unable to identify exactly where this ground was. The Nottm Journal of 20.8.1884 says “at Friesland” but the ground was generally known as Churchville. The possibilities, running up from the south are as follows. Close to St Peter’ Church, in what is now part of the graveyard. I pace

  10. Hi Cliff, while your on this subject, see if you can turn up a map of Denton street, off Denman street. I can't locate any info at all. (Radford). Had look round that area when last in Nottingham but its altered beyond all recognition. Cheers, Beekay.
  11. Whilst I have been perusing picture the past, I came upon a picture of Douglas school, Harvest festival, 1957. Among the toddlers on there I could swear I saw my youngest brother John. He is sitting on the bottom row. WHAT A SUPRISE !! Also there was a written article by a Val Jayacoddy who talked about Christ church garden, that used to be on Ronald street. She mentioned about playing in the unkempt side of the grounds and finding some money in the old wall. That really was a shock as I was the miscreant who knocked the brick out and found the dosh. In the rush of kids, I got the princely sum

The cottages you refer to Vine Street, Gate  Street & Leivers Street were built in 1874 to house miners at Wollaton Colliery.
Both my mothers parents were born on Gate Street in 1887,
      My Grandfather Walter Clifton
             Grandmother Elizabeth Radford
Grandfather worked at Wollaton colliery all his working life

  13. Does anyone know of a iris smith lived 3 Clayton square Mitchell Street Radford Nottingham had kids in the 1950s but sadly adopted them . She had no occupation.
  14. Just going through family tree and came across the site and pictures. My grandfather emigrated alone to Australia around 1915, a coal miner born in Mansfield. I have family letters and postcards from his mother in Clapham road Radford, a sister in Aspley Gardens and photos before 1932. I have a lot of family tree, but nothing of younger generations, or stories of his folk back home. Any stories, memories, links would be greatly appreciated.
  15. Hi from Oz my old stomping grounds as a kid were Radford and Lenton Recs, the Castle and Wollaton Park. I was born on Lawrence St Radford no longer in existence.

Not sure how I have managed to get two reply boxes on the go. Has anyone got the answer?

  16. I've just read the book 'Radford' by Chris Richards and feel sure I'm in the Forster Street school photo taken in 1957 ( on the page facing the contents page if anyone has the book ) my sister says it isn't me but I think I recognise other kids in the picture. I'd appreciate anyone reading this to check and see if they are in the picture. I was born on Croydon Road in 1952 and lived there until getting married in 1973. Great memories of Radford in the hard days. Nine of us lived in a mid terraced house on Croydon Road, two beds and an attic, outside toilet and a yard where the tin bath an
  17. Hello all, I have scribbled down the mostly happy story of my childhood growing up in and around Radford Bridge Road on Gate Street. It is now published on amazon.co.uk and is called "What time is it on the moon?" i would love to hear from anyone who remembers things the way I do. oldrec
  18. Having come from a quiet market town I found Nottingham quite.. um... different! I shared a terraced house on Gamble St with a Hungarian refugee whose chief talent lay in attracting a succession of beautiful women, and an ex- Belgian Congo mercenary whom we were forbidden to wake up suddenly on the basis that if we did; we would be killed- Mike was normal in every other respect, being a Sales Rep for Birds Eye. Frank, our intrepid Hungarian who wished to remain childless, would buy natural products to this end- i.e. items made from lambs intestines which were actually very expensive, which he
  19. These 3 roads of terraced houses run between Churchfield Lane through to Radford Bolevard. I beleive they were built around 1900-1910. Can anyone help dating them please. Thanks
  20. My mother was adopted, so I have very little information about her at all. I have plenty on my father's side but very little about my mother. There is a family tragedy connected to this adoption. By pure chance this weekend I saw my mother's birth certificate for about 30 seconds. I could not see much of it and could not really read the handwriting. This was my mother's birthplace. What I could see was something like " 16 Fairfield Street" This was in Nottingham, as the registry office was in Nottingham. I am a little vague about the address. It was possibly Fairford Street or something li
  21. Hi forum. Desperately seeking. I was not born in Radford but remember visiting grandparents on Garfield road I think it was no 3. And I have just discovered that my biological grandma lived at 12 Leonard terrace at the same time.I am searching for a man called james Johnstone who was lodgeing at Leonard terrace in 1967 I believe he was from Coventry and was probably came here for work. He was 24 years old at the time .Does anyone remember him? My grandmas name was iris esswood at the time and I've been told was living with a Margaret pegg.also with 2 daughters Lynn and sue. Does any one re
  22. Friesland, Old Radford, is mentioned in a newspaper article of 1840. Have managed to establish that Radford Grove Lane, which still exists, was in Friesland. Prospect Place was also classed as being in Friesland. Any idea of the exact area of Friesland, please? Going away in a couple of hours for a few days, so if any replies, don't think I'm ignoring you! Thanks
  23. Can anyone remind me of the name of the butcher we used to go to on Hartley Road Radford in the late 1960s ?
  24. I am having a little bit of banter on another site regarding the exact location of the fire which caused such damage to the old John Player factory. Basically there is a little contretemps as I think the factory is in Radford but another thinks it is in Hyson Green. I am appealing to the greater minds of Nottingham to clarify and the experts on maps such as Cliff Ton (whose skills at producing maps of any era, almost instantly, I greatly admire)
  25. Looking for a copy of a map that has sufficient detail to identify or determine house numbers on Bailey Street. Also looking for the same for Radford Road, narrowing this down to number 496 or just up Egypt Road / Radford Road Junction. Hope some one can help, looking forward to any replys. PR
